Hypoxia disrupts oral homeostasis through multiple interconnected pathways, including interference with tooth germ development, impairment of salivary gland function and salivary buffering capacity, compromise of the oral mucosal barrier, imbalance in jawbone and alveo-lar bone remodeling, and alterations in the diversity and functionality of the oral microbiome. These disturbances collectively contribute to the onset and progression of oral diseases. Moreover, disruption of oral homeostasis may,in turn, affect systemic homeostasis, increasing the risk of disorders in other organ systems through mecha-nisms involving inflammatory mediator release and microbial translocation. Here,we systematically review the effects and underlying mechanisms of hypoxia exposure on oral homeostasis, and further explore the interconnections between hypoxia-induced oral dysregulation and systemic homeostatic imbalance. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory networks linking oral and systemic homeostasis under hypoxia, thereby offering potential insights for maintaining homeostatic balance.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that causes skeletal muscle weakness and atrophy, resulting in respiratory failure and a short lifespan. Considering the lack of effective treatment, this study investigated the effects of human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) on the clinical symptoms and potential mechanisms in a mouse model of ALS superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1-G93A). Neurological assessments, including neurological scoring, rotarod testing, and 7-T magnetic resonance imaging, were conducted to evaluate neurological impairments. Survival rates and body weight of the mice were also recorded. Immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry analyses were performed to investigate the number of neurons and infiltrated inflammatory cells in the spinal cord as well as the central nervous system. The results indicate that infusion of hDPSCs increased the body weight, mitigated motor neuron dysfunction, and extended the lifespan of SOD1-G93A mice by approximately 15 days. Moreover, hDPSCs infusion reduced the degree of spinal cord atrophy. Results suggested that the number of neurons in the central nervous system of SOD1-G93A mice was significantly decreased, but hDPSCs infusion resulted in an increase in these numbers. However, hDPSCs infusion had no obvious effect on microglia phenotypes in SOD1-G93A mice. This study emphasizes the potential of hDPSCs to mitigate neuronal loss in an ALS mouse model, suggesting a promising therapeutic avenue for ALS.
Background Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a precancerous lesion characterized by fibrous tissue deposition, the incidence of which correlates positively with the frequency of betel nut chewing. Prolonged betel nut chewing can damage the integrity of the oral mucosal epithelium, leading to chronic inflammation and local immunological derangement. However, currently, the underlying cellular events driving fibrogenesis and dysfunction are incompletely understood, such that OSF has few treatment options with limited therapeutic effectiveness. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) have been recognized for their anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrosis capabilities, making them promising candidates to treat a range of immune, inflammatory, and fibrotic diseases. However, the application of DPSCs in OSF is inconclusive. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the pathogenic mechanism of OSF and, based on this, to explore new treatment options. Methods A human cell atlas of oral mucosal tissues was compiled using single-cell RNA sequencing to delve into the underlying mechanisms. Epithelial cells were reclustered to observe the heterogeneity of OSF epithelial cells and their communication with immune cells. The results were validated in vitro, in clinicopathological sections, and in animal models. In vivo, the therapeutic effect and mechanism of DPSCs were characterized by histological staining, immunohistochemical staining, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Results A unique epithelial cell population, Epi1.2, with proinflammatory and profibrotic functions, was predominantly found in OSF. Epi1.2 cells also induced the fibrotic process in fibroblasts by interacting with T cells through receptor-ligand crosstalk between macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF)-CD74 and C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4). Furthermore, we developed OSF animal models and simulated the clinical local injection process in the rat buccal mucosa using DPSCs to assess their therapeutic impact and mechanism. In the OSF rat model, DPSCs demonstrated superior therapeutic effects compared with the positive control (glucocorticoids), including reducing collagen deposition and promoting blood vessel regeneration. DPSCs mediated immune homeostasis primarily by regulating the numbers of KRT19 + MIF + epithelial cells and via epithelial-stromal crosstalk. Conclusions Given the current ambiguity surrounding the cause of OSF and the limited treatment options available, our study reveals that epithelial cells and their crosstalk with T cells play an important role in the mechanism of OSF and suggests the therapeutic promise of DPSCs.

Background: The biochemical and genetic characteristics of four very-long-chain acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD) patients, clarifying their pathogenic genetic factors and evaluating the application value of genetic diagnosis in the early diagnosis of VLCADD, are reported and discussed in this article. Methods: Patients underwent blood tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), urine gas chromatography (GC/MS), and high-throughput sequencing technology. New variants were analyzed for pathogenicity using bioinformatics software. Swiss-PdbViewer software was used to predict the effect of variants on the structure of the very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD) protein.Result: A total of four VLCADD patients were diagnosed. They revealed elevated levels of C14, C14:1, C14:2, C14:1/C2, C14:1/C10, and C14:1/C12:1. Two patients were early-onset neonatal cases and died during infancy and the neonatal period, respectively. Seven kinds of variants were detected, including four novel variants. Bioinformatics software revealed that the variants were harmful, and the Swiss-PdbViewer results suggest that variation affects protein conformation. Conclusion: This study identified four novel ACADVL gene variants. These findings contribute to the understanding of the genetic basis and pathogenesis of VLCADD. Meanwhile, the study enriches the genetic mutation spectrum and the correlation between genotypes and phenotypes of VLCADD, indicating that genetic diagnosis plays an essential role in the early diagnosis and treatment of VLCADD.
Nitrate found widely distributed in vegetables and fruits. It has been proved to have many physiological functions through nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway, such as attenuate oxidative stress, enhance the skeletal muscle and tone skin vascular. But the function of nitrate in regulating hair growth is unclear. Here, we evaluated potential roles of nitrate on hair growth and its mechanisms by in vivo models. Mice treated with 10mM nitrate supplementation significantly promoting hair growth, along with an increase in the number of hair follicles and thickness of dermis. We further demonstrated that Wnt3a and β-catenin were highly expressed in the nitrate-treated groups, while the expression of TGF-β was attenuated. Moreover, nitrate also increased the expression levels of growth factors (Fgf, Igf-1, and Vegf). Our data indicated that nitrate supplementation could effectively accelerate hair regrowth through activating the Wnt/β-catenin and inhibiting TGF-β1/Smad/BMP signaling pathway. Therefore, these findings provide support for a potential therapeutic role of nitrate in preventing and treating alopecia. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.
Chinese Journalof Stomatology has issued eighty papers on Chinese stomatology history in seventy years. According to three stages of the journal, statistics of the quantity and themes of the issued papers are compiled: the number of issued papers increased while the theme shifted from Chinese stomatology history before 1912 to Chinese contemporary stomatology history. Research methods shifted from the comparatively scanty summary or induction on literature and cultural relics materials to multidisciplinary approaches. Early researches testified the achievments of senior scholars such as Zhou Dacheng and Mao Xiejun in the field while research teams represented by colleges and research institutions have published varied research topics in recent years. As the research deepens, platforms for issuing stomatology papers have been expanded and more subjects have been cross-disciplined. Varieties of academic monographs on stomatology history and stomatology education history have been published, among which Zhou Dacheng's Historic textual research of Chinese stomatology can be regarded as a milestone in the field. Comparing with other fields of stomatology, current research on stomatology history still has much more gaps to fill. The academic community should put more emphasis on talent training, discipline construction, research approaches, museum construction, as well as the cooperation between Chinese and western medical sciences so that to assist in the long-term development of the research.

Homeostasis is a dynamic balance process of self-regulating. Biological systems remain stable through adapting to changing external conditions to maintain normal life activities. Homeostatic medicine is the science of studying homeostasis of human molecules, cells, organs and the whole body. It is a comprehensive discipline based on maintaining homeostasis to keep human health and assist for diseases prevention and diagnoses. Homeostatic medicine focuses on the whole body and on the role of homeostasis in health and disease, which is expected to provide new ideas and strategies for maintaining health as well as diagnosing and treating diseases. Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in the control of multisystem homeostasis. Nitrate is an important substance in regulating NO homeostasis through the nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway. Sialin, nitrate transporter which is located in the cell membrane and cytoplasm, mediates multiple cellular biological functions. The nitrate-nitrite-NO pathway and sialin-mediated biological functions play an important role in the regulation of body homeostasis.
Chinese medicine entered a significant period from foundation to maturity between Han and Tang dynasties when the Chinese traditional stomatology was a key stage. Sorting and analysis of existing literature and research outcomes have showed that current research on stomatology between Han and Tang dynasties focuses on oral physiology, pathology, diagnosis and treatment, and health care. It also involves stomatology history and explanation of termino-logies related to mouth and teeth recorded in medical books, use of simple methods, and thinking with citation and analysis of literature simply listed and reasoning preliminarily deducted. From the macro perspective, current research has not unveiled the whole picture of stomatology between the two dynasties and left a series of key issues unresolved. Thus, new methods should be developed and employed to carry out medical research on stomatology between Han and Tang dynasties given that is has a prosperous future.
The remained documents and archives show that the history of diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases in royal court of the Qing Dynasty was over 200 years. The departmental system of medical care in the Qing Royal Court was inherited from former Ming Dynasty. Although the departments in the system changed over reigns, the Department of Dentistry exist all the time. In a set of historical records of 38 medical cases opened to the public, the documented symptoms and diseases, in the sense of modern medical science, included periodontitis, oral mucosal diseases, dental caries, parotiditis, etc., and the patients involved various ranks in the court, showing that oral diseases were common in the Qing Royal Court. The royal doctors ranked variedly and the medication they used was diverse. Medical fuming or steaming and medical heating were some distinctive methods among the treatments. In 1600s, the western modern medical science started to be introduced into China. In the reign of Kangxi Emperor (1700s), many western doctors were employed by the royal court and they engaged in the treatment of oral diseases. The late Qing Dynasty appeared the second peak that western doctors came into China. In 1898, Dr. Jingrong Chen, a dentist who possessed knowledge of modern dentistry in Beijing city, set up a dental clinic in the royal court and gave treatment to patients in the royal members and high-ranking officials.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare, potentially fatal disease characterized by atherosclerosis and overt calcification of the aorta, leading to severe luminal stenosis of the vessel (1). Here, we report a case of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) concurrent with CRA. By studying clinical cases, we hope to gain more understanding of aortic calcification (AC) in RA.
Although teeth with pulpitis/apical periodontitis are saved after successful endodontic therapy, they are devitalized and susceptible to reinfections and fractures. The development of biology-based approaches for dental pulp regeneration or repair is possible today because of recent advances in tissue engineering and biomaterials. Cell-free regenerative endodontic therapy offers a promising strategy for the treatment of necrotic immature permanent teeth in children and adolescents. However, studies are underway to determine whether this procedure can be applied to mature teeth.
