In the process of rapid urbanization in China,there has been a phenomenon that rural population decline and land expansion exist simultaneously, while such shrinking villages have not been taken seriously in rural planning. On the basis of the existing village classification,it is essential to add a "smart shrinking" village category that is opposite to "aggregating and upgrading" village.Through precise classification and implementation, those shrinking villages can achieve a substantial transformation from passive extensive expansion to active smart shrinkage. Taking Jianshui County, Yunnan Province as an example, this paper proposes the necessity of adding the category of smart shrinking in the village classification,establishes a "smart" development framework for shrinking villages by referring to the "smart growth" principles of cities, and explores planning strategies and design principles for smart shrinking villages, in order to provide new ideas for village classification in the new era and provide references for the "smart" development of rural areas.
