Cyber-physical-social systems (CPSS) are a research topic receiving increasing attention due to the set of domains covered, the nature of the relationships between these domains and, therefore, the features of the emergent whole. There are many published surveys on the quality of CPSS constituents; however, the quality of the whole CPSS is still an open question. The purpose of this work is to identify the specific and most common quality characteristics of CPSS and to analyse their coverage by ISO/IEC 25010 and ISO/IEC 25019 standards. A systematic literature review was carried out to answer the research questions. The results of analysis showed that 1) CPSS quality characteristics are broadly aligned with established software quality standards, although this consistency is often implicit; 2) the socio-economic aspect and quality-in-use are reflected in quality characteristics to a very minimal extent; 3) CPSS qualities, which are compositions of quality characteristics describing different domains of CPSS, are an essential issue for further research.
Abstract This paper is dedicated to the optimization of the beam shape of a piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) for maximum efficiency at the second eigenfrequency. A combination of mathematical modeling and experimental investigation is used to design and confirm an optimal shape for the cantilever, maximizing strain in the upper layers of the active element. The cantilever beam shape is nonlinear throughout the cross-section of it. The experimental results confirm that the optimal shape beam produces around 70% higher output power than the initial shape. The findings of this study can be used to guide the design of more efficient PEHs for a variety of applications.

This paper aims to assess the contemporary relevance of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) in the context of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0.The purpose is to investigate whether BPMS remains pertinent in the face of increasingly complex and diverse business processes, considering the overlapping functionalities with ERP systems.Design/methodology/approach: This discussion paper employs a systematic theoretical literature review approach.The methodology integrates insights from existing research, conducting comprehensive searches across reputable academic databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar.Keyword searches yielded over 500 results, which were refined to 203 relevant articles through prioritizing peer-reviewed sources.The synthesis of literature includes an analysis of historical evolution and a comparative study of critical success factors, forming the basis for deriving potential future trajectories for these interconnected system classes, and emphasizing their strategic alignment.Findings: This discussion paper presents an overview of the current state and future development trajectory of the two critical information systems (IS) classes for modern organizational management-ERP and BPMS-and compares the critical success factors (CSFs) associated with each system class.Based on this comparison, the paper determines the development direction of both system classes concerning business requirements.Originality/value: Unlike prior literature which has examined ERP and BPMS systems individually, this study provides original perspectives by conducting a direct comparative analysis of the critical success factors for each system class.The comparative CSF analysis approach enables this study to contribute unique insights into the status and future trajectory of ERP and BPMS systems.
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and Business Process Management Suites (BPMS) are implemented in the organization to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and increase profits. In the case of the implementation of traditionally managed business processes, the scopes of operation of both classes of systems overlap. ERP systems allow for the standardization and improvement of the implementation of repetitive, standardized business processes, and BPMS enables the identification, redesigning, implementation, and monitoring of processes execution. But does the latter still have an application in Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0, where processes are more complex and diverse? This discussion paper provides an overview of the current state and the direction of development of two classes of information systems (IS) crucial for the management of modern organizations – ERP and BPMS – and compares the critical success factors (CSFs) of both system classes. Based on this comparison, the direction of development of both classes of systems from the point of view of business requirements is determined.
The aim of the article is to identify drivers and limiters of the development of Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) from the point of view of the industry and the academia, and to formulate practical recommendations. Their identification is crucial in order to remove a considerable gap between the approach to knowledge-intensive business processes (kiBPs), which require dynamic management and are decisive with regard to the competitive position of the organization under the conditions of Industry 5.0, as well as the possibilities offered by ICT solution, and the current possibilities and needs of BPM practitioners. The authors applied a methodological approach based on a theoretical literature review and a review of practice through online structured expert interviews with key BPMS solution providers. According to the literature, the main drivers pertain to the enterprises’ efforts to reduce costs and improve their productivity and efficiency, develop technology, and enact changes in business models and business processes. According to vendors, the main drivers for the combination of BPMS and Case Management Systems (CMS) were the users’ expectations, technology identity, and further development perspectives. The main limiters of the decision to combine both classes of systems were technological problems predicted by vendors related to the unification of historically different technologies used in both classes of systems, as well as implementation-based problems related to the likely need to reconfigure the software environments of software users. The article formulated original recommendations for both vendors and users of iBPMS software, including the basic recommendation of the selection of the methodology of implementation of BPM and iBPMS in accordance with the context of the organization’s operations (the nature of its business processes).
The 30th issue of CSIMQ includes four articles that cover research problems in the field of digital business systems. Two of the selected articles are systematic literature reviews, while the other two provide methodological additions to the theory. Systematic literature reviews focus on conceptual modeling for the digital business ecosystems development life cycle and on deep learning methods for retail sales forecasting. The other two articles discuss the methodological and technological aspects of the developing digital models of cyber-physical systems and of the solving heat loss calculation problem.
Organizations operating in Industry 4.0 and 5.0 use both ERP and BPMS systems. As recently as 10–15 years ago, the reasons behind using these two classes of systems were different. ERPs were used to manage the organization's resources, and BPMS – to support the implementation of business processes, often understood as work or document flows. However, as a result of digital transformation, both business needs as well as ERP and BPMS vendors responding thereto made these two classes of systems overlap to an increasing degree. Thus, the aim of this article is to answer the question: Are we heading towards process-based ERP systems or is the future in the flexible, open integration of postmodernERP and iBPMS? The authors conducted a narrative literature review and content analysis of 88 ERP systems offered on the Polish market. As a result, 11 ERP systems containing functionalities specific to BPMS were identified. Further, to define the essence of the transformation of ERP into process-based ERP systems, 5 expert interviews were conducted, which allowed for the formulation of two approaches to this transformation: the integration of ERP systems with iBPMS as an external subsystem taking over the implementation of selected business processes based on metadata and data of the ERP system; or process management within the ERP system by enabling the configuration of selected processes in ERP subsystems or modules based on a repository of process models, e.g. in BPMN.
One of the results of the evolution of business process management (BPM) is the development of information technology (IT), methodologies and software tools to manage all types of processes – from traditional, structured processes to unstructured processes, for which it is not possible to define a detailed flow as a sequence of tasks to be performed before implementation. The purpose of the article is to present the evolution of intelligent BPM systems (iBPMS) and dynamic case management/adaptive case management systems (DCMS/ACMS) and show that they converge into one class of systems, additionally absorbing new emerging technologies such as process mining, robotic process automation (RPA), or machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI). The content of research reports on iBPMS and DCMS systems by Gartner and Forrester consulting companies from the last 10 years was analysed. The nature of this study is descriptive and based solely on information from secondary data sources. It is an argumentative paper, and the study serves as the arguments that relate to the main research questions. The research results reveal that under business pressure, the evolution of both classes of systems (iBPMS and DCMS/ACMS) tends to cover the functionality of the same area of requirements by enabling the support of processes of different nature. This de facto means the creation of one class of systems, although for marketing reasons, some vendors will still offer separate products for some time to come. The article shows that the main driver of unified software system development is not the new possibilities offered by IT, but the requirements imposed on BPM by the increasingly stronger impact of knowledge management (KM) with regard to the way business processes are executed. Hence the anticipation of the further evolution of methodologies and BPM supporting systems towards integration with KM and elements of knowledge management systems (KMS). This article presents an original view on the features and development trends of software systems supporting BPM as a consequence of knowledge economy (KE) requirements in accordance with the concept of dynamic BPM.

Mechanoreceptors of the insect play a vital role for the insect to sense and monitor the environmental parameters, like flow, tactile pressure, etc. This paper presents the studies made on the morphology of the mechanoreceptor of the insect Blattella asahinai (scientific name of cockroach) that is a hair-like structure known as trichoid sensilla, by scanning electron microscope and confocal laser microscope. The scanned images show the details of sensilla components in which the hair is embedded in the sockets, which are connected with the cuticle and joint membrane, where the dendrite touches at the base of the hair passing through the cuticle layers. The images also show that the tubular bodies and microtubules are tightly compacted inside the dendrite. This paper presents the details of how the sensilla work when an external stimulus act on them. The hair deflects with the disturbance of the cuticle and joint membrane, and this deformed hair leans on the dendrite, which is attached at the base of the hair that in turn presses the tubular bodies and microtubules, which develop negative ions passing down through the dendrite to the neuron, which provides information as an electric signal to the brain of the insect so that it responds for necessary action. Based on the morphological studies, sensing mechanism, material properties of the components, and design principles will be evolved for the development of an artificial bio-inspired sensor. A solid works model of the sensilla is also presented.

Nowadays business information systems are thought of as decision-oriented systems supported by different types of subsystems. Multidimensional data visualization is an essential part of such systems. As datasets tend to be increasingly large, more effective ways are required to display, analyze and interpret information they contain. Most of the classical visualization methods are unsuitable for large datasets. This paper focuses on the artificial neural networks-based methods for visualization of big multidimensional datasets; namely, on the approaches for the faster obtaining of visual results. The new strategy, which is identified by the decreased number of cycles of data reviews (passes of training data) up to the only one, when training neural networks, is proposed. To test this strategy, the results of experiments, using two unsupervised learning methods on benchmark data, are briefly presented.
Business information systems nowadays should be thought of first of all as the decision-oriented systems supported by different types of subsystems. Multidimensional data visualization is an essential constituent of such systems, especially in the age of growing amounts of data to be interpreted and analyzed. As managers are faced with a federated environment and need to make timecritical decisions, data should be presented in a meaningful manner and easily understandable form. It is required more effective ways to cope with this situation. One of them is the visual presentation of complex data for human decisions. The paper focuses on the neural networks-based methods for visualization of big multidimensional datasets. The new strategy – to decrease the number of cycles of data reviews (passes of training data) up to the only one when training neural networks is proposed. The results of experiment on benchmark data to test this strategy are presented.
The paper summarizes the results of research on the modeling and implementation of ad- vanced planning and scheduling (APS) systems done in recent twenty years. It discusses the concept of APS system - how it is thought of today - and highlights the modeling and implementation chal- lenges with which the developers of such systems should cope. Some from these challenges were identified as a result of the study of scientific literature, others - through an in-depth analysis of the experience gained during the development of real-world APS system - a Production Efficiency Navigator (PEN system). The paper contributes to APS systems theory by proposing the concept of an ensemble of collaborating algorithms.
Service-oriented systems engineering (SoSE) counts its two-decade history. Nowadays it is a way of developing and deploying applications as well as the whole enterprise systems. Service-oriented requirements engineering (SoRE) as an integral part of SoSE and as a new requirements engineering subdiscipline faces a number of different kinds of challenges. The early SoRE approaches were derived from the initial phases of traditional software development methodologies, and the later ones are original, taking into account the specific characteristics of service-oriented systems. This paper discusses the specifics of service-oriented systems, describes the paradigm related SoRE issues and provides an overview of the characteristics of service-oriented enterprise systems. All these specifics and issues entail different methodological approaches to SoRE. The special attention is given to requirements negotiation activity. The paper presents a view-based approach to derive the balanced service quality requirements from an initial set of stakeholders’ needs.
