Draw-down data collected during a pumping test on a well in the Indo-Gangetic alluvium of India are subjected to detailed analysis in order to determine the hydrologic properties of the aquifer and the aquiclude. The coefficient of transmissibility T and the coefficient of storage S were determined by assuming that the aquifer fulfils all the assumptions for the application of the Theis and Theis-Jacob non-steady state methods, but it was found that the values of T and S did not remain constant with the time of pumping. This result led to the conclusion that there were deviations from the conditions which are assumed in the derivation and application of the Theis non-equilibrium equation. By taking into consideration the various possibilities it was concluded that the aquifer behaved as a leaky confined aquifer.
