Dermatology, and more specifically cutaneous oncology, has evolved from a descriptive science concept towards multifaceted medico-surgical medicine which is nowadays based not only on observation. In this view, the importance of prevention and early detection of skin cancers including cutaneous melanoma has been recognized and has created a new challenge. Thanks to this proactive approach, the improvement in the prognosis of newly diagnosed melanomas has been demonstrated, but many efforts have to be brought to reduce the incidence and the mortality of this potentially aggressive tumor.

La dermatologie, et en particulier la cancerologie cutanee, a evolue d'une science descriptive vers une discipline aux multiples facettes medicales et chirurgicales n'autorisant plus la simple observation. C'est dans ce contexte que s'est developpee une prise de conscience de l'importance de la prevention et du depistage des cancers cutanes, et plus particulierement du melanome cutane. Grâce a cette attitude proactive, l'amelioration progressive du pronostic des melanomes diagnostiques a deja pu etre demontree, mais de nombreux efforts doivent encore etre apportes pour reduire l'incidence et la mortalite de cette tumeur a grand potentiel metastatique.
