We report the case of a 64-year-old patient who developed autoimmune hemolytic anemia with thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure shortly after the infusion of the 11th cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy with oxaliplatin, folinic acid and 5-fluorouracil (FOLFOX 4), and was successfully treated by means of plasmapheresis, corticosteroids and dialysis. To the best of our knowledge, only seven other cases have been described in the literature, but we believe this serious adverse event induced by oxaliplatin is more frequent than this would suggest.
Etozolin is a new diuretic, thiazolidone derivate, not related to sulphonamide: it differs from the other loop diuretics for a longer action profile, similar to the benzothiodiazides’ one. The drug is metabolized in the active form ozolinone, that prolongs single-dose efficacy longer than 24 hours.
This paper reports a patient with salt-losing nephropathy, phosphaturia, glucosuπa, hypercalcmria and bicarbonaturia, i.e. urinary abnormalities due to proximal tubular defects. Oral indomethacin caused a complete normalization of urinary alterations. These results show that indomethacin is effective in the treatment of proximal tubular defects and suggest that this therapeutic effect is due to an overall increase in proximal tubular reabsorption.
