FeB and FeBN surface alloys were produced by several deposition and ion-mixing procedures including ion bombardment of multilayer configurations and ion-beam-enhanced deposition. The surface treatments examined were boron and BN deposited on iron. Fe/B/Fe/B… multilayers deposited on iron and analogous samples implanted with krypton ions (Kr+) or nitrogen ions (N2+) at an energy of 160 keV.
Iron or nickel substrates were coated with thin films of tin (or boron) and bombarded with 100 keV Xe+ ions (or N+ ions). Surface modifications were studied using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and Auger electron spectroscopy.
