PurposeThe current work builds on the dual process theory of habituation and sensitization to empirically investigate theory-based mechanisms through which social media use habit influences continued social media use intentions in the context of problematic social media use (SMU).Design/methodology/approachWe build on the dual process theory of habituation and sensitization and test our model with structural equation modeling technique applied to survey-based data collected from 337 social media users.FindingsFindings suggest that SMU Habit may increase user's perceived Habituation and directly reduce user's experienced SMU related Exhaustion. Furthermore, Habituation and SMU related Exhaustion are negatively associated in a nonlinear fashion. Also, SMU Habit may promote higher level of SMU Dependency through Sensitization. Increased level of SMU Dependency is associated with increased level of SMU related Exhaustion. Thus, SMU Habit simultaneously shapes two opposing forces driving continued use decisions.Practical implicationsThe current work can serve as a basis for developing effective interventions especially given the increase in problematic uses of IS fostered by the development of technology use habits.Originality/valueAlthough separate strands of research independently examined the role of “pull” forces such as SMU dependency and the role of “push” forces such as SMU related Exhaustion in influencing users' inclination toward future SMU, a unified theoretical framework considering the triad of SMU Habit, “pull” and “push” forces together is yet to be offered. Deploying Habituation–Sensitization theory will shed new light on dual mechanisms through which habit drives continued use decisions in SMU context. Thus, the current work can serve as a basis for developing effective interventions given the increase in problematic uses of IS.
The purpose of this study is to conduct a conceptual replication of the model developed by Agarwal and Karahanna (2000) in the context of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) simulation. The model was tested using data collected from 251 students learning ERP in a simulated computer-based training environment. In general, results are consistent with the original study, where cognitive absorption positively influences perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Nonetheless, there were some notable differences. Unlike the original study, this replication study found that the cognitive absorption had no direct impact on perceived usefulness, but the effect was indirect via perceived ease of use underscoring the uniqueness of computer-based training environment. Further, perceived usefulness had no significant impact on use intention. Moreover, we found a significant positive relationship between perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. The study controlled for age, gender, previous ERP experience, and business process experience.
Researchers and practitioners have started understanding that the use of Information technologies (IT) can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they provide benefits to individuals, organizations and societies. On the other, technologies can produce adverse and often unexpected consequences for individuals, organizations and societies. Much research has been devoted to the possible positive aspects of technologies, such as increased productivity and performance. Only in recent years we start seeing systematic research on possible negative aspects and consequences of technology use, dubbed as the "dark side" of IT use. This mini-track aims at expanding this line of work and helping researchers and practitioners to better understand, and possibly tackle, the "dark side" of IT use.
Information Technology (IT) continued use decisions are typically assumed to be based on the results of a rational evaluation of the users' IT use experience, yet, recent findings suggest that continued use decisions might not be purely rational. In the current work, we build on the expectation-confirmation theory as well as cognitive dissonance theory to investigate possible mechanisms driving the continued use decisions of mobile phones. As an attempt to extend the existing paradigm in the IT continuance literature beyond rational decision making, we theorize three possible alternative mechanisms that might drive IT continued use decisions, namely psychological states (i.e., a cognitive and affective states of mind), reasoned action, and affective response. According to cognitive dissonance theory, human beings tend to reduce experienced cognitive dissonance by assimilating their post-behavior perceptions toward their prior expectations. As a result, in the context of IT continued use, we argue that experiencing psychological states such as technology addiction and excessive technostress might bias users' evaluations of their IT use experience, which in turn influence their post-use perceptions on the cognitive and affective levels, and consequently will influence the users' continued use decisions. A partial least squares analysis of 436 responses was used to validate and test our model. The study results generally support our model. The theoretical and practical implications of our study are discussed.
The current study aims to distinguish between two perspectives dominating the mobile phone addiction literature; addiction to a mobile phone and addiction through a mobile phone (i.e. addiction to mobile phone application). We extend state-of-the-art addiction literature by building on dual-systems theory and investigating both perspectives in the same theoretical model. We empirically test our model (n=333) and results provide support for all of the hypothesized relationships. Results indicate that addiction to mobile phones can't be fully explained by addiction to mobile phone applications. Theoretical and practical contributions of the study is discussed.
Social media platforms serve as important tools for diffusing knowledge within organizations. The factors affecting knowledge diffusion through social media networks (SMNs) need to therefore be better understood. Accordingly, this paper focuses on two SMN‐specific characteristics – reputation mechanisms and the distribution of knowledge roles – which are argued to enhance and enable, respectively, the smooth transfer of knowledge in a SMN. To examine their effects, we distinguish between two types of reputation mechanisms – adaptive and objective – and across three distinct knowledge roles in SMNs: seekers, contributors and brokers. We argue that the extent of knowledge diffusion in the SMN depends on the type of mechanism and the relative distribution of these three roles. Using data collected through an agent‐based simulation, we find that (a) the distribution of knowledge roles affects knowledge diffusion, with distributions consisted of more brokers outperforming others and (b) objective reputation mechanisms outperform adaptive mechanisms. Furthermore, we find that reputation mechanisms and distribution of knowledge roles interact to influence knowledge diffusion. The study's implications for future research and practice are discussed in the light of its limitations. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd
AbstractInformation technology use is typically assumed to have positive effects for users, yet information technology use may also lead to negative consequences with various degrees of gravity. In the current work, we build on dual-systems theories to investigate negative consequences associated with mobile phones use MPU, defined as the extent to which the use of mobile phones is perceived to create problems in managing one's personal and social life. According to dual-system theories, human behaviour is guided by two systems: reflexive automatic and reflective control, which most of the time work in harmony. But when the two systems come into conflict, they will both complete to exert their influences over behaviour. Thus, we view the negative consequences associated with MPU as an outcome of the tug-of-war between the two systems influencing our day-to-day behaviours, where reflexive system is represented in our study by MPU habits and reflective system is represented by self-regulation. We hypothesise that the influence of habit and self-regulation on these negative consequences will be mediated through MPU. A partial least square analysis of 266 responses was used to validate and test our model. The study results generally support our model. The theoretical and practical implications of our study are discussed.
Research geared toward technology use to promote health-related behaviors has been rapidly expanding, yet evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed interventions is inconclusive. The proposed study builds on self-regulation theory, persuasive system design model, and task-technology fit model to propose design guidelines essential for translating intentions to engage in a desired health-related behavior into actual behavior. The current study proposes that mobile applications will have stronger potential to support their users in executing users' intended health-related behaviors if the applications are designed to (i) monitor and provide feedback to users about the discrepancy between their current and desired levels of behavior, (ii) encourage users to change their behavior, and facilitate the selection of strategies needed to execute the targeted changes, and (iii) ease the execution of selected strategies. The potential implications of the proposed guidelines for practice and research will be discussed.
Peertopeer (P2P) designs of knowledge management systems have been extensively utilized by organizations to facilitate knowledge diffusion. The dominant simulationbased research in this area usually assumes that knowledge seeking and sharing happen homogeneously such that: a) individuals ask question as soon as they lack knowledge, b) individuals from whom knowledge is sought answer if they have required knowledge, and c) these rules applies to all individuals in the focal knowledge community. This study, relying on selfefficacy theory, relaxe s these assumptions and investigates knowledge diffusion under different knowledge selfefficacy distributio ns. We also examine the interacting effect of knowledge selfefficacy distribution and reputation signals ( as a previously emphasized structural feature of P2P networks). Generally, results of this study indicate that P2P communities that have higher proportion of individuals with moderatelevel knowledge selfef ficacy exhibit a greater amount of knowledge diffusion. However, this effect is attenuated in conditions where inferior reputation mechanisms are used.
Excessive mobile phone use has gained attention in the media recently, where it has been associated with driving fatalities and productivity decrements as well as social embarrassment. To provide successful interventions, there is a need to understand why some mobile phone owners can't resist the urge to use their devices. Much prior research has investigated excessive use through the perspective of technology addiction. In the current study we digress from that perspective, and investigate deficient self-regulation as a possible lens to explain excessive mobile phone use and its associated negative consequences. Surveys were used for data collection (n=266). A Partial Least Squares analysis of Anxiety, Boredom, Deficient Self-Regulation, Habit and Mobile phone use (MPU) combined to explain Negative Consequences associated with MPU with 62.8% variance explained. The findings provide evidence on the role of deficient self-regulation in excessive MPU and provide useful insights about appropriate interventions.
Recent attention to dangerous mobile phone use (MPU) has drawn concerns on how we can reduce use in situations such as driving. The National Safety Council estimates 1.6 million, roughly 28%, of vehicle accidents a year are related to MPU while driving. Much of the research has investigated dangerous use through an addiction perspective; however, if the underlying motivation is more similar to obsessive compulsive checking then the resulting interventions may be different. We investigate the dangerous and compulsive MPU through the lens of obsessive compulsive checkers by examining responsibility and compulsive checking on dangerous MPU. We test and support our model with a PLS analysis of 432 respondents. Findings provide evidence of an emerging perspective of MPU as well as insights into the recent lack of success in legislation to reduce dangerous MPU while driving.
