As robots are introduced to more and more complex scenarios, the issues of trust become more complex as various groups, peoples, and entities begin to interact with a deployed robot. This short paper explores a few scenarios in which the trust of the robot may come into conflict between one (or more) entities or groups that the robot is required to deal with. We also present a scenario concerning the idea of repairing trust through a possible apology.
If a human and a robot team need to approach a specific group to make an announcement or delivery, how will the human describe which group to approach, and how will the robot approach the group? The robots will need to take a relatively arbitrary description of a group, identify that group from onboard sensors, and accurately approach the correct group. This task requires the robot to reason over and delineate individuals and groups from other individuals and groups. We ran a study on how people describe groups for delineation and identified the features most likely used by a person. We then present a framework that allows for an agent to detect, delineate, and select a given social group from the context of a description. We also present a group detection algorithm that works on a mobile platform in real-time and provide a formalization for a Group Selection Problem.
How should a robot approach a group of people? To answer this, we examine a large real-world data set of approximately 1500 individuals and find that, contrary to previous models, people do not simply approach an individual within the group. They use features of the group to determine aspects of their approach. To explain and test these features, we formalize an Approach Problem and develop several strategies of determining approach to a group. These strategies are then compared to the empirical data. One strategy performed consistent with the empirical data, which we then demonstrate on a robot platform.
Goal Reasoning (GR) agents have been deployed in many domains with varying properties, where each agent has typically been tested in at most a few such domains. This has made it difficult to directly compare GR agents. In this paper we propose the card game Fluxx as a domain that can be used for deploying many GR agents. The base game of Fluxx sets the basic game rules and environment (i.e., the cards) but a large collection of expansions exist that introduce new game mechanics and card types. Thus, a single game provides several environments with differing complexity and properties that can be clearly described and defined. Also, Fluxx offers several other interesting properties for GR agents (e.g., rapid goal changes impact longer-term goal planning). We describe the key properties and benefits of Fluxx, and provide a formal description of the game.
As the area of Explainable AI (XAI), and Explainable AI Planning (XAIP), matures, the ability for agents to generate and curate explanations will likewise grow. We propose a new challenge area in the form of rebellious and deceptive explanations. We discuss how these explanations might be generated and then briefly discuss evaluation criteria.
The goal of the DISSECT program is to integrate computational thinking lessons into general education K-12 classrooms via graduate student/teacher partnerships. The idea of combining the teaching of CT with other disciplines is not new and it has taken shape in a variety of recent efforts in the formal education of youth. What is promising and innovative is the approach as it is implemented in K12 DISSECT classrooms. Through a collaborative teaching partnership, teachers gain a new perspective regarding computer science, and in cooperation with graduate students well-versed in computer science concepts, develop lessons and course modules that serve two purposes: 1.) Address K-12 content standards in core disciplines (e.g., language arts, life science) and 2.) Introduce CT concepts, such as abstraction, algorithms, data analysis and modeling. This poster describes ways computational thinking (CT) is taught in general K-12 classrooms in New Mexico through cooperative teaching. Along with their potential to stimulate interest in computing, these pilot modules were viewed by K12 teachers as enhancing disciplinary course content that teachers are charged with teaching (e.g., middle school science, language arts), deemed vital for sustainability in K12 schools by participating teachers. Preliminary data indicate graduate student and teacher satisfaction with cooperative teaching of CT. Next steps for research will involve student level data collection and analysis.
In this research, commitments - specifically collective commitments - are looked at as a way to model connections between agents in groups. Using the concepts and ideas from action languages, we propose to model these commitments as actions along with the other basic actions that autonomous agents are capable of performing. The languages developed will be tested against different examples from various multi-agent system (MAS) areas and implemented to run in answer set programming.
This paper presents an implementation of the action language ℒ^mt in answer set programming. The novelty of this language comes from the use of processes to execute delayed effects for actions. In addition, the ability to reverse, or cancel, the processes is available. A simple example is introduced to show when reversing actions are useable - even by other agents in the domain. These processes are the base foundation for future implementation of commitments in planning for multi-agent domains.
BACKGROUND:The Comparative Data Analysis Ontology (CDAO) is an ontology developed, as part of the EvoInfo and EvoIO groups supported by the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center, to provide semantic descriptions of data and transformations commonly found in the domain of phylogenetic analysis. The core concepts of the ontology enable the description of phylogenetic trees and associated character data matrices.RESULTS:Using CDAO as the semantic back-end, we developed a triple-store, named CDAO-Store. CDAO-Store is a RDF-based store of phylogenetic data, including a complete import of TreeBASE. CDAO-Store provides a programmatic interface, in the form of web services, and a web-based front-end, to perform both user-defined as well as domain-specific queries; domain-specific queries include search for nearest common ancestors, minimum spanning clades, filter multiple trees in the store by size, author, taxa, tree identifier, algorithm or method. In addition, CDAO-Store provides a visualization front-end, called CDAO-Explorer, which can be used to view both character data matrices and trees extracted from the CDAO-Store. CDAO-Store provides import capabilities, enabling the addition of new data to the triple-store; files in PHYLIP, MEGA, nexml, and NEXUS formats can be imported and their CDAO representations added to the triple-store.CONCLUSIONS:CDAO-Store is made up of a versatile and integrated set of tools to support phylogenetic analysis. To the best of our knowledge, CDAO-Store is the first semantically-aware repository of phylogenetic data with domain-specific querying capabilities. The CDAOStore is a portal aimed at facilitating the storage and retrieval of data and metadata associated to studies in the field of evolutionary biology and phylogenetic analysis. The novelty of CDAOStore lies in the use of a semantic-based approach to the storage and querying of data. This enables CDAOStore to overcome the data format restrictions and complexities of other repositories (e.g., TreeBase) and to provide a domain-specific query interface, derived from studies of querying requirements for phylogenetic databases. CDAOStore represents the first full implementation of the EvoIO stack, an inter-operation stack composed of a formal ontology (the Comparative Data Analysis Ontology), an XML exchange format (NeXML), and a web services API (PhyloWS). CDAOStore has been implemented on top of an RDF triple store, using a combination of standard web technologies and logic programming technology. In particular, we employed Prolog to support some of the format transformation tasks and, more importantly, in the implementation of several of the domain-specific queries, whose structure is beyond the reach of standard RDF query languages (e.g., SPARQL). CDAOStore is operational and it already hosts over 90 million RDF triples, imported from TreeBase or submitted by other domain scientists.
Adult neurogenesis mainly occurs in two brain regions, the subventricular zone and the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is widely expressed throughout the brain and is known to enhance in vitro hippocampal cell proliferation. Mice lacking either NPY or the Y1 receptor display lower levels of cell proliferation, thereby suggesting a role for NPY in basal in vivo neurogenesis. Here, we investigated whether exogenous NPY stimulates DG progenitors proliferation in vivo. We show that intracerebroventricular administration of NPY increases DG cell proliferation and promotes neuronal differentiation in C57BL/6 adult mice. In these mice, the proliferative effect of NPY is mediated by the Y1 and not the Y2 receptor, as a Y1 ([Leu(31) ,Pro(34) ]), but not a Y2 (NPY(3-36) ), receptor agonist enhanced proliferation. In addition, no NPY-induced DG cellular proliferation is observed following NPY injection when coadministered with a Y1 antagonist or in the Y1 receptor knockout mouse. These results are in line with data obtained in Y1(-/-) mice, demonstrating that NPY regulates in vivo hippocampal neurogenesis. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
The Comparative Data Analysis Ontology (CDAO) is an ontology developed, as part of the EvoInfo and EvoIO groups supported by NESCent, to provide semantics to the descriptions of data and transformations commonly found in the domain of phylogenetic inference. The core concepts of the ontology enables the description of phylogenetic trees and associated character data matrices. CDAO-store is a repository providing a rich set of API’s for querying and visualizing phyloinformatics data. It is a triple-store encoding data as RDF triples constructed according to the CDAO concept vocabulary. CDAO-store provides three classes of services: a service for importing data in CDAO format, a PhyloWS interface supporting an advanced set of queries for other external applications, and a web-interface for visualizing and interacting with data in the store.

In the first article in this series (Williams & Garland, 2002) we encouraged readers to try out elements of the Five Areas model of cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) with some patients. Before we further discuss the model it might be of value to reflect on your experiences. If you did try, was it successful? Did it teach you anything about your clinical skills and the patients' problems? Can you build on this experience and use the Five Areas model more widely in your practice? If you did not try this out, why not? Were you prevented by internal factors (too busy, could not see the patient, thought you could not do it) or problems beyond your control (the patient failed to turn up)? How can you overcome these obstacles?
Cross-cultural studies of depression have raised interesting issues in terms of symptoms and diagnosis in patients seeking treatment. To understand the symptom patterns of depression in a clinic population in north India, we studied 75 consecutive patients diagnosed as suffering from depression. They were asked to describe their symptoms, life events in the year before the onset of depression, and family history. Sleep disturbances, low mood and irritability were common symptoms. Suicidal intent was reported by 54% of the sample, and guilt by 56%. Study of family history and life events suggests that in those with a negative family history, the onset of depression was more likely to be related to a significant life event the commonest being family conjunct. The symptoms of this patient group are compared with the symptoms of depression reported from clinical samples in south India, Bombay and the West. North Indian samples have low rates of delusions, whereas Bombay samples reveal low levels of hypochondriasis, agitation, guilt and suicidal thoughts. The roles of cultural factors, family responsibilities and expectations are discussed in relation to depression across cultures. These findings also have implications for the clinical management of patients from the North Indian diaspora presenting with depression.
My paper will describe the evolution of the poetics in performance of Roger McGough, one of the primary theatrical and musical performers and influences of the arts renaissance that inspired Allen Ginsberg to declare Liverpool in the 1960s to be the center of the entire world's artistic consciousness at that moment. The revolutionary establishment of the first "pirate radio" station by Roynan O'Reihly, 'Radio Caroline', in the North Sea, broadcasting to all the United Kingdom and Europe the, till then, banned music of such break-through groups as The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Beatles, as well as McGough's Scaffold which he formed with Paul McCartney's brother, Michael, were all factors which generated the Edinburgh Arts Festival and Michael Horovitz's International Poetry Festival at Albert Hall and many of the political events at the Roundhouse Theatre featuring Herbert Marcuse and R.D. Laing. Happenings, Sit-ins, Living Theatre in the streets and the Rock Festivals from Woodstock to Galstonbury to the Isle of Man were all a result of the interchange of cultural energies between the United States and the United Kingdom in the 1960s. My paper will describe, explore, appraise and assay all these vital factors in the co-creative American/British synergy of that brilliant renaissance epoch.
