The oilseeds crop occupies an important position in agriculture economy in the world. A wide range of oilseed crops is produced in different agro-climatic regions of the country. Insects-pests are one of the limiting factors in the production of oilseed crops. The insect reproduce partheno-genetically, the females give birth to average 26-133 nymphs. In favourable conditions they grow very fast and are full-fed in 7-10 days. The honeydew excreted by the aphids provides congenial conditions for the growth to development of sooty mould on the plant. In case of severe infestation the crop yield may be reduced up to 80 per cent. Mustard sawfly is a major pest of cole crops but it affects almost all cruciferous plants, including rape and mustard. Eggs are laid singly, mostly during day time and inserted into leaf tissues with the help of saw like ovipositor. On hatching the grubs nibble the margins of tender leaves but later on bite holes in the leaves.
A large number of insect pests are associated with stored grains which are directly related to geographical and climatic conditions. Rusty grain beetles, weevils, and lesser grain borer all develop initially inside the kernel. The spread and distribution of stored product pests are facilitated by movement of grains from one area to another and by flight of insect pests as some of the adult insects are strong fliers. Secondary pests generally feed on grain that is going out of condition or damaged. Damaged grain kernels have exposed endosperm that is accessible food for stored grain pest and fungi. White shouldered-house moth, brown house moth, almond moth, mediterranean flour moth, Indian meal moth, meal moth, european grain moth, clothes moths. Integrated Pest Management involves understanding interactions between stored product environment and insects associated with stored products, and replacing all or most of the chemical applications with cost-effective non-chemical alternatives.
The experiment was carried out during winter (rabi) season of 2016–17 and 2017–18 with 18 treatments comprising of inorganic fertilizers, biofertilizers and manures to compare the coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) seed quality. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replications. Results revealed that the co-inoculation of Azotobacter and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) along with recommended dose of nitrogen through vermicompost (T5) recorded significantly higher test weight, standard germination, seedling length, seedling dry weight, vigour index-I, vigour index-II, dehydrogenase activity, superoxidase dismutase, field emergence index and seedling establishment. The electrical conductivity was also recorded less in this treatment. The same treatment recorded significantly higher standard germination (31.50%), seedling length (14.09 cm), seedling dry weight (1.88 mg), vigour index-I (444), vigour index-II (59.25) and minimum electrical conductivity (696.92 μ S cm-1 g-1) after accelerated ageing of seed for 120 h at 40±1°C at 100% relative humidity. Suitable combination of organic manures and biofertilizers can be used to produce good quality coriander sees.
The laboratory and screen house experiment was conducted to study the biology and behavior of Scirpophaga fusciflua Hampson (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) during kharif 2015. The female moth oviposited both on dorsal and ventral surfaces of the leaf. The eggs were laid in masses and covered with brownish hairs of anal tuft. The eggs were hatched in 5-7 days with an average of 5.25±0.09 days. The maximum eggs hatched on 5th day (93.62%) with 92.31% egg hatchability. The females laid eggs in the night between 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm during the study. The insect has five larval instars. The pupal period lasted for 7-9 days and the adults emerged out from the pupae at night between 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm during dusk hours. Adults exhibited sexual dimorphism. The number of eggs per female ranged from 64-212 with an average of 138.60±15.67 eggs. The longevity of male and female ranged from 2-3 days in male and 2-4 days in female, respectively. The morphometrics of different development stages are also discussed. This study is the first to describe the biology S. fusciflua in India.
The study was conducted with two planting methods at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Rice Research Station, Kaul during 2014 and 2015. The spiders appeared early in direct seeding because of early establishment of crop as well higher population in direct seeding. The population density of mirid bugs ranged from 0.58 to 3.34 and 0.36 to 3.48/hill during 2014 while 0.64 to 2.80 and 0.36 to 2.02/hill during 2015 in direct seeding and transplanting crop. The overall population of spiders and mirid bugs was significantly higher in direct seeding rice.
The study was conducted in direct seeded and transplanted rice at at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Rice Research Station, Kaul during 2014 and 2015 with objective to study the effect of crop establishment methods on incidence of insect pest. The pooled data on incidence of foliage feeders revealed less than one per cent damage in direct seeding and transplanting rice throughout the season during both the years and did not differ significantly. The population of Rice gundhi bug, Leptocorisa acuta varied from 0.08 to 0.16/ hill in direct seeding and 0.10 to 0.12/ hill in transplanted in different weeks during 2014. The population count ranged from 0.14 to 0.22/ hill and 0.10 to 0.16/ hill in direct seeding and transplanting during 2015. The population difference in two methods of study was found non-significant during both the seasons. The population of Leptocorisa acuta with biotic and abiotic factor had non-significant association during both the years.
The objective of study was to examine the population of WBPH and its natural enemies under agro-climatic condition of Haryana, India during Kharif-2012. The WBPH population varied from 0.4 to 403.4/10 hills and 4.6 to 224.4/10 hills during 2011 and 2012, respectively. The maximum population was recorded 38th week during both the years. The population started declining from 39th week and was negligible by the end of October i.e. 42nd and 43rd week during 2011 and 2012, respectively. The population of spiders (39.2/10 hills) and mirid bugs (64.2/10 hills) was maximum in 39th SMW during 2011while in 2012 the population of spiders was maximum (23.6/10 hills) in 37th SMW and that of mirid bugs 66.8 /10 hills in 40th SMW. The correlation of WBPH with abiotic and biotic factors did not show any significant relationship.
Green gram varieties viz. MH-421 and SML-668 were graded using various sieves on seed cleaner cum grader in order to find out the optimum sieve size for maximum seed recovery and quality seed. The seed retained over each sieve were collected separately and tested for seed quality parameters in the seed testing laboratory. The results revealed that 2.4 mm sieve size was found effective and economical for grading MH421 for maximum seed recovery (72.1%) with better seed quality i.e. germination (76%), which meets IMSCS while the sieve of 3.00 mm size was found effective and economical for grading SML-668 for maximum seed recovery (75.2%) with better seed quality i.e. germination (80%). The results also revealed that the recovery (%) increased with decrease in sieve size while the seed quality parameters increased with increase in sieve size.
