Objective To evaluate the long-term outcomes and quality of life after surgery in children and adolescents with temporal lobe epilepsy.Methods Clinical data of 31 children and adolescents with temporal lobe epilepsy were analyzed retrospectively.Surgery was performed in all the patients,including the standard anterior temporal lobectomy in 26,extended anterior temporal lobectomy in 2,standard anterior temporal lobectomy plus malacic focus resection in 2 and resection of posteriotemporal and subparietal epileptogenic focus in 1.The improvements of epileptic seizure,cognition and life quality were evaluated after surgery.Results During a follow-up period of more than 5 years,the patients achieved seizure-free and Engel class I outcome in 26,Engel Ⅱ in 1,Engel Ⅲ in 2,Engel Ⅳ in 2.The postoperative pathological examination showed as follows: hippocampal sclerosis in 13 patients,cortical dysplasia and gliosis in 9,cortical dysplasia and hippocampal sclerosis in 6,glioneuronal tumor in 2 and secondary scar gyrus formation in 1.Most postoperative complications were cured.Conclusion The long-term outcome is good and the quality-of-life could be improved after surgery for temporal lobe epilepsy in children and adolescents.
