The generalized theory of Nth-order plates is applied to the dispersion of progressive waves in a plane heterogeneous medium with large local gradients of the density and elastic modulus, simulating a structural defect. This approach is based on the spatial reduction of a three-dimensional model of the layer and finite basis functions of the thickness corresponding to semianalytical finite elements. The dispersion problem reduces to a generalized spectral problem for a pair of symmetric matrices. The convergence of the solution in terms of locking frequencies of the wave is considered.
Based on the once coupled phenomenological model of thermoelastic phase transitions, the new linearized intrinsic formulation of the theory of membrane shells with shape memory effect is proposed. The shell model is formulated on the cotangent fibration of a two-dimensional manifold by the tangent strain tensor while the phase state is determined by the scalar field of martensite volume ratio. The linearized evolution equation defines a small increment of the phase state parameter through the increments of the thermodynamical temperature and the tangent force tensor. The incremental constitutive equation for the tangent strain induced by the phase transforms is derived from three-dimensional relation while the constitutive relations for elastic and temperature-induced strains could remain finite. The solutions for cylindrical membrane shells undergoing complete or incomplete direct and inverse phase transforms induced by temperature impacts are shown.
A new variational formulation for the linear hierarchical theory of thick heterogeneous orthotropic shells resulting in the equations resolved for first-order covariant derivatives along one vector field is proposed. The shell theory of Nth order is constructed on the background of the Lagrangian formalism of the analytical mechanics of continua and the dimensional reduction approach combined with the biorthogonal expansion technique. Primo, the three-dimensional model of an elastic shell is referred to a curvilinear frame normally attached to a two-dimensional smooth oriented manifold corresponding to some base surface and represented as Lagrangian system with one field variable, the quasi-translation vector defined on the cotangent fibration of two-dimensional manifold, and the volumetric density of Lagrange’s functional. Secundo, one of the coordinates on the manifold is selected, and the quasi-stress vector on surfaces normal to the base vector corresponding to this coordinate is defined by differentiation of the Lagrangian density on covariant derivative of the quasi-translation. Application of the Legendre transform to the Lagrangian results in the volumeric density of the new mixed functional depending on the quasi-translation, quasi-stress, and time and remaining spatial derivatives of the quasi-translation. Use of the biorthogonal expansions for both quasi-translation and quasi-stress leads hence to the system of field variables of the first kind and generalized forces and consequently to the surface and contour density of the new functional interpreted as generalized Routh functional of a two-dimensional continuum system. Finally, application of the Hamilton principle results in the statement of the initial-boundary value problem for the system of equations resolved for the first-order covariant derivatives of field variables and generalized forces and interpreted as generalized Routh equations for a shell model as continuum-discrete system. The use of the obtained shell theory formulation in problems of normal wave dispersion in heterogeneous elastic waveguides for the analysis of imaginary and complex branches corresponding to evanescent wave modes is shown.
Based on the variational formulation of the theory of N th order of plates as two-dimensional continuum systems, the equations of motion as well as the constitutive equations for a transversally inhomogeneous plate are obtained, resolved with respect to the first derivatives of generalized displacements along one of the spatial coordinates and appropriate generalized forces and written in a form similar to the known Routh equations of classical mechanics. The obtained problem formulation allows one to use both orthogonal polynomials and compact functions corresponding to the semi-analytical finite element method as a basis. The application of the proposed new equations of the N th order plate theory to the problem of normal wave dispersion in an elastic isotropic functionally graded plane layer leads to a linear formulation of the spectral problem with respect to the wave number and, consequently, allows us to construct dispersion branches of propagating and evanescent modes of normal waves.
The review summarizes the advances of Russian and international science in the development and improvement of the properties of carbon–carbon and carbon–ceramic composites, focusing on mechanical, oxidative, and ablative properties. The most in-demand methods at present to modify composite matrices and to apply protective coatings to obtain heterophase compositions based on ultra-high-temperature ceramics are considered. Analysis of the fracture mechanisms of widely used engineering solutions makes it possible to identify promising concepts for the coating architecture. The mathematical formulations of nonlinear heat-transfer problems considering various physicochemical phenomena that occur in structurally heterogeneous materials are presented. The attention is focused on the asymmetry effects, finite speed, and wave nature of the heat propagation within the heat transfer in anisotropic materials. The current methods to assess the stress–strain state of thermally loaded composites and the methods to calculate the effective properties of the composite properties are analyzed.
The thermostability of thin-walled structures is considered by means of a thermoelasticity problem in a three-dimensional quasi-static formulation. Finite-element models of panels in the form of a circular cylinder and a plate reinforced by ribs are constructed. Numerical solutions are obtained for the stability loss of thermoelastic thin-walled reinforced structures with intense edge heating by a mobile heat source.
The thermal processes arising upon the implementation of the additive technologies of selective laser melting and the fusion of metals and alloys are analyzed. An adequate description of the heat transfer upon the implementation of additive technological processes associated with high-intensity local heating by a moving laser beam and the phase transitions generated by a semifinished powder product, crystallization, and the concomitant effects in the growing element is the key to gaining insight into the microstructure and the efficient properties of the obtained material and the prevention of residual deformation (shrinkage) of the item. Currently, the main causes of unpredictable production defects are deviations of the shape of the final item from the preset geometry and high-amplitude residual stresses, which can initiate destruction of the item under loads significantly lower than those calculated, as well as the occurrence of the microscopic defects (pores, layer interfaces, etc.) are. The development of mathematical models that, on the one hand, are sufficiently accurate to predict the listed phenomena and, on the other hand, allow practical implementation in engineering calculations is the basis for the further development of the laser-melting and fusion of metal materials. At the same time, analysis of the current state of the problem shows that development of efficient numerical methods providing acceptable computational costs while maintaining accuracy is the key element in the practical implementation of the models. A method based on multiscale, interconnected modeling of the mechanical and the thermal state of the growing body-at the local level in the melt pool domain, at the intermediate level in the vicinity of the melt pool and the adjacent layers, and at the level of the entire product as a whole-seems to be efficient; here, the computing process at the global level can be based on a combination of the finite-element method (indisputable in practice) and analytical calculations providing local refinement of the solution.
One of topical problems of thick shells theory consists in an accurate modelling of high-frequency shell vibrations and wave propagation, as well as in the application of developed mathematical models to engineering problems of structural dynamics. Many observed processes of both periodic and non-steady shell dynamics cannot be adequately simulated on the groundwork of most traditional hypothesis-based shell theories. Therefore the engineering practice requires new shell models considering higher degrees of freedom besides the displacement and rotation vectors and taking into account the interference of tangential and transversal motions. Here a variant of the N’th order shell model of I.N. Vekua type is analyzed. The proposed model improves the A. Amosov’s shell theory; it is based on the Lagrange’s formalism of analytical mechanics extended to continuum systems, on the dimensional reduction approach, and on the biorthogonal expansion technique. The shell is finally represented by a material surface framed by a set of generalized coordinates (or field variables) and a scalar generator function the surficial density of the Lagrangian. The dynamic equations for the shell are formulated as generalized Lagrange equations of the second kind. A propagation of normal waves in a plane elastic layer is considered, the corresponding homogeneous problem of N’th order plate theory is formulated, and its solution analysis is extended. In particular, the investigation of the second longitudinal propagating mode and its modelling by approximated plate theories are expanded. The main feature of the second mode is the “inverse wave” effect, i.e. the opposite signs of the phase and group velocities at small wavenumbers. It was shown earlier that the accurate dispersion curves for both phase frequency and group velocity can be obtained on the basis of the fourthand fifth-order theories. Using the known solution of the spectral problem of N’th order plate theory the eigenfunctions are obtained. The second propagating mode evaluation at the smallest wavenumbers is modelled, the forms of the second propagating wave are investigated, and the approximation of the waveforms at some wavenumbers by plate theories of various orders is estimated. The accuracy of the approximation of the “inverse wave” by some applied theories of various orders based on the orthogonal expansions of displacement vector is discussed.
