The paper analyzed the genetic diversity of Daemonorops margaritae(Hance) Beccari using RAPD,based on four natural populations.A total of 154 sites were detected by 15 primers, which the proportion of polymorphic loci was 75.97%.The Nei's index and Shannon information index were 0.258 4 and 0.388 8,and total genetic diversity was(0.257 8).Genetic diversity of D.margaritae mainly distributed within population, which the coefficient of gene differentiation was 0.141 2.Genetic identity between Maoganxiang and Jianfengling population was the highest while that between Diaoluoshan and Bawangling population was the lowest. The results of AMOVA indicated that most of the variation(97.38%) resided within population. It was concluded from present study that there existed high genetic diversity of D.margaritae genetic resources, especially in Jianfengling population, which should be the priority population to be protected.
There are records of successful introductions of Daemonorops jenkinsiana and Calamus dioicus into China; however, there have not been any reports on the plantations of these two rattan species to date. Investigations were conducted in three-year-old plantations of D. jenkinsiana and C. dioicus in Jiedong County, Guangdong Province with sample areas of 10 square meters. The results show that survival rates of both D. jenkinsiana and C. dioicus are beyond 85%, with 4400 and 8467 stems per hectare respectively; that their lengths are 6 567 and 8 600 meters per hectare respectively, with bio-mass being 1 110.8 and 577.3 kg per hectare respectively; and that their values are only 140.1 and 381.6 Yuan per hectare, however. Based on the data above and records before, it can be concluded that it is feasible to afforest plantations of D. jenkinsiana and C. dioicus southward from Jieyang, Guangdong Province. It is unnecessary to evaluate now the value of these plantations because they are still young but it is necessary to grow them as supplement plants to increase income.
This paper dealed with the differences between albino and normal seedlings of Calamus nambarensis var.xishuangbanensis in terms of growth and photosynthesis.Thirteen families among 22 families were found to have one to three albinos, the percent of which varying from 0.4 to 2.2 percents, while the percent of albinos among all 22 families was about 0.7 percent. The number of albino leaves and the length of longest leaves were 1.9±0.3 and 22.32±3.49 cm respectively, which were less than that of 2.0±0.0 and 26.09±3.26 cm of normal seedlings, accounting for 95% and 85% of normal seedlings. The albinos hadn't chlorophyll a,but some chlorophyll b.The total content of chlorophyll was 0.02 mg·g~(-1)FW, much less than that of 8.15 mg·g~(-1)FW of normal seedlings, accounting for 0.2 percent.Whether photosynthesis active radiation(PAR) was 800 μmol·m~(-2)·s~(-1) or (1 600) μmol·m~(-2)·s~(-1),the photosynthetic rate of albinos was less than that of normal seedlings, accounting for about 20 percents. The data of net photosynthetic rate of albino evaluatde by the authors were also analyzed
Flowering behaviour and the time of pollen collection and the conditions of germination in Calamus tetradactylus were fathomed in this paper. The results showed that the species is in full blossom from 4:00a.m. to 8:00a.m. in the morning, with the highest percentage of the buds which flower at 6:00a.m. in a day up to 62.36%.The optimum time of collection was from 8:30a.m. to 11:30a.m. because germination rate was the highest and the length of pollen tube the longest during this period. The best pollen germination and growth occur in liquid medium with 25% sucrose, plus (35 ℃) for 6 h.
Incorporating C-3 plants with C-4 photosynthesis traits by genetic engineering are available for improving plant productivity. Although rattans are a special and big group of plants including 13 genera and ca. 600 species in the world and have been studied since the mid-nineteenth century, the knowledge of its photosynthetic pathway is still lacking. Therefore, it is meaningful to determine the photosynthetic pathway of rattans. It was reported that chlorophyll a/b value, ratio of stomata occurrence on upper to lower epidermis, activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and pyruvate phosphate dikinase (PPDK), and stable carbon isotope ratio in leaves Of C-3 plants were lower than those Of C-4 plants, thus this study tested them with seedlings and adult plants of the following three rattan species, Daemonorops margaritae (Hance) Becc., Calamus simplicifolius C. F. Wei and C. tetradactylus Hance occurring in South China. The results showed that values of these indices were rather low, falling into the ranges of other C-3 plants, so it was concluded that the three rattan species were C-3 plants.
