The kinetics of alkaline hydrolysis of the dicarboximide fungicides procymidone, iprodione, vinclozolin, and chlozolinate (1-4, respectively) were investigated in micellar solutions containing various amounts of either sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), or three nonionic surfactants (two C-13 alcohols and a copra amine combined with ethoxyl chains) and compared with the kinetics in aqueous media. For all compounds, the rate constants observed are slightly reduced by the SDS micellar media, showing that reactions essentially take place in the aqueous pseudophase. The CTAB micellar media speed up the hydrolysis rates with small quantities of Br- ions in the medium. As the number of Br- ions increases, the rate of reactions falls. This is characteristic of an ion exchange (OH- and Br-) at the surface of the CTAB micelles. Finally, the presence of nonionic micelles has little influence on the hydrolysis of the fungicides: the reduction in the rate of dicarboximide ring opening is attributed to micelle-substrate association. These results can be explained by means of the pseudophase kinetic model coupled with the mechanisms of hydrolysis of these fungicides in water solution.

A new method for synthesis of alkyl azides is described. These compounds with long alkyl-chains, insoluble in water, are surfactants and micellize in formamide.

We recently demonstrated that it is possible to prepare waterless microemulsions by replacing water with formamide. Using the Diels-Alder reaction between methyl acrylate and cyclopentadiene as a chemical probe, we were able to explore the monophasic areas of both ionic and non-ionic surfactant solutions in formamide. Discontinuities in reaction selectivity indicate the presence of structured phases.
The use of the Diels-Alder reaction between methyl acrylate and cyclopentadiene as a chemical probe has demonstrated two distinct zones in the formamide microemulsion system. Good selectivity and high yields can be obtained from Diels-Alder reactions in formamide.
AbstractIn deaerated media containing hydrogen sulfide, the inhibition of the corrosion of N 80 steel by a homologous series of imidazolines was measured potentiokinetically. The data obtained were correlated to the structure of these molecules by means of Free and Wilson relationships. These correlations, allowed the behaviour of some derivatives to be predicted successfully.
In deaerated media containing hydrogen sulfide, the inhibition of the corrosion of steel by homologous series of aliphatic amines and imidazolines was measured potentiokinetically. The data obtained were correlated successfully to the hydrophobicity and the polarity (calculated parameter) of these molecules by means of Hansch relationship.
The corrosion inhibition of N 80 steel in deaerated media containing hydrogen sulfide by homologous series of imidazolines and imidazoles was measured potentiokinetically. The results show that the behaviour of these compounds in solution is related to the adsorption process at the electrode-solution interface. In the conditions used the inhibitors work better at concentrations greater than those of critical aggregation.
Evidence is given for the involvement of hydrophobic interactions in the retention of hydrocarbons in oil fields. A prerequisite is that the surface of the reservoir rock has to be hydrophobic. This was obtained through adsorption of lipophilic polar compounds. The isotherms for the adsorption of dodecylamine hydrochloride and N-hexadecylpyridine hydrochloride were plotted. The treated quartz could take up large amounts of toluene. The relationships between some features of the isotherms and the retention phenomenon have been analysed. The effect of water-structuring additives (e.g. LiF, CaCl2, NaF and guanidine hydrochloride) on the recovery of hydrocarbons was investigated by means of static and dynamic methods.
