An important task in the research of modern changes in the Earth's climate and the factors determining them is the regular monitoring of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. This paper analyzes the comparison of data from satellite measurements of XCO2 using the infrared Fourier spectrometer IKFS-2 installed on the Russian meteorological satellite Meteor-M No. 2 and measuring outgoing thermal IR radiation, and data from ground-based measurements of XCO2 obtained from solar radiation spectra in the BIC range carried out in Peterhof (St. Petersburg State University) in the period 2019-2022 . The Bruker IFS 125HR Fourier spectrometer of high spectral resolution. The differences between the values of XCO2 obtained from satellite and ground data are in the range of ~ 1%.
We compared the measurements of the СО 2 content in the lower stratosphere (12–18 km altitude layer) using a ground-based Bruker 125HR Fourier-transform spectrometer and ACE satellite measurements in 2009–2019. The analysis of the two types of measurements showed a good agreement between them. On the average, the ground-based CO 2 measurements exceed the satellite data by 2.8 ppm (less than 1%), the standard deviations being ∼5.0 ppm. The correlation coefficient between the measurements by the two methods is 0.77. The ground-based and satellite CO 2 measurements show weak seasonal variations, opposite to those in tropospheric CO 2 : the CO 2 content in the lower stratosphere is maximal in summer and minimal in winter.
We compared ground-based (Bruker 125 HR) and satellite (OCO-2) datasets of simultaneous CO 2 measurements in the vicinity of St. Petersburg. It is shown that correcting the ground-based XCO 2 values by 2.5% and choosing an optimal setup during the spectra analysis allowed us to reach good agreement between the satellite and ground-based measurements. The bias between the two datasets is –0.01—0.16 ppm (–0.00—0.04%) for the means, and the standard deviation of the means is 1.42—1.49 ppm (0.35—0.37%) with a spatial mismatch of XCO 2 data pairs of 100—300 km. Such small disagreement between the two types of measurements permits to use both methods for solving the inverse task of atmospheric transfer — the estimation of anthropogenic emissions of CO 2 .
Spatiotemporal variability of CO2 has been analyzed on the basis of OCO-2 satellite measurements (more than 300 days during 4.5 years and more than 50 000 measurements) in the vicinity of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Magnitogorsk, and Norilsk (circles with radii of 100 km from the city centers). The comparison of the measurements shows the XCO2 datasets with quality flag “0” to be homogeneous, amplitudes of XCO2 variations to be 5–6%, and standard deviations to be lower than 1%. The maximal spatial variations in XCO2 are 2–4%, which significantly differs from the analysis results for OCO-2 data with quality flag “1”.
Ground-based (Bruker 125 HR) and satellite (OCO-2) datasets of simultaneous CO2 measurements in the vicinity of St. Petersburg were compared. Correction of the ground-based XCO2 values by 2.5% and the choice of the optimal setup during spectral analysis allowed good agreement to be reached between the satellite and groundbased measurements. The bias between the two datasets was –0.01–0.16 ppm (–0.00–0.04%), standard deviations of the means, 1.42–1.49 ppm (0.35–0.37%), with a spatial mismatch of the XCO2 data pairs of 100–300 km. Such small disagreement between the two types of measurements permits both methods to be used to solve the inverse problem of atmospheric transfer, i.e., estimation of anthropogenic emissions of CO2.
