This paper presents new records and noteworthy data on the following taxa in SE Europe and adjacent regions: brown alga Heribaudiella fluviatilis, fungi Holmiella sabina, Lysurus cruciatus, and Psathyrella ammophila, lichen Umbilicaria subpolyphylla, liverwort Kurzia pauciflora, mosses Climacium dendroides, Dicranella howei, Fissidens rivularis, F. viridulus, and Sphagnum papillosum, dicots Hesperis matronalis subsp. candida, Hieracium gaudryi, Lythrum hyssopifolia, Lythrum tribracteatum, and Taraxacum janchenii and monocots Allium moschatum, Cyperus esculentus, Dactylorhiza x aschersoniana, Dactylorhiza incarnata, Ophrys insectifera, and Schoenoplectus litoralis.
The aim of this study is to explore the bryophyte diversity and distribution patterns of bryoflora of certain peatlands the Apuseni Mountains. From our twenty-six collection sites, all being representative peat bogs and fens for this mountain unit, hitherto 64 bryophyte taxa (6 liverworts and 58 mosses) were identified. The most frequent and abundant species are Sphagnum capillifolium, S. centrale, S. cuspidatum, S. flexuosum, Polytrichum commune and P. juniperoideum. Besides these, some other species could be considered rare, having a great biogeographical and nature conservation importance. Among them, the endangered (EN) Sphagnum tenellum, the vulnerable (VU) Hamatocaulis vernicosus, Helodium blandowii, Hygrohypnella ochracea, Odontoschisma fluitans and the not evaluated (NE) Sphagnum affine worth mentioning. Several species are reported with new localities of occurrence in the Apuseni Mts. and others confirmed in their previously known localities. Thus, the results of this study significantly contribute to the knowledge the bryoflora of Romania.
A computer-assisted identification (CAI) key, created by the XPer3 software, is presented based on the description of the genus Bazzania (Lepidoziaceae) in Madagascar. The knowledge database is presented along with automatically generated keys and static keys, which are both produced by the software. Although these tools are powerful and user-friendly, expert competence is essential both for building the database and providing relevant keys.

Madagascar is a center of diversity in Africa for the liverwort genus Bazzania Gray (1821: 704), with about 80% of African Bazzania species (11 out of 14 spp.) occurring on Madagascar and about half of them being endemic to the island (Wigginton 2018, Sass-Gyarmati & Pocs 2019, 2021; Sass-Gyarmati & Reeb 2021). In this paper we deal with the taxonomic and nomenclatural status of Bazzania madagassa (Stephani 1924: 473) Arnell (1965: 66), a species known only from Madagascar. This species was first described by Stephani (1924) as Mastigobryum madagassum Stephani (1924: 473) and was transferred to Bazzania by Arnell (1965). The new combination Bazzania madagassa was not validly published there, however, because the basionym was not cited. Ten years later, Jones (1975) suggested that B. madagassa might be a synonym of the common and variable B. decrescens (Lehm. & Lindenb., in Lehmann 1832: 57) Trevisan (1877: 414), but the type specimen of B. madagassa was not studied. A phytochemical analysis, however, showed that B. madagassa differs from B. decrescens in the presence of myltaylane- and cyclomyltaylane-type sesquiterpenes (Harinantenaina et al. 2005, 2006). The latter are rare metabolites that have also been detected in B. japonica (Sande Lacoste 1864: 303) Lindberg (1872: 224) and B. tridens (Reinwardt, Blume & Nees 1824: 228) Trevisan (1877: 415), but not in B. decrescens. As the name B. madagassa is invalid, the species was not included in the World Checklist (S8derstr8m et al. 2016). In the course of the work of the first author on Bazzania in Madagascar, we have studied the type of B. madagassa and found that the species merits recognition. The purpose of this paper is to validate and lectotypify the name Bazzania madagassa and provide a description and illustration of the species together with a brief discussion of its taxonomic affinity.
This updated checklist of Marchantiophyta (liverworts) of Andasibé (Périnet) region, Madagascar was compiled from the literature, from herbarium specimens and recent collections. A total of 222 species including 9 infraspecific taxa, from 62 genera are recorded. Five species: Cheilolejeunea ngongensis Malombe et Pócs, Cheilolejeunea unciloba (Lindenb.) Malombe, Heteroscyphus grandistipus (Steph.) Schiffn., Lejeunea angulifolia Mitt. and Kymatocalyx africanus Vána et Wigginton are newly reported for Madagascar. Detailed informations on species occurrences are provided as a basis for subsequent research on species distributions and conservation.
Jelen tanulmány középpontjában a gyógynövények ismerete és felhasználási lehetőségeinek integrálása áll a biológia oktatásában, továbbá a gyógynövények alkalmazásának előnyei. Ez a terület számos más tudományterülettel összefonódik, emellett a gyógynövényismeret hozzájárul a tanulók egészségtudatosságához és természetes gyógymódok iránti érdeklődésük felkeltéséhez. Érdemes meg jegyezni, hogy jelenleg a gyógynövények alkalmazása újra a reneszánszát éli. A kutatáshoz a középiskolás tanulók szolgáltak célcsoportul. Féltételezéseink alapján a gyógynövényekre vonatkozó ismereteik felszínesek, így a cél az volt, hogy egy minél gyakorlatorientáltabb és komplexebb képet alakítsunk ki számukra: a történelmi kezdeti időktől fogva a háttértudáson keresztül egészen a jelenkori tudás alkalmazásáig. Megvalósított szakkörön belül változatos pedagógiai módszereket és tudományos elemeket ötvöztünk. A tanulmány elején felvetett hipotézisek igazolást nyertek a foglalkozás végére, a tanulók számára kifejlesztett interaktív feladatok eredményes alkalmazása megvalósult. A tanóra élményszerűsége a tanulók számára kiemelkedően lényeges szempont volt, így a tapasztalataink alapján terveink közé került, hogy a jövőben akár terepgyakorlat formájában is szeretnénk átadni a természet által szolgáltatott természeti kincseinkkel kapcsolatos ismereteket.
The prevalence of fructan-producing plants is primarily restricted to the temperate climate, while they are virtually absent from the tropical regions. Although the Sphagnum genus has a worldwide distribution and considerable ecological importance, it is relatively rare for the whole of tropical Africa. The island of Réunion is located in the tropical climate and has a rich Sphagnum flora containing 14 species. Sphagnum species - as an exception amongst mosses - synthesise fructan and have a considerable amount of sucrose as well. No data on fructan content of Sphagnum occuring in tropical habitats have been reported so far. This short paper provided data first, based on experimental results, on the non-structural carbohydrate pool, especially fructans in Sphagnum species from a tropical region, from Réunion Island. Fructans accounted for 2-4% of the total soluble carbohydrates in the examined Sphagnum species. We compared the fructan content of eight Sphagnum species collected from Réunion in relation to their altitude zone and their distribution. The species generally increased their fructan accumulation as the altitude increased. Our preliminary experimental results show that fructans as an alternative storage carbohydrate to starch may play a role in the ecological niche preference of the Sphagnum species according to altitudinal zones.
It is evident that the bryophyte flora of the Cook Islands remains poorly documented. Here, ten moss species and five liverwort species of Lepidoziaceae are newly reported for the Cook Islands. These records include Calomnion denticulatum, previously known only from Samoa, Ectropothecium viridifolium, previously known only from Hawai’i, and Tricholepidozia quadriseta, previously known only from Australia. Also, thirteen new island records of mosses are reported for Outer Islands of the group and additional information is provided for some previously published reports.
The paper describes the Malagasy collections in the cryptogamic herbarium of the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University (EGR), Eger (Hungary), according to its condition in 2022.All specimens were documented: all data from the labels were entered into MS Excel spreadsheet, and in the case of type material digital photographs are also taken.The oldest Malagasy specimens hosted in the herbarium are the isotypes of Brachymenium borgenianum Hampe and Bryum subargenteum Hampe, both specimens collected by M. Borgen in 1870.The main aim was to digitalize and publish information on the cryptogam herbarium in order to provide an easier access to the data.The digital photographs and the database are property of the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology of Eszterházy Károly Catholic University.Data of Madagascar specimens database are summarized in an electronic appendix including: catalogue number, taxon name, collector, locality, date of gathering and file name of the documentary photograph.

Herbaria have been always used mostly by researchers dealing with systematic botany, taxonomy or flora of a certain area, providing insight into the variety of plant taxa and their distribution. Preserved specimens can also be used for molecular and phylogenetic research. In addition to their scientific mission, herbaria play an important role in botanical education. Besides traditional utilization of herbaria, there are a huge possibilities using virtual plant collections as well. The main target of this article is to highlight more important hungarian and worldwide-used plant online resources suitable for botany teaching to the students as well as wide public at Herbarium of Eszterházy Károly University, Eger (EGR).
