This article provides a description of a new genus and species of Sesiini, Osmiasphex gorongosusgen. nov. & sp. nov., from central Mozambique. The new genus is characterized by an unusually short and broad head, with short, clavate antennae and short labial palpus with a greatly reduced terminal segment. It appears to be a mimic of bees of the genus Osmia Panzer, 1806.
This work presents the first descriptions of the pupal morphology of two species of western Palaearctic clearwing moths, Pyropteron biedermanni Le Cerf 1925 and Pyropteron doryliformis (Ochsenheimer 1808). The main morphological features are described and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Diagnostic characters as well a key for the determination of pupae of the studied species and related taxa Pyropteron chrysidiformis (Esper 1782) are presented. The significance of frontal setae as one of the key diagnostic features of Sesiidae pupae is discussed.
This work presents the first description of the last instar larval and pupal morphology of the metalmark moth species Choreutis muhabbet Koçak, 2008. All diagnostic morphological features are described in detail, and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Diagnostic features for the genus Choreutis (Hübner) based on the described last instar larvae and pupae, are proposed and discussed. We compare the description of larval and pupal morphology of C. muhabbet to known morphological features of the preimaginal stages of other Choreutis species, especially with Choreutis pariana (Clerck).
Two species used to be included in the African genus Nadus: Nadus overlaeti (Navás, 1931) and Nadus sudanensis Navás, 1935. Following our revision of the genus, we propose that Nadus sudanensis Navás, 1935 (syn.nov.) should be a new junior synonym of Nadus overlaeti (Navás, 1931). The monobasic genus and species are redescribed. Several photographs illustrate morphological features. The distribution, habitat, and seasonal activity of the species are given.
In the paper, we presented ptyctimous mites collected from Nearctic (Canada, USA), Neotropical (Dominicana), Palaearctic (Scotland, Italy, Russia, Nepal, Egypt), Afrotropical (Ethiopia, Gabon, Congo, Mozambique, Madagascar, Réunion), South Africa, Oriental (Maldives, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, China) and Australasian (Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand) regions. Information of Mesoplophora (Parplophora) flavida Niedbała, 1985 and M. (P.) polita Niedbała, 1985 phoretic on different insects (Coleoptera: Passalidae) are presented. A new species Atropacarus (Hoplophorella) additus Niedbała sp. nov., is described from Madagascar. Supplementary descriptions and some remarks of ten species from six genera are given (including two paratypes of previously synonymous species). Information on the distribution and location of 85 species of 18 genera is also presented. Fifty-three species were found for the first time in the zoogeographical region or given country.
This work presents the first description of the larval morphology of the clearwing moth species Sesia bembeciformis (Hübner, [1806]). The description of the pupa is expanded with new data. All diagnostic morphological features are described in detail, and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. A key to the described larvae of Sesia bembeciformis, S. apiformis, S. yezoensis and S. siningensis is provided. Diagnostic features for the genus Sesia, based on the described larvae and pupae, are proposed and discussed.
This work presents the first description of the morphology of the last larval instar and pupa of the clearwing moth species Paranthrene diaphana (Dalla Torre & Strand, 1925). All diagnostic morphological features are described in detail, compared with the closely related species Paranthrene tabaniformis (Rottemburg, 1775) and P. insolitus Le Cerf 1914, and the features are illustrated with photographs and line drawings. The research on clearwing moths in Tehran Province (central Iran) has revealed that P. diaphana is a serious new pest that causes significant damage to babylon weeping willow trees Salix babylonica L. (Salicaceae).
Three new species of oribatid mites (Allonothrus malgorzatae Ermilov & Bąkowski sp. nov., Aleurodamaeus murombodziensis Ermilov sp. nov. and Pilobatella sofalaensis Ermilov sp. nov.) are described from central Mozambique. The morphology of tritonymph of A. murombodziensis is studied.
This work presents the first description of the pupal morphology of the clearwing moth species Synanthedon codeti (Oberthür, 1881) and S. theryi Le Cerf, 1916. All diagnostic morphological features are described in detail, compared with the closely related species S. vespiformis (Linnaeus, 1761), and the features are illustrated with photographs and line drawings.
The present study is based on oribatid mite materials collected from Mozambique in 2019. A list of identified taxa, including 53 species/subspecies from 44 genera and 28 families is provided. Of these, six species are new to science, all other taxa are recorded for the first time in the Mozambican fauna. One new species, Galumnella mikhailovi Ermilov sp. nov., is described herein: it is similar to G. csavasorum in the presence of setiform, unilaterally spinose bothridial setae and rugose notogaster, but differs in smaller body size, the presence of monodactylous legs and rounded rostrum, as well as in the absence of sublamellar line and rugose sculpturing in the anogenital region.
The clearwing moth, Tyrictaca hyalina (Kallies & Arita, 2001) (Tinthiini, Sesiidae), was reared from cultivated Ficus microcarpa L.f. which were imported from China to Poland. Tyrictaca hyalina is native to southeast Asia and was probably reared before from the same imported Ficus plants in Germany and France. This article presents the first description of the pupal morphology of Tyrictaca. We compare the description of pupal morphology of T. hyalina to known morphological features of the pupae of other Tinthiini species. The morphological characters of adult and male genitalia are also presented.
Two new species of the family Galumnidae are described from soil-litter in the riverine forest of Gorongosa National Park (Central Mozambique). Allogalumna mozambiquensis Ermilov sp. n. differs from all species of the genus by the morphology of bothridial seta (with the head having a long setiform tip). Neoctenogalumna gorongosaensis Ermilov sp. n. is similar to N. congoensis in the bothridial seta with developed head, specific notogastral ornamentation and narrowly elongate postanal porose area, but differs from the latter by the smaller body size, heavily ciliate bothridial seta and diagonal position of adanal lyrifissure.

The Paleotropical tribe Melanitini (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae) has until now been considered to be represented in the Afrotropical region by two genera - Melanitis Fabricius and Gnophodes Westwood - and six species. Here, we demonstrate that the former genus Gnophodes comprises two lineages well-defined by morphological and genetic traits. According to the new arrangement Gnophodes sensu nov. comprises five species. Gnophodes betsimena (Boisduval) is split into three allopatric species including - G. betsimena, stat.rev. restricted to Madagascar, G. parmeno, stat.reinst. found in the main African rain forest block, and G. diversa, stat.reinst. occurring in East and Southern Africa. Two species - G. grogani Sharpe and G. heroni Pyrcz & Collins, sp.n. are montane specialists. The new genus Haydonia Pyrcz & Collins, gen.n. comprises four species previously placed in Gnophodes, including H. chelys (Fabricius), comb.n., two taxa, H. pythia (Fabricius), comb.n., stat.reinst. and H. harpa (Karsch), comb.n., stat.reinst., previously considered as synonyms of H. chelys, reinstated as valid species, and one new species - H. hassoni Pyrcz & Collins, sp.n. - from Katanga. At the same time, four other taxa are confirmed as synonyms of H. pythia, H. chelys or H. harpa. The two genera differ most immediately by the shape and position of male alar organs, elsewhere designated as androconia. They also differ notably in many aspects of female genitalia, however male genitalia vary little between the species and genera of Melanitini. A parapatric pattern of distribution is uncovered, with related species replacing each other along an elevational gradient. Montane species, H. chelys and G. heroni sp.n., present disjunct distributions being found in the mountains of western Uganda and eastern D.R. Congo, and again in the highlands of Cameroon. In addition, one species is removed from the genus Melanitis and placed in a new monobasic genus Ducarmeia Pyrcz gen.n. Ducarmeia ansorgei (Rothschild), comb.n. based on a salient synapomorphy of adults, a reflector patch situated on hindwing upperside anal fold. Further evidence is found in venation, female genitalia and molecular data. COI data were obtained for nine species, confirming the above findings, with the exception of the unresolved G. parmeno clade. Early stages are partially described for four species.
A list of 74 species of the Sphingidae (Lepidoptera) recently sampled at sites in Maputo, Gorongosa, Manica, Cabo Delgado and Zambezia provinces of Mozambique is provided. All species are illustrated of which fourteen are recorded for the first time from Mozambique.
Thirty dragonfly species were collected at 11 localities, mostly situated in central provinces of Mozambique, in the Gorongosa National Park, adjacent areas and the Chimanimani National Reserve buffer zone. These data include a new country record of Phyllogomphus selysi and records of several other species that have rarely been recorded so far in relatively poorly-explored Mozambique, such as Atoconeura biordinata, Hadrothemis scabrifrons, Gynacantha manderica, Gomphidia quarrei and Olpogastra lugubris. Faunistic considerations are given with some remarks on morphological traits.
