We study the harmonic locus consisting of the monodromy-free Schrödinger operators with rational potential and quadratic growth at infinity. It is known after Oblomkov that it can be identified with the set of all partitions via the Wronskian map for Hermite polynomials. We show that the harmonic locus can also be identified with the subset of Wilson’s Calogero–Moser space that is fixed by the symplectic action of ℂ^× . As a corollary, for the multiplicity-free part of the locus we effectively solve the inverse problem for the Wronskian map by describing the partition in terms of the spectrum of the corresponding Moser matrix. We also compute the characters of the ℂ^× -action at the fixed points, proving, in particular, a conjecture of Conti and Masoero. In the Appendix written by N. Nekrasov there is an alternative proof of this result, based on the space of instantons and the ADHM construction.
We establish a surprising relation of the smooth theta-divisor $\Theta^n$ with permutohedron $\Pi^n$ and the corresponding toric variety $X_\Pi^n.$ In particular, we show that the generalised Todd genus of the theta divisor $\Theta^n$ coincides with $h$-polynomial of permutohedron $\Pi^n$ and thus is different from the same genus of $X_\Pi^n$ only by the sign $(-1)^n.$ As an application we find all the Hodge numbers of the theta divisors in terms of the Eulerian numbers. We reveal also interesting numerical relations between theta-divisors and Tomei manifolds from the theory of the integrable Toda lattice.
We study analytic properties of ``$q$-deformed real numbers'', a notion recently introduced by two of us. A $q$-deformed positive real number is a power series with integer coefficients in one formal variable~$q$. We study the radius of convergence of these power series assuming that $q$ is a complex variable. Our main conjecture, which can be viewed as a $q$-analogue of Hurwitz's Irrational Number Theorem, claims that the $q$-deformed golden ratio has the smallest radius of convergence among all real numbers. The conjecture is proved for certain class of rational numbers and confirmed by a number of computer experiments. We also prove the explicit lower bounds for the radius of convergence for the $q$-deformed convergents of golden and silver ratios.
In 1956 Hirzebruch found an explicit formula for the denominators of the Todd polynomials, which was proved later in his joint work with Atiyah. We present a new formula for the Todd polynomials in terms of the ``forgotten symmetric functions", which follows from our previous work on complex cobordisms. In particular, this leads to a simpler proof of the Hirzebruch formula and provides new interpretations for the Hirzebruch numbers.
We establish a link between the new theory of $q$-deformed rational numbers and the classical Burau representation of the braid group ${\mathcal {B}}_{3}$. We apply this link to the open problem of classification of faithful complex specializations of this representation. As a result we provide an answer to this problem in terms of the singular set of the $q$-rationals and prove the faithfulness of the Burau representation specialized at complex $t\in {\mathbb {C}}<^>{*}$ outside the annulus $3-2\sqrt 2 \leq |t| \leq 3+2\sqrt 2.$
We study a delay-differential analogue of the first Painlevé equation obtained as a delay periodic reduction of Shabat's dressing chain. We construct formal entire solutions to this equation and introduce a new family of polynomials (called Bernoulli-Catalan polynomials), which are defined by a nonlinear recurrence of Catalan type, and which share properties with Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. We also discuss meromorphic solutions and describe the singularity structure of this delay Painlevé-I equation in terms of an affine Weyl group of type $A_1^{(1)}$. As an application we demonstrate the link with the problem of calculation of the Masur-Veech volumes of the moduli spaces of meromorphic quadratic differentials by re-deriving some of the known formulas.
We show that the smooth theta divisors of general principally polarised abelian varieties can be chosen as irreducible algebraic representatives of the coefficients of the Chern-Dold character in complex cobordisms and describe the action of the Landweber-Novikov operations on them. We introduce a quantisation of the complex cobordism theory with the dual Landweber-Novikov algebra as the deformation parameter space and show that the Chern-Dold character can be interpreted as the composition of quantisation and dequantisation maps. Some smooth real-analytic representatives of the cobordism classes of theta divisors are described in terms of the classical Weierstrass elliptic functions. The link with the Milnor-Hirzebruch problem about possible characteristic numbers of irreducible algebraic varieties is discussed.
The geodesic problem on the compact threefolds with the Riemannian metric of Bianchi-VII0 type is studied in both classical and quantum cases. We show that the problem is integrable and describe the eigenfunctions of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operators explicitly in terms of the Mathieu functions with parameter depending on the lattice values of some binary quadratic forms. We use the results from number theory to discuss the level spacing statistics in relation with the Berry-Tabor conjecture and compare the situation with Bianchi-VI0 case (Sol-case in Thurston's classification) and with Bianchi-IX case, corresponding to the classical Euler top.
Recently Valentin Ovsienko introduced a ``shadow" version of the celebrated Markov triples as the solutions of certain version of Markov equation over dual numbers. We will discuss similar question for the Mordell Diophantine equation $$ X^2+Y^2+Z^2=2XYZ+1. $$ We will see that the shadows of the special solution $(1,1,1)$ can be described using the original Conway topograph of the values of binary quadratic forms. The shadows of other Mordell triples will be written explicitly in terms of the corresponding solutions of Pell's equation. Their growth along the paths on the Conway topograph is described in terms of the Lyapunov function of the Euclid tree.
We introduce and study certain hyperbolic versions of automorphic Lie algebras related to the modular group. Let $\Gamma$ be a finite index subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ with an action on a complex simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$, which can be extended to $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. We show that the Lie algebra of the corresponding $\mathfrak{g}$-valued modular forms is isomorphic to the extension of $\mathfrak{g}$ over the usual modular forms. This establishes a modular analogue of a well-known result by Kac on twisted loop algebras. The case of principal congruence subgroups $\Gamma(N), \, N\leq 6$ are considered in more details in relation to the classical results of Klein and Fricke and the celebrated Markov Diophantine equation. We finish with a brief discussion of the extensions and representations of these Lie algebras.
In 2022, V. M. Buchstaber, A. P. Veselov, and the author proved a number of classification results for involutive commutative two-valued groups, including a complete classification in the finitely generated case. In the present note, we prove that any involutive two-valued group is commutative, so all these results are valid without the assumption of commutativity.
In 1896 Frobenius and Fricke had published two seemingly unrelated papers: Frobenius had started to develop his theory of k-characters for finite groups motivated by Dedekind's question about factorisation of the group determinant, while Fricke followed Klein's approach to the uniformization theorem. We show that in fact these two works can be naturally linked and both are related to remarkable Markov's paper of 1880 on arithmetic of binary quadratic forms.
We give a simple derivation of the spectrum of the Dirac magnetic monopole on a unit sphere S 2 based on geometric quantization and the Frobenius reciprocity formula. The starting point is the calculation by Novikov and Schmelzer of the canonical symplectic structure on the coadjoint orbits of the isometry group of 3-dimensional Euclidean space E(3), which showed the appearance of the Dirac magnetic term.
We use the results of Moser and Knörrer on relations between geodesics on quadrics and solutions of the classical Neumann system to describe explicitly the geodesic scattering on hyperboloids. We explain the relation of Knörrer’s reparametrisation with projectively equivalent metrics on quadrics introduced by Tabachnikov and independently by Matveev and Topalov, giving a new proof of their result. We show that the projectively equivalent metric is regular on the projective closure of hyperboloids and extend Knörrer’s map to this closure.
The ∨-systems are special finite sets of covectors which appeared in the theory of the generalized Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde (WDVV) equations.Several families of ∨-systems are known, but their classification is an open problem. We derive the relations describing the infinitesimal deformations of ∨-systems and use them to study the classification problem for ∨-systems in dimension three. We discuss also possible matroidal structures of ∨-systems in relation with projective geometry and give the catalogue of all known irreducible rank three ∨-systems.
We review the integrability of the geodesic flow on a threefold M-3 admitting one of the three group geometries in Thurston's sense. We focus on the SL(2, R) case. The main examples are the quotients M-Gamma(3) = Gamma\ PSL(2, R), where Gamma subset of PSL(2, R) is a cofinite Fuchsian group. We show that the corresponding phase space T * M-Gamma(3) contains two open regions with integrable and chaotic behaviour, with zero and positive topological entropy, respectively. As a concrete example we consider the case of the modular threefold with the modular group G = PSL(2, Z). In this case M-Gamma(3) is known to be homeomorphic to the complement of a trefoil knot K in a 3-sphere. Ghys proved the remarkable fact that the lift of a periodic geodesic on the modular surface to M-Gamma(3) produces the same isotopy class of knots as that which appears in the chaotic version of the celebrated Lorenz system and was studied in detail by Birman and Williams. We show that these knots are replaced by trefoil knot cables in the integrable limit of the geodesic system on M-Gamma(3).
We study the tropical version of Markov dynamics on the Cayley cubic, introduced by V.E. Adler and one of the authors. We show that this action is semi-conjugated to the standard action of SL2(Z) on a torus, and thus is ergodic with the Lyapunov exponent and entropy given by the logarithm of the spectral radius of the corresponding matrix.
We classify certain integrable (both classical and quantum) generalisations of Dirac magnetic monopole on topological sphere S 2 with constant magnetic field, completing the previous local results by Ferapontov, Sayles and Veselov. We show that there are two integrable families of such generalisations with integrals, which are quadratic in momenta. The first family corresponds to the classical Clebsch systems, which can be interpreted as Dirac magnetic monopole in harmonic electric field. The second family is new and can be written in terms of elliptic functions on sphere S 2 with very special metrics.
Conway’s topographic approach to binary quadratic forms and Markov triples is reviewed from the point of view of the theory of two-valued groups. This leads naturally to a new class of commutative two-valued groups, which we call involutive. It is shown that the two-valued group of Conway’s lax vectors plays a special role in this class. The group
