Geometric quality assurance plays a key role in the competitiveness of manufacturing companies. Besides the inspection of sheet metal parts with sufficient accuracy, aspects such as automation, measuring speed, reduction of manual tasks, and the required know-how are also considered important factors when investing in new systems. Based on existing approaches, we introduce a methodology adapted for the assessment of the technological and economic potential of measurement systems. By means of an empirical expert study, we collected a database for determining and comparing the potential of four different measurement systems: a coordinate measuring machine, two robot-based optical inspection systems with a photogrammetry-based approach and one with a laser tracker, as well as a measurement concept suggesting the application of region-specific reference projections and subsequent data-driven registration. This paper presents the results of the potential analysis as well as the assessment of experts regarding the proposed measurement concept.
Due to globalization, shortened innovation cycles and resource scarcity, manufacturing companies operate in an increasingly dynamic environment. In order to meet the resulting challenges, it is of great importance for producing companies to integrate and utilize the most efficient technologies to produce competitive products. Constant technological change requires continuous adaptation and proactive strategic technology management. To presciently tackle these changes, it is essential to identify technological demands at an early stage and derive future technological requirements. This work aims to establish a framework to identify and structure external influencing factors, which lead to strategic technological demands in manufacturing.
Managing innovation cycles in manufacturing is a key challenge within a volatile business environment characterized by product diversity, individualization, digitalization, interdisciplinary teams and emerging technologies. Shorter product and technology life cycles demand proactive innovation and high efficiency of existing manufacturing technologies at once. A great range of approaches, models, and tools is available in scientific literature, yet managing innovation cycles in manufacturing is associated with great effort, willingness to take risks, strategic vision, and operational capabilities. This paper defines a framework for cyclic innovation management in manufacturing systems in order to enable manufacturing companies to manage technological innovation with ambidexterity.
This manuscript analyzes different scenarios to estimate the manufacturing cost for small-scale and mass production of all-solid-state batteries.
Strategic technology planning is a key challenge for manufacturing companies in order to stay innovative and succeed in the dynamic international competition. State of the art approaches are mostly based on technology evaluations that focus on present technology readiness and maturity or qualitative potential assessments. These approaches lack of a quantitative consideration of future development potentials of new or immature technologies. The presented approach includes technology potentials in the strategic technology planning and therefore introduces a concept for the quantitative and comparable evaluation of technology potentials. Based on this evaluation, a technology roadmap can be developed to support strategic technology planning.
