The composition of vapors from aqueous nitric acid solutions boiling at 200 mm mercury total pressure is established for solutions containing between 0 and 67,5 tv/o nitric acid. The volatility characteristics of low concentrations of chloride in the same concentration range of nitric acid have been measured in solutions boiling at 200 mm mercury. The effects of chloride concentration and pressure of boiling are evaluated. A spectrophotometric method for the determination of chloride in nitric acid solutions is described.
Dissolution of camotite in several readily liquefiable gases, including ammonia, sulfur dioxide and trioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and chlorine, was found to be negligible, even in the presence of uranium complexing agents.No low-boiling liquids were found which would dissolve camotite directly.
was limited to the two most promising processes: countercurrent leaching of raw shale wiih sulfuric acid and oxygen pressure leaching in which leaching and acid production are simultaneously achieved. Mention is also made of a possible third method, high temperature chlorination of shale. The costs of producing uranium from Chattanooga Shale by countercurrent acid leaching or by oxygen pressure leaching are estimated in detail. (P.C.H.)
