This study examined parents’ and grandparents’ perspectives on intergenerational interactions within an innovative school–family partnership in early childhood education (ECE). Drawing on sociocultural concepts of learning and a ‘more-than-parents’ approach to intergenerational learning (IGL), this research project adopted a two-way partnership perspective, encouraging children and their family members to explore and reconstruct local cultural heritage sites together by utilising their lived experiences and cultural resources. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data derived from an online open-ended questionnaire completed by 20 adult participants (i.e., 14 parents and six grandparents). Inductive thematic analysis revealed five core themes: (a) acknowledging children as capable agents; (b) identifying children’s learning; (c) adults as learners; (d) shared activities as a space for fostering family connection; and (e) challenges and suggestions for future implementation. The findings demonstrate that the shared exploration of cultural heritage can enhance mutual learning and foster vivid intergenerational communication, thereby strengthening family relationships. By observing the active role of young learners in intergenerational activities, participants acknowledged capabilities that they had previously overlooked in their children and/or grandchildren. However, challenges relating to time constraints, available resources and practical issues suggest that schools need to provide families with tailored information about such initiatives. Overall, this study emphasises the pivotal role of early childhood education in fostering IGL through reciprocal school–family partnerships.
Background: Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain (RCRSP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal issue, encompassing various shoulder conditions. While exercise typically forms the foundation of conservative treatment, there exists ongoing discourse regarding the effectiveness and role of passive treatments. International guidelines recommend initial conservative management, with surgery considered only after failed conservative treatment. However, recent studies reveal discrepancies between recommended practices and actual clinical management. The aim of the study was to assess current practices in managing RCRSP among Greek physiotherapists, with a focus on understanding the alignment of these practices with international guidelines for conservative treatment. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among Greek physiotherapists to assess current practices in managing RCRSP. The survey, adapted from previous studies, collected demographic data and assessed clinical reasoning through a vignette-based approach. Responses were analyzed for alignment with guideline-recommended care. Results: Out of over 9000 contacted physiotherapists, 163 responded. A majority expressed a specific interest in shoulder pain (85%). Patient education (100%) and exercise (100%) were widely endorsed, with limited support for imaging (44%), injection (40%), and surgery (26%). Younger respondents were less inclined towards surgical referral (p = 0.001). Additionally, adjunctive interventions like mobilization (66%) and massage therapy (58%) were commonly employed alongside exercise and education. Treatment duration typically ranged from 6 to 8 weeks, with exercises reviewed weekly. Conclusions: The study highlights a consistent preference for conservative management among Greek physiotherapists, aligning with international guidelines. However, there are variations in practice, particularly regarding adjunctive interventions and exercise prescription parameters. Notably, there is a disparity between recommended and actual use of certain modalities.
Background: Shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal issue in primary care, affecting up to 50% of patients six months post-consultation, leading to significant functional impairments and societal costs, especially due to sick leave. Shoulder injuries are particularly prevalent among ‘overhead athletes’ in sports like swimming, volleyball, and handball, with high injury rates reported annually. Screening tools like the Arm Care Screen (ACS) have been used to effectively identify athletes at risk of shoulder injuries. However, their applicability to the general population is less understood. This study aimed to assess the discriminant validity of a modified ACS (MACS) in detecting musculoskeletal risk factors among non-athletes. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted with 30 asymptomatic subjects over 18, excluding those with a history of shoulder injuries or surgeries. The MACS, comprising four tests, was administered, and its diagnostic performance was evaluated through sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and likelihood ratios. Results: The results indicated low sensitivity (0–47.62%) and variable specificity (55.56–100%), suggesting that the MACS may not effectively identify risk factors in the general population. Positive and negative predictive values were inconsistent (ranging from 0 to 100), as well as positive and negative likelihood ratios (ranging from 0 to 3.47), highlighting the need for non-athlete-specific screening tools. Conclusion: While the MACS shows promise in athletes, its application in the general population requires further refinement. This study underscores the necessity for tailored screening methods to enhance the early detection and prevention of musculoskeletal issues in diverse populations.
As the importance of developing good thinkers from an early age is widely recognised as an overarching goal of contemporary early childhood curricula, research on nurturing children’s thinking continues to grow. This study sought to gain insight into kindergarten children’s understanding of the concept and process of thinking. A socio-cultural perspective that conceptualises thinking and its development as a dynamic, socially mediated process, in which signs, including drawing, guided the research. 35 children from Greece, aged 4–6 years, participated in the study and were involved in a drawing-telling activity. Thematic analysis, which included both the drawings and verbal responses of the participants, resulted in five main themes that reveal new aspects of children’s perceptions and reflect the inherent complexity of the concept of thinking. Although the findings have direct implications for teaching and learning in early childhood classrooms, the discussion calls for further research in this area.
Adopting a sociocultural standpoint, the present study investigated Greek early years professionals’ experience of the compulsive distance learning that took place in Greece due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, we explored: a. the pedagogical priorities, challenges, and opportunities teachers recognised, b. their understanding of children’s participation and interaction in digital classrooms, and c. the role they attributed to the family context in which online education took place. Using a qualitative research perspective, we conducted 40 semi-structured interviews that were thematically analysed. Data analysis revealed that although teachers strived to make distance learning possible and joyful, they seem uncertain of how to create a meaningful, interactive, and play-based environment in their virtual classrooms. Our findings provide constructive insights into ECE teachers’ experience, allowing us to discuss the arising opportunities of reconsidering participatory learning in conjunction with key interactions among teachers, children, and parents in a post-COVID world.
Peer interactions and play have been highlighted as key factors for immigrant children’s smooth transition and participation in a new language and cultural context. Taking a sociocultural stance towards children’s participation in early childhood education (ECE) and considering that their communication acts are always multimodal, in this study, we sought to examine peer interactions during play in a Greek multicultural kindergarten with high concentrations of immigrant and refugee students. Data derived from systematic observation of free play activities, semi-structured interviews, and a drawing-telling activity aimed to figure out all children’s ways of acting and communicating. Findings provide further evidence on how material and embodied signs function as means that mediate play and contribute to sustained interactions between children with different linguistic backgrounds, while they reveal the potential of drawing to function as communicational means in multilingual settings.
Children's everyday mathematics has been well evidenced by a growing body of research and is widely acknowledged as fundamental to meaningful learning in early childhood education. However, literature supports that drawing upon children's mathematical resources for further learning requires that the range of these resources is valued and noticed at school. Considering that up to now little is known about the way children express their mathematical ideas during naturally occurring activities within classrooms, this study sought to enhance our understanding of this issue. Informed by previous research on the emergence of early mathematics during play and based on the funds of knowledge framework, we investigated the content, the processes and the origin of children's mathematical knowledge in a kindergarten classroom, with the aim to understand through a sociocultural lens where and how this knowledge is situated and how this information is revealed during play activities. Evidence foregrounds the importance of examining all the different facets of children's everyday mathematics for creating responsive curricula and confirms the critical role of play for investigating this type of cultural knowledge within schools.
The present study investigates the features of teacher-children interaction during whole-class activities within an early childhood community, in which children’s active participation is supported. The theoretical basis of the study is shaped by sociocultural approaches, which consider learning as a process of social co-construction of meanings, accomplished through children’s participation in meaningful and authentic interactions where their agency is deliberately fostered by adults. By implementing a three-level framework of analysis, two whole-class activities were analyzed. The research findings identified how the control of the activities was shared between the teacher and the children, how the children’s engagement was accomplished and what features it had as well as how their bodily movements contributed to the realization of meaning, sharing of thinking and extension of interaction. New insights on whole-class interaction are provided, which broaden our knowledge in the field of participatory pedagogy, while implications for future research are highlighted.
By taking a cultural-historical perspective, the present case study put participatory pedagogies into practice for early mathematical learning and sought to delve into children’s emerging mathematising and the teacher’s role who attentively follows children’s initiatives. Drawing on a series of selected critical incidents that evolved as the children of a kindergarten classroom engaged with the investigation of linear measuring tools, we analysed both children’s mathematising processes and teacher’s responsive and mediational acts aiming to promote young learners’ mathematical thinking. With respect to children, the analysis demonstrated how through a series of ongoing mathematising processes, they elaborated and gradually developed key measurement concepts. Regarding the teacher's role, it was found that children’s emerging mathematising was supported by five lines of action enacted by her: (a) documenting thoroughly children’s actions, (b) posing challenging or clarifying questions, (c) introducing activities to the plenary as a response to children’s actions, (d) motivating children to ask their classmates for help, and (e) creating connections between children’s funds of knowledge and key mathematical ideas.
