: This document reviews proposed alternative strategies and implementation architectures for the integration of three DoD software repositories: the Interim IDEF repository for process reengineering, the Defense Data Dictionary System (DDDS) repository for standard data elements, and the Defense Software Reuse system (DSRS) repository for software components. Due to the lack of obtainable information about user requirements, the sponsor asked IDA to make general assumptions; consequently, an evaluation method and model were developed to evaluate alternative combinations of strategy and implementation architectures. The model served as the basis for recommending the re-use integration strategy with a Hypertext Markup Language database implementation architecture.The benefits of this implementation include providing a relatively fast implementation of the integrated repositories and support for a graceful evolution toward actual integration. A plan for a three-phase implementation approach is also given for the evolution to the new user interface and implementation architectures.
: This study reports on a programming language survey commissioned by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for C3I to determine how many programming languages are being used in the DoD today as compared to 20 years ago when the DoD began development of the Ada language. The sample population for this survey consisted of weapons systems taken from the 1994 Presidential Budget requests for RDT&E programs exceeding $15 million and Procurement budgets exceeding $25 million. The current DoD list of major Automated Information Systems was used as the survey sample for non-weapons systems. The survey found that over 80% of the applications in the sample were written in third generation languages. Moreover, it identified 37 third generation languages in contrast to an estimate of at least 450 general purpose languages and dialects in 1974. In weapons systems modernization, Ada is the most commonly used language.
: The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) Document D-568, Ada Compiler Validation Procedures, is a revision of the Ada Validation Procedures and Guidelines, version 1.1 issued by the Ada Joint Program Office (AJPO) in January 1987. A principal objective of the revision was to update the Procedures and Guidelines to reflect the current validation practice and to improve the rules of procedure and management so as to reduce the burden of validation on the certification body and its customers. IDA solicited comments from the Ada Validation Facility (AVF) managers on version 1.1, drafted a first revision for further comments, and produced this final version as a deliverable to the AJPO. This version reflects the current policy of the Department of Defense and other national certification systems (e.g., U.S. Department of Commerce), as well as the collective operational experience of the Ada certification body.
: This report is intended for use by the Ada Joint Program office staff concerned with providing guidance to the DoD Program Managers on the use of (Validation Summary Report) VSRs as an information resource. The results of the formal validation of Ada compilers are documented in VSRs which are available through the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) to the public. The format and content of the VSR has been revised periodically to improve the presentation of data and to add substantive information concerning the testing procedures, configurations tested and testing results. The VSR is reviewed as a source of information on the capability of compilers that could be useful to a prospective buyer and user of an Ada computer language. : IDA Memorandum Report M-361 contains the source code for the demonstration software which implements the specification found in IDA memorandum Report M-360, Level 1 Ada/SQL Database Language Interface User's Guide. M-361 will be used to provide the actual means of accessing the relational database UNIFY with the Ada language. This software demonstrates an interface between Ada and the database language SQL as implemented by the UNIFY database package. An interface between Ada application programs and the UNIFY database was identified as a necessary capability which must be demonstrated to show that Ada applications can be integrated with the DLA operational environment. This interface implements a subset of the ANSI SQL standard which reflects the current implementation of SQL by the UNIFY. However, this software can be easily upgraded to support an ANSI implementation of SQL when it is acquired by the DLA.
