This article presents a framework which enables end users to create small, sharply focused mobile services directly on a mobile device. By this, end users are no longer only consumers of mobile services; they also become producers and providers of mobile services. The domain of mobile health and fitness applications has been chosen to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. The article presents the underlying platform for easy creation of mobile services and describes the implementation of a Web-based editor for easy mobile service creation as well as our solution to access device capabilities out of Web applications.
Location-based services have faced a development from being a hype to be used by a large user community at any place and time. However, only a few approaches exist, that take into account social interactions and learn from them in order to refine recommendations of points of interests accordingly. This paper analyzes the influence factors of mobile users for the choice of interests and derives an adaptable ranking function, that is capable of adjusting preferential weights on certain influence factors in order to learn from user behavior using ontology evolution. The Cool City Use Case demonstrates the application of the approach in a big city and shows how this adaptive learning can improve social recommendations of points of interests.

This use case enables hobby runners to create p rsonalized, contextaware versions of mobile services tailored to their specific personal preferences, health conditions a nd training plans. Based on these features, a semantic knowledge base allows for the context-aware search and recommendations f or ervice creation, discovery and usage. Compared to traditional consum er-centric health care systems, the depicted approa ch will be more personalized and context-aware and will empower phy sicians and personal trainers to act more timely th an before.
This paper introduces a preliminary approach and evaluation for a social recommendation mechanism for location-based services (LBS). Many approaches for recommending location-based services do not take into account other factors than spatial ones. This paper focuses on social interactions and a focused ranking method to support social recommendations. The qualitative and quantitative evaluation at the end of the paper demonstrates, that users find social recommendations more useful than the conventional ones.
This paper presents an architecture proposal for mobile services. It covers server-side and terminal-side components for the easy creation, provision and consumption of mobile services. The intrinsic characteristics of mobile services are reflected in this approach. Especially the role of the poweruser, that not only consumes mobile services but also modifies them or creates services of his own, is in the focus of this design. The paper concludes with a proof-of-concept that has been carried out in a European research project.
So far, several websites exist where runners can request route information. Those systems are rather complex and lack a mobile-specific design. Thus, we propose a mobile running route recommender system (RRR) which supports the user while running or while planning the running route. The gathering and modeling of the route and its context/environment is discussed in respect of computational performance. A four dimensional plugin based ranking function is established that considers location-, time-, content-, and community-specific route features which cover all data types in our database. A conceptual model shows how the runner's physical condition could be involved by predicting the heart rate for certain routes. Therefore, Artificial Neural Networks are chosen as data mining methodology to extend the existing recommender system.

The ITEA2 research project uService is building a framework to enable end users to create small, sharply focused mobile services directly on the mobile device. By this, end users are no longer only consumers of mobile services but also producers and providers, so-called 'mobile super prosumers'. In the project, the scenario 'uRun' serves as an application example for the uService framework in the field of health and fitness mobile applications. The goal is to provide a mobile assistant for runners, for the times before, during and after a run. In this article, we present our survey results on experienced runners' expectations on beneficial mobile services. We then describe how end users can create mobile services in the running application domain by means of the uService framework and explain the envisioned business models.
The prosumer movement has made a great impact in different areas of the consumer goods industry and provides new market opportunities for both individuals and companies. The following article investigates the implications of the prosumer movement taking the perspective of companies. Examples from different industries are provided which incorporate different aspects of the prosumer movement. Based on this, requirements are derived for an IT-enabled, "prosumerized" enterprise and a draft of such an enterprise architecture is outlined.

The project uService investigates the transformation of a mobile user into a service super prosumer, i.e., a producer, provider and consumer of services at the same time. The goal is to develop a platform which enables a user to create, discover and consume mobile services anywhere and at any time on the mobile device. uRun is an application scenario of the project in the field of mobile health and fitness. The uRun framework provides a mobile assistance system particularly for runners, which combines Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies and personalized and situation-aware recommendation mechanisms. The ability to create individual and mobile health and fitness services as well as a personalized and situation-aware assistance system based on a semantic knowledge base are considered to provide an edge over existing consumer-centric health care systems. In this article, we describe the recommendation mechanism and the incorporation of semantic knowledge for the uService platform and the uRun framework.
Das europäische Forschungsprojekt uService hat die Entwicklung von Werkzeugen und einer Infrastruktur zum Ziel, so dass Endnutzer mit ihren Handys mobile Dienste für sich und andere Nutzer einerseits erstellen und andererseits nutzergenerierte Dienste verwenden können. Dienste, die auf diese Weise von Nutzern für Nutzer erstellt werden, sind typischerweise stark auf einen Anwendungsbereich fokussiert und adressieren jeweils eine bestimmte Zielgruppe. Die deutschen uService Partner konzentrieren ihre Arbeiten auf den Anwendungsbereich der individuellen Gesundheitsvorsorge durch Sport, insbesondere Laufen. Es soll eine auf uService-Konzepten basierende Plattform für das „uRun“ Szenario entwickelt werden. Die Plattform zielt ab auf mobile Dienste, die Menschen bei ihren sportlichen Tätigkeiten unterstützen, z.B. bei der Suche nach geeigneten Laufstrecken oder Laufpartnern. Im Paper werden eine Analyse vom Stand der Technik, die Beschreibung eines Anwendungsszenarios und das Konzept der Plattform vorgestellt. In the near future, the trend of user-generated content and services currently observable in the Internet domain will also affect the mobile environment: mobile users will become able to easily create content and small services while on the move and offer them to social communities. Mobile users will no longer be pure consumers, they will also become producers and providers of mobile content and services. However, to let this vision come true, a new mobile service platform has to be built and established. In this article we are surveying relevant aspects, like service technologies, semantic search and recommendation mechanisms, revenue sharing, and security technologies. Based on that survey, requirements and challenges are identified. By means of an application scenario from the health and fitness domain, we present a first concept for a platform that allows for building virtual communities with easy and inherent support for real physical meetings.
The European FP7 research project m:Ciudad - a metropolis of ubiquitous services - aims at the empowerment of users to create services on mobile terminals. The project demonstrates various scenarios in which users either act as creator of services or interact with the system to search for services or service construction components. The search and recommendation process in the system facilitates retrieval of related entities and shows the results to the users according to their preference and contextual information. The paper demonstrates an approach to integrate contextual information with other search attributes to enable efficient service retrieval and recommendation in mobile user and application scenarios. The specifics of a mobile environment are taken into consideration and are reflected in the design of the m:Ciudad Search and Recommendation Engine. We discuss how context-awareness and proactivity can be implemented and utilised for mobile services.
