The Mössbauer spectrum of C7FeCl3 has been reexamined at room temperature and is in good agreement with previous studies. The spectrum at 4·2 K of the intercalate shows no sign of magnetic ordering which is observed below 15 K for FeCl3. Reaction of graphite-ferric chloride with potassium results in the production of graphite-FeCl2 intercalates and eventually the total conversion of ferric ions to bulk α-Fe.
Good agreement is shown to exist between the theoretically computed (modified extended Hückel) and the experimentally determined (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) density-of-states for graphite monofluoride.
The insertion of certain aromatic or aliphatic Lewis bases between every sheet of the metal dichalcogenides NbSe2 and TaS2 is directly revealed by high resolution electron microscopy. The interlayer spacing of TaS2 increases from 0.6 to 1.0 nm on intercalation of pyridine.
Dramatic changes in the valence band of graphite, resulting from the insertion of bromine between the layers, are directly measurable using the ESCA technique.
