A matching task between sentences voiced with joyful, angry, or sad intonation and pictures of facial expressions representing the same emotions is proposed to 27 aphasics and 20 normal subjects. Semantic contents are either meaningless, neutral, or affectively loaded. In the affective-meaning condition, content is redundant with prosody or conflicting with it. Results are 1. a greater number of nonprosodic choices in the aphasic group; 2. an identical influence of the congruence/conflict variable on aphasics and control subjects; 3. an identical influence of the semantic content of the conflict sentences on both groups. Aphasic impairment is interpreted as purely quantitative, since affective semantic content influences the decoding of the sentences.
[Denomination of Images in Aphasic Patients Influence of Three Different Nonverbal Contexts] The analysis of the effect of three different oral naming contexts (neutral, semantic and functional) doesn’t give rise to any significative difference in sixteen aphasic patients. This result is discussed according to recent works about the same topic.
The authors report on a 37 year old right-handed patient with a right rolando-parietal infarct which was manifest clinically by not only sensory-motor disorders of the left side of the body, but more especially by an expression aphasia. This observation fulfills the criteria for defining the exceptional case of crossed aphasia in a right-handed patient: aphasic destruction of language engendered by a right unilateral lesion in such a patient, without a previous history of a cerebral lesion or family history of left-handedness. Comparing the aphasic signs in this patient with the rare cases reported in the published literature shows that there is a particular pathognomonic profile, close to the type of aphasic disorganization seen in children and left-handed adults. The authors review the neuropsychopathogenic explanations for this crossed aphasia of right-handed patients.
