The COVID-19 pandemic has a negative impact on people's living conditions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa in vulnerable and low-income families. The aim of this work is to analyze the socio-demographic profile of people who engaged in food sales activities during the COVID-19 lockdown in Brazzaville, as well as their coping and survival strategies. The study, which used a mixed (qualitative and quantitative) approach, included 716 people (241 men and 475 women) aged 18 to 72 years residing in four communes in the southern zone of Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. The main study inclusion criterion was the practice of selling food during COVID-19 lockdown. However, we did not include people whose profession had been selling these products prior to the health crisis. The qualitative data collected during the interviews concerned information on vendors, sales locations, coping strategies used to find the products sold, and sales prices. As for the qualitative data assessed using a food questionnaire, they were summarized in terms of the quality and quantity of food consumed, which made it possible to assess daily energy intake and therefore the level of food security. The results showed that the sellers, with an average age of 42.7, had a relatively low level of education and lived in a medium-sized family (8). Of these, 21.8% were food insecure. Foodstuffs sold were dominated by miscellaneous products (48.2%), street foods (26.7%), ready-made meals (22.3%), cassava flour (17.4%) and fruit and vegetables (7.5%). Salted fish, smoked fish and frozen (imported) meat products were also sold. As far as prepared dishes were concerned, grilled meats of various kinds were the most popular. Sales outlets included state markets, neighborhood markets, storefronts and street markets for auctions. The use of rickshaws and wheelbarrows by a few money-seeking youngsters enabled the products purchased to be transported from the places of purchase to the various markets or sales sites. In short, given the absence of an effective distribution and marketing policy in the food system in times of crisis in the Congo, our results call into question the resilience of vulnerable populations in the face of the country's sociosanitary crises.
Context and objective. Lipid changes in obese children in Black Africa are poorly documented. The objectives of the present study to determine the lipid profile in obese adolescents and to analyze the associations between some anthropometric and lipid parameters. Methods. The cross-sectional study was conducted in Brazzaville among 82 adolescents aged 11 to 18 years, divided into 45 obese, 17 overweight, and 20 normal weight subjects. Measurements of height, weight, waist circumference, subscapular and tricipital skin folds were taken. Blood samples were taken to determine total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations. Results. Lipid concentrations in obese adolescents were significantly higher than those in normal weight subjects: total cholesterol, 1.70 vs. 1.59g/L; LDL-cholesterol, 1.03 vs. 0.88g/L; triglycerides, 1.18 vs. 0.86. However, HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower: 0.42 vs 0.51g/L. A positive correlation was found between waist circumference/height ratio and HDL cholesterol (r=0.75; p=0.031). Conclusion. Our results highlight the need to strengthen the management of obese children to prevent potential risk factors for cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Contexte & objectif. Les modifications lipidiques chez les enfants obèses en Afrique noire sont peu documentées. Les objectifs de la présente étude étaient de déterminer chez les adolescents obèses le profil lipidique, et analyser les associations entre quelques paramètres anthropométriques et lipidiques. Méthodes. L’étude transversale a été réalisée à Brazzaville auprès de 82 adolescents âgés de 11 à 18 ans, répartis en 45 sujets obèses, 17 en état de surpoids et 20 poids normal. Des mesures de la taille, du poids, du tour de taille, des plis cutanés sous-scapulaire et tricipital ont été effectuées. Des prélèvements sanguins ont permis de déterminer les concentrations en cholestérol total, cholestérol-LDL, cholestérol-HDL et triglycérides. Résultats. Les concentrations lipidiques notées chez les adolescents obèses étaient significativement supérieures à celles des sujets de poids normal : cholestérol total, 1,70 vs 1,59g/L ; cholestérol-LDL, 1,03 vs 0,88g/L ; triglycérides, 1,18 vs 0,86. Par contre, celles du cholestérol-HDL étaient significativement inférieures : 0,42 vs 0,51g/L. Une corrélation positive a été retrouvée entre le rapport tour de taille/taille et le cholestérol-HDL (r=0,75 ; p=0,031). Conclusion. Nos résultats soulignent la nécessité de renforcer la prise en charge des enfants obèses afin de prévenir les facteurs de risque potentiels des maladies cardiovasculaires à l’âge adulte.
Obesity-induced hematologic changes in children in sub-Saharan Africa are poorly documented.The aim of this study is to determine obese adolescents' hematological profiles and analyze the associations between some anthropometric and hematological parameters.A cross-sectional and comparative study was carried out in Brazzaville among adolescents attending school.A total of 82 adolescents (aged 11 -17 years: mean age: 14.9 years), were enrolled in the study and were divided into 45 obese, 17 overweight and 20 normal-weight subjects.Anthropometric measurements were performed.Blood samples were taken to determine the number of leukocytes, red blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels.Our results show that values of hematological parameters noted in obese adolescents were significantly higher than normal-weight subjects: leukocytes, 7.14 vs. 6.17 (×10 12 /L); red blood cells, 4.90 vs. 4.84 (×10 6 /mm 3 ); platelets, 305.03 vs. 380.41(×10 6 /L), hemoglobin, 14.16 vs. 13.92(g/dL), hematocrit, 42.62% vs. 40.83%.The same trend was found after adjustment for age and sex.After adjustment for age, the BMI Z-score remained closely correlated with all hematological variables.Correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between waist circumference and red blood cell levels (r = 0.258; p = 0.024), and hemoglobin levels (r = 0.213; p = 0.031).In conclusion, these results highlight the need to strengthen the management of obese children in order to prevent potential risk factors for cardiovascular disease in adulthood.
The aim of this study was to characterize the population frequenting Brazzaville's sports facilities and spaces, and to explore the universe of physical activities practiced and their modalities. A total of 5,492 users took part in the study, which was carried out in four districts of Brazzaville covering about half the city's surface area. Data were collected using a questionnaire based on Chifflet's work on the use of sports facilities in France. The results showed that the spatial distribution of the facilities did not provide an adequate sports offer for users, despite the population's enthusiasm for sports and the demand from a young, active clientele.
Background: Trauma is the main reason for consultation in the emergency unit. They deserve particular attention in the Congo where road accidents and violence of all kinds are increasingly observed. Methods: This study who carried out in the surgical emergencies at the University Hospital of Brazzaville, aims to analyze the epidemiological and etiological aspects, the anatomical lesions encountered; to describe their management, as well as to evaluate the induced mortality while emphasizing their place in all surgical emergencies. The prospective and analytical study included 2127 patients admitted to a traumatic emergency unit from January 1 to June 30, 2018. Medical records served as data sources. The measure of trauma severity was determined using Champion’s Trauma Score. The epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic parameters were studied. Results: The population most affected was adolescents and young adults (mean age, 27.3 years) with a male predominance: 1318 men (i.e. 61.9%) for 809 women (i.e. 38.1%). Road accidents (n = 819, or 38.5%) were the main cause of injuries, followed by violence (n = 702, or 33%) and falls (27.3%). The skull, limbs, thorax and abdomen are the main targets. The most observed lesions were limb fractures (n = 344, i.e. 16.1%), intracranial hematomas and contusions (n = 315, i.e. 14.8%), thoracic and abdominal wounds (n = 28, i.e. 1.3%). Mortality was evaluated at 0.6%, and was correlated with the severity of the lesions and the type of trauma. Conclusion: Trauma is very common in emergency consultations in Congo, with a hospital frequency of 75.1% of all emergencies. Preventive actions are essential to reduce their frequency.
Context and Objective: The nutritional and sports dimension of the lockdown implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic is unexplored in the African environment. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of COVID-19 lockdown on body composition and fitness performance in Congolese football players. Methods: This was an observational study carried out in Brazzaville between February 9 and October 30, 2020. It included 16 male players among Congolese senior national team and 11 male football players of first division Brazzaville clubs. Two types of measurements were carried out: anthropometric measures (height, body mass, total fat percent, lean body mass); physical capacities [30 m sprint, repeated sprint, aerobic endurance (Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery test), vertical jump (Squat Jump test, Countermovement test)]. The measurements were realized at 4 times: before lockdown (month of february, T0), 1st week of june (T1), 1st week of september (T2), 1st week of october (T3). Data were compared using Student t test, Sokal S test, Anova, Newman-Keuls test (multiple contrasts) and correlation analysis. Results: A significant increase in body mass (p < 0.05), body mass index (p < 0.02) was observed in all subjects, compared to a less marked increase in muscle mass. Significant reductions in performance in the 30 m sprint, the 6-sprint series, the endurance event and the vertical jumps were noted. However, a significant effect of “practice level” on the changes in performance on Squat Jump and Countermovement Jump was only found, the maximum differences throughout experimental period being found among senior football players of Congolese national team. Conclusion: The present data suggest that COVID-19 lockdown promotes weight gain and decreased physical ability in football players.
Endurance running is one of the athletic activities used in the teaching of physical education and sports in Congolese schools.However, observations of teaching practices show that this activity is not included in the other programmed activities.In this context, this article aims to identify and analyse the representations of Congolese physical education teachers, and to identify the obstacles linked to the teaching of endurance running.The results presented are based on research carried out in the three main cities of Congo-Brazzaville.In a cross-sectional survey conducted between February and December 2020, 107 randomly recruited teachers responded to a questionnaire focusing on the teaching of endurance running (professional identity and profile, characteristics of the infrastructure within the school, various pedagogical-didactic aspects of teaching practices).In addition, 10 teachers (experienced; physical education trainers) were interviewed on the basis of intensive clinical interviews.The results show the use of scattered teaching strategies in the teaching of endurance running, explained by the vagueness of their representations of "resistance running", "endurance running", "distance endurance", "duration endurance".This led the teacher to use the duration race, contrary to the institutional recommendations.Hence, it is necessary to improve the teachers' practices and to consolidate the links between the didactic, epistemological and ecological characteristics and the various components of the activity in its teaching in a disadvantaged environment.
While the deleterious effects of rapid weight loss (RWL) on the health in combat sports athletes are well known, the issue of exertion energy expenditure and motor performance remains controversial. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of RWL on energy cost and judo performance, and associated haematological characteristics. Among 21 top Congolese judoists who took part in an intensive judo program lasting 5 1/2 days (or 11 sessions), 16 of them rapidly lost 4% to 5.5% of body mass; corollarly with a reclassification in one of the 3 weight categories: -60 kg (n = 7), -80 kg (n = 5) and -100 kg (n = 4). During sessions 1 and 11, the energy cost during the different training sequences was evaluated from the heart rate (HR). During the program, a judo performance test evaluated 2 performance indicators: the number of uchi-komi achieved and the height of uke’s center of gravity during a throw. Basal blood parameters were determined before RWL and at S1, S11 (after the judo combat series). The results show a significant increase in heart rate from session S1 to session S11, in the different training sequences. HR after fights was around 98% of HRmax. In addition, a significant decrease in number of uchi-komi was observed on each of the bearings 4 to 6 and throughout the performance test, and in height of uke’s center of gravity during fall movements. While most of the basal blood parameters remained unaltered during the program, red blood cell was reduced significantly and a significant plasma volume changes increase was found. The modification of each of the variables measured thus reflects the negative effect of the rapid weight loss associated to the increase in energy cost in judo.
Background. The effects of physical exercises combined with a low-calorie diet on weight loss, body composition, lipoproteins profile, and physical fitness had been well described. However, Central Africa’s studies investigating these kinds of diets and exercise regimens are lacking. Objective. To investigate the effects of adding 14-weeks exercises to a hypocaloric diet on changes in body composition, lipoproteins concentrations, and physical capacities in obese Congolese women. Population and Methods. In total, 34 obese women aged 30 - 39 years (mean age: 33.7 ± 2.4 years) assigned to 14-weeks training program and low energy ketogenic diet. Body composition was assessed using classic methods and impedancemetry. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and fasting serum insulin were assessing using enzymatic colorimetric and radioim-munoradiometric methods. HOMA-IR and lipoproteins concentrations were assessed using standardized laboratory methods. VO2peak was measured on a treadmill during a progressive exercise test. Speed, cadence and stride length were measured along the 10-m level walkway. Muscular endurance was measured using the tests of sit-up and inflections-extensions of elbows. All the variables of the study were assessed at the beginning, in the 7-weeks, and in the 14-weeks of training methods. Results. Declines in body weight (16%), percent fat (12.1%), fat weight (26.4%), abdominal fat (34.2%), and waist circumference (10.4%) were found. A significant decrease in FPG (13%), fasting serum insulin (60.9%), HOMA-IR (64.7%), total cholesterol (12.2%), LDL-cholesterol (20.3%), triglycerides (92.8%), and VLDL-triglycerides (17.5%) was shown. In contrast, significant increase in HDL-cholesterol (27.13%) was found. The peak oxygen consumption VO2peak relative to body weight improved more in the 14-weeks training program (13.4%). Obese women exhibited higher values in the 14-weeks training program for speed gait (16.5%), cadence (9.1%), and stride length (15.7%) during normal walk and rapid walk. Weight loss combined with a low-calorie diet and 14-weeks training program improved significantly muscular endurance capacities. Conclusion. Exercise added to hypocaloric diet leads to decreases in body composition, to improve in insulin sensitivity, to enhancement of VO2peak and functional fitness. This may be helpful for the treatment of the metabolic complications of abdominal obesity.
Objective: This study aims to assess by the students of the master’s degree in physical education the quality of course content, assessment methods and adopted teaching strategies implemented by the trainers. Method: The investigation was based on a questionnaire relating to the objectives of the lessons given, the educational strategies, the methods and results of the assessments, and the supervision of the students. The response to each item of the questionnaire was assessed using a Likert descriptive-digital scale at 4 levels. Results: The formulation of the teaching objectives proved to be relevant and their achievement had been acquired at the end of the learning. Regarding the adaptability of course content, the lessons were complete and rigorous for 81.1% of the students, and the quality of work was balanced for 72.2% of them. The courses provided favored sufficient participation for 74.4% of the students, and the mode of assessment of learning was appropriate. Regarding the feeling of having developed skills, 71.1% of students held back general skills, 57.7% for transversal skills, and 56.7% for specific skills. Finally, good structural and institutional organization of teaching was satisfactory: schedule and pace of the lessons, 64.4%; hourly volume allocated to the lessons, 71.1%; material conditions, 68.9%.
Background: Home related accidents have emerged as an important public health issue in pediatrics. However, very few studies have been conducted in sub-saharan countries on domestic accidents among children. The purpose of this study was to determine the hospital frequency of domestic accidents in Brazzaville children, the type of accident, establish etiological factors and mortality. Methods: A total of 173 cases of domestic accidents were collected through a prospective study conducted from 1 January to 31 December 2017 in the pediatric intensive care unit of the University Hospital of Brazzaville. Medical records of children victims of unintentional trauma at home or in its immediate surroundings were collected. The following variables were recorded: the age and sex of the child, the hour, day and month of occurrence of the accident, parental attitudes in the management, and the prognosis (mortality). Results: Domestic accidents accounted for 9.2% of all admissions. The average age was 28.8 ± 10.5 months, a male predominance was noted (sex ratio equal to 1.6). Domestic accidents were found in 57.5% of children under two years (p 0.05). These children belong with more than 3 children in 63% of the cases. Accidents were dominated by ingestions (56.1% of cases), followed by falls (16.2%), burns (10.9%) and drug poisoning (9.2%). They often occurred between 12 pm and 8 pm, most often in the yard, the kitchen and the surroundings of the home. Three cases of death (1.53%) were enrolled including 2 cases of burns. Conclusion: domestic accidents are common in Brazzaville but their frequency is underestimated. Accidental ingestion remains the most frequent type of accident and mortality is high. Control of the causative factors is necessary to undertake effective preventive actions.
Background: Rare are the studies which treated the effect of training and successive fights of karate on haemodynamic and blood lactate concentrations responses. Objectives: To evaluate and analyze the aerobic capacity of elite Congolese karate athletes, as well as their haemodynamic and blood lactate concentrations responses changes during Ruffier test and stimulated competition. Methods: Twelve karate athletes (6 seniors and 6 juniors) took part in the study. These karate athletes were selected within the national karate teams (senior and junior) of Congo-Brazzaville. Anthropometric, bioenergetic and haemodynamic (HR, SBP, DBP) parameters and blood lactate [La] concentrations were measured at rest, immediately after the end of Ruffier test and each fight (n = 3). Results: Peak aerobic power (PAP) and maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max) values averaged 437 ± 23 watts and 57.61 ± 2.2 ml/kg/mn, values varying as function as age division (senior vs junior). The recovery index was 5.4 ± 3.4 for juniors and 6.8 ± 3.2 for seniors. SBP, HR and [La] concentrations increased significantly during fights, compared to the resting values. HRmax was 182.3 ± 1.6 bpm (89% theoretical HRmax) for seniors and 182.0 ± 13.5 bpm (86% theoretical HRmax) for juniors. Peak [La] concentrations were 10.3 ± 1.5 mmol/l for seniors and 10.8 ± 1.2 mmol/l for juniors. Conclusion: Congolese karate athletes call upon high levels of the anaerobic and aerobic capacities. The karate training program in Congo should emphasize more gold improvising lower body anaerobic power and endurance.
Le but de l’etude est d’analyser l’apport de la pratique de l’education physique sur l’appropriation de quelques concepts et notions de geometrie chez les ecoliers congolais. L’etude longitudinale et observationnelle a ete menee a Brazzaville du 9 Fevrier au 30 Mars 2018. Au total, 124 ecoliers du cours elementaire premiere annee de l’ecole primaire ont participe a l’etude. Il s’agissait de 56 garcons et 68 filles dont l’âge moyen etait de 9,5±0, 6 ans (extremes: 7-10 ans). L’experimentation comportait deux volets: 1) le suivi des lecons de mathematiques (le trace de lignes, de solides) et des lecons d’EPS (les jeux d’adresse et le cycle de vitesse); 2) l’observation des lecons et l’evaluation des performances des eleves dans les deux disciplines. La structuration des lecons d’EPS (au nombre de 5, a raison d’une lecon par semaine) etait conforme au livre-programme au cycle primaire. Les lecons de mathematiques au cours de la periode d’etude (au nombre de trois) portaient sur les activites liees a la representation des objets geometriques (lignes, cercles et cubes). Au terme du cycle d’education physique, les performances des ecoliers enquetes apres le cours d’EPS s’averaient significativement (p< 0.001) superieures a celles obtenues avant au niveau de la realisation des figures geometriques sur l’ardoise, le trace des lignes en classe, de leur identification en lignes droites, lignes brisees, lignes courbes et obliques, ainsi que de la difficulte ressentie dans le choix des lignes. De plus, l’appropriation des connaissances liees aux figures geometriques par les ecoliers etait positivement correlee avec le nombre de concepts mathematiques abordes et le travail centre sur la reconnaissance des figures et le respect des gestes associes en EPS. En somme, la pratique de l’education physique a travers ses contenus et des strategies bien specifiees concourt a mieux apprendre et assimiler chez les ecoliers les notions liees aux figures geometriques.
The aim of this study was to assess and compare blood glucose, lactate and pyruvate concentrations changes during Wingate exercise and 10 min post-exercise recovery in football players with different aerobic capacity levels. Blood glucose, lactate and pyruvate concentrations were measured in 27 amateur football players during supramaximal Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT). The subjects were divided into two groups: group1, 16 subjects with maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) values whose were higher than 60 ml/kg/min; group 2, 11 subjects with VO2max values lower than 55 ml/kg/min. All subjects performed WAnT after determining the VO2max using an incremental test. The WAnT was performed on an Ergomedic cycle ergometer. Blood samples were collected at rest, at the stop of WAnT and during the 10 minutes’ recovery (following WAnT). Only slight and no significant decrease was observed during WAnT for blood glucose: 5.5±0.3 mmol/L vs 4.9±0.3 mmol/L, group 2. Very large increases in lactate and pyruvates concentrations were found at the WAnT stop: 12.41±0.15 mmol/L vs 1.57±0.14 mmol/L for group 1, 13.87±0.12 mmol/L vs 1.84±0.25 mmol/L for group 2. The peaks of [La] were observed at 2 min post-exercise WAnT: 12.83±0.23 mmol/L and 14.59±0.32 mmol/L respectively. The same trend was observed for pyruvate concentrations. Blood [La] concentrations measured during 2 min to 10 min recovery decreased significantly, and were significantly and negatively correlated with VO2maw. This study clearly confirm that a brief and supramaximal Wingate exercise induced higher lactate and pyruvates concentrations increase in football players with high VO2max level than others with low VO2max level. The major responsible factor is glycolytic capacity.
This study identifies and analyzes the different expressions of violence during physical education courses among a school population, and the pedagogical strategies of teachers to reduce violence in Brazzaville, Congo. Based on a survey of students of high schools from disadvantaged environment and teachers, a cross-sectional and analytical survey was carried out from January to April 2019. The activity "volleyball" was taught to the students during the survey. Two questionnaires were used as data collection tools in the research. The instruments were developed by the researcher. Arithmetic mean, standard deviation, normality test, student’s test and analysis of variance were used for data analysis. The students explain the reasons for violence during physical education courses in three major trends: symbolic violence (devaluing appreciation and unjustified repetitive sanctions by teachers), physical violence (particularly unbalanced timetables), and incivility acts and verbal abuses. To palliate this violence, teachers use several socio-didactic strategies. The results of the study show the need to promote remediate strategies for reducing violence in physical education. The aim of the study was to identify and analyze the motor behaviors of practitioners of the traditional Congolese Ekienga activity, and to offer teaching content for this activity at primary school level in the context of physical education. The research, observational and didactic, was based on the one hand on the evaluation of the bodily gestures carried out during Ekienga in 34 adult men, and on the other hand the construction of teaching programs. The results obtained showed that Ekienga’s internal logic allows the construction of knowledge and relevant teaching content in physical education at primary school in Congo.
Le but de l’etude est d’evaluer les effets benefices du programme de la pratique de l’activite physique gymnique aerobic sur la composition corporelle des femmes menopausees au regard des facteurs de risques de l’obesite et des maladies cardiovasculaires. L’enquete a ete menee a Brazzaville sur les femmes âgees de 31 a 59 ans representant 35% de la population active du Congo (CNSEE, 2015). Un echantillon de 94 femmes obeses et en surpoids, pre et post menopausees a ete reparti en deux groupes: 58 femmes post-menopausees (cas) et 36 femmes pre-menopausees (temoins). Ces femmes ont ete soumises a un programme d’entrainement de condition physique de trois seances hebdomadaires durant 24 semaines, base sur les exercices de gymnastique aerobic et rythmique, suivi d’une marche active de 90 minutes a une intensite moderee. L’obesite a ete appreciee a partir des courbes de corpulence de Rolland- Cachera et al. (1991). Le questionnaire administre aux enquetees a permis de repertorier leurs connaissances sur la maladie, d’identifier le role devolu a l’activite physique dans la prise en charge des maladies chroniques non transmissibles. Nos resultats ont montre une adhesion au programme qui s’avere tres significative a 80%. Les femmes menopausees ont perdu du poids, la masse grasse, ont reduit leur indice de masse corporelle, leur tour de taille et leur condition physique a ete ameliore (p< 0,001). Ainsi, ce programme a contribue a la reduction des inegalites d’acces a la pratique d’activite physique gymnique aerobic et a l’etat de sante des femmes congolaises menopausees obeses.
The aim of this study was to find the reasons why football isn’t taught in the general and technical schools of Brazzaville, Congo. A cross-sectional survey, conducted throughout Brazzaville (Congo), targeted at a representative sample of 50 teachers aged 35 to 49 years. These subjects were teaching physical education in high schools. Our investigation, undertaken from February 2018 to April 2018, was based on of a questionnaire administered to the teachers of physical education evolving in the high schools of Brazzaville that was articulated around their representation on it put on football in physical education. The results indicate that the reason that football isn’t taught is attributable to the lack of initiative and creativity shown by the teaching of the physical education in high schools in Brazzaville. Our data show the importance of problems associated to football learning among Congolese teachers of physical education.
Genital peritonitis is rare in daily surgical practice in Congo-Brazzaville. Clandestine abortions are incriminated. The purpose of the study is to analyze the epidemiological, etiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of genital peritonitis. A retrospective and case series study was realized in departments of Digestive Surgery and Gynecology-Obstetrics of the University Hospital of Brazzaville. The inclusion criteria for the diagnosis of peritonitis were abdominal pain, fever, transit disturbances and signs of peritoneal irritation. The parameters studied were: age, etiological circumstances, anatomical lesions, type of surgical treatment and evolution. During the study period (July 1, 2015-December 31, 2017), 306 patients were admitted to both departments for acute generalized peritonitis. Among them, a genital cause was incriminated in 18 (5.9%) patients. The mean age was 27.6 ± 3.1 years. At the parity and gestational level, 93% of patients had at least two pregnancies, but not more than the second trimester. In addition, 50% of the patients had an induced miscarriage, due to uterine and intestinal lesions. Induced miscarriages accounted for half of etiological circumstances. Physical examination of the abdomen revealed abdominal contracture in 61.1% of cases. Main visceral lesions were uterine perforation (55.5%) followed by rupture of tubo-ovarian abscess (38.9%). The operative follow-up was simple in 83.33% of cases. In conclusion, genital peritonitis remains unfrequented. Median laparotomy has been the main therapeutic approach in our context where emergency laparoscopic surgery is not yet common.
