P-683 Abstract: The impacts of the disturbance and resultant oxidation of sulphidic soils are well documented with a major feature being the formation of sulphuric acid resulting in the erosion of buffering capacity of soil and water with a subsequent increase in acidity and mobilization of metals in connected groundwater. In Western Australia, numerous areas have been affected where high concentrations of metals have been detected in residential groundwater sources. We hypothesize that the elevated metals pose a risk to residents watering home grown produce. Previous investigation has shown a high percentage of residents grow home grown produce in affected areas. We have therefore undertaken a further preliminary investigation of human exposure recruiting 30 residents in an affected area, twenty two using a bore (groundwater) for home grown produce irrigation and 8 without a bore. The participants provided samples of urine, toenails, hair, soil and bore water and completed a questionnaire on the use of the water. The samples were analysed using ICP-MS. Water metal concentrations were generally lower than previous investigations with median, minimum and maximum concentrations (mg/L) as follows; aluminium of <0.005L (<0.005–9); arsenic <0.001 (<0.001–0.003); cadmium <0.0001 (<0.0001 -0.001) and lead 0.0004 (<0.0001–0.013). Gastro-oesophageal reflux is a common phenomenon in infancy, and medical intervention is usually unnecessary. If reflux causes illness, it is referred to as ‘gastro-oesophageal reflux disease’. Such patients require investigation and treatment. This review considers the epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology and clinical effects of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The role of various investigations and the choice of therapeutic strategy are discussed.
