Despite the great attention paid to the study of potato diseases, inaccuracies in the names of diseases, their practical significance, and incorrect use of the scientific names of causal agents can be commonly found in the scientific literature. This may lead to confusion and reduces the value of published information in phytosanitary efforts. This review continues the series started with the publications devoted to wheat and barley diseases. This article includes information about the main potato diseases and pathogenic organisms causing them, as well as the species emerging as a potential threat to potato. The current taxonomic status of fungal species and fungus-like organisms associated with various organs of potato is given, and the breadth of their distribution and degree of impact on the crop are summarized. The micromycetes were divided into two groups according to their phytosanitary importance. The first group is represented by fungi of great importance as pathogens causing the 13 economically important potato diseases. The second group consists of fungi causing 25 minor and poorly studied diseases with unconfirmed harmfulness, or potential endophytic fungi. Perceptions of their ability to cause disease remain controversial and the available data require confirmation. This dataset can be used as a reference for a more accurate description of the phytosanitary situation. The review will also be helpful for more targeted studies using molecular techniques to clarify taxonomy and geographic ranges of fungi associated with potato and to provide more detailed data on disease levels in this crop.
Despite the great attention paid to the study of barley diseases, inaccuracies in the names of diseases, their practical significance, and incorrect use of the scientific names of causal agents can be commonly found in the scientific literature. This may lead to confusion and misidentification of the pathogens that can affect this crop especially as relates to phytosanitary requirements. The micromycetes were divided into two groups according to their phytosanitary importance. The first group is represented by fungi of great importance as the pathogens causing the 29 economically important common barley diseases. The second group consists of fungi causing 20 minor and poorly studied diseases with unconfirmed harmfulness, or potential endophytic fungi. Perceptions of their ability to cause disease remain controversial and the available data require confirmation. This dataset can be used as a reference for a more accurate description of the phytosanitary situation. The review will also be helpful for more targeted studies using molecular techniques to clarify taxonomy and areals of fungi associated with barley and to provide more detailed data on disease damage in this crop.
A simple HPLC technique for the quantitative determination of phytotoxins (stagonolide A and herbarumin I) in liquid culture of the fungus Stagonospora cirsii S-47 has been developed. Some examples of its application are given. The technique was tested in a study of effects of the concentration of refined sunflower oil and the cultivation duration on the production level of these toxins. At an oil concentration of 0.5% or higher in modified Czapek medium with vitamins, the accumulation of S. cirsii biomass and the concentration of stagonolide A increased, while the concentration of herbarumin I decreased. Maximal amounts of both phytotoxins were obtained on the tenth day of submerged S. cirsii cultivation in flasks. When S. cirsii was grown in the same medium supplied with 1% of oil in a laboratory bioreactor, the maximal concentration of stagonolide A (116 mg/L) in the liquid culture was achieved after 5 days of fermentation followed by its considerable reduction after 6 days, while after 7 days of the submerged growth the maximal content of herbarumin I (116 mg/L) increased sharply. The technique of the phytotoxins analysis was used to monitor them during their isolation, as well as for preparative HPLC.
Antimicrobial, phytotoxic, and insecticidal activity of 30 fungal isolates obtained from leaves of weeds and wild herbaceous plants was assessed. Antibacterial, antifungal, phytotoxic, and insecticidal activity was found in over 50%, 40, 47, and 40% of the isolates, respectively. These findings may be important for toxicological assessment of potential mycoherbicides, and may also provide a basis for investigation of the patterns of development of phyllosphere communities affected by fungal metabolites.
