Research of the legionary camp at Brigetio began in 2015. Over the past 10 years, excavations have extended to the principia, a Late Roman apsidal basilica-type building, and the military bathhouse. During the 2025 season, a surface area of 7,100 m2 was excavated. The surfaces were situated relatively far from one another, functioning as test trenches across the praetentura. Ground-penetrating radar surveys had revealed the locations of several buildings, and on this basis we were abel to open trenches specifically aimed at examinig the valetudinarium, the horreum, the barracks and the scamnum tribunorum. Additional trenches were also opened in areas that could not be clearly identified through the radar imagery. In these areas, a large surviving section of opus spiactum flooring, several channels, and a 17th–18th century cemetery came to light.
A team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University have opened new areas for excavation at the Pilisszentiván-Hárs-erdő Roman village site. The investigation uncovered the entire area of Building D, which was a rectangle structure with stone foundations and an oven in the southwestern corner. East of this, Building E proved to be more extensive than previously anticipated. Another two buildings were identified in the excavation trenches. Besides the regular residential pottery, fragments of terra sigillata bowls were found which indirectly date the building of Building D before the Marcomannic War, and the abandonment of Building E to the beginning of the 3rd century.
The aim of our study is to present the research and prediction possibilities of GIs-based least-cost corridor (LCC) analysis on Roman roads in northern Pannonia. The advantage and disadvantages of studying Roman roads in Pannonia is the availability of ancient itineraries, the stations of which and thus their routes have been identified in various ways by historians and archaeologists over the last 150 years. However, the topographical characteristics of Pannonia, and in particular of northern Pannonia, which is the subject of our research, do not limit the identification of areas suitable for transport in the same way as in mountainous regions. Despite the limitations of LCC studies and the advanced Roman engineering technology, which sometimes overrode natural features, we have tried to reconstruct transport corridors which could be considered as reasonable routes according to a `topographical logic'. By filtering data from written sources, we have sought to build a dynamic and temporal model for a detailed future study of the transport network in northern Pannonia. Our approach was both predictive and postdictive. Based on the available data, it was not our aim-and perhaps, this is not feasible-to model specific road sections. Rather, we wanted to map those interprovincial corridors where we could predictively identify areas for further research and postdictively interpret existing spatial data.
As part of a new research project and a local history research project, a team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University and Archeovertex Ltd excavated a Roman village in the territory of Pilisszentiván. The settlement is located in the northwestern hinterland of the Roman town of Aquincum (today: Óbuda, Hungary) in a scarcely investigated area. The excavation brought to light two Early Roman buildings with stone foundations, a rich pottery record, several metal finds, and a building associated with workshop activities. New data on the topography of the village was also collected. The results suggest that the population of the settlement had already lived a Roman lifestyle around the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. In light of this year’s excavation, some of the results of last year’s campaign may be reconsidered.
The excavation of the legionary camp at Brigetio began in 2021. Throughout the last four campaigns, 2,200 square meters of the baths were unearthed, which span a total of well over 6,000 square meters. In 2024 the work continued across four surfaces. The excavations here shed a light on the size of the bath, which extended westward over a much larger area than previous excavations and radar surveys had suggested. In connection with the heating systems of the baths, two praefurnia preserved in excellent condition, along with their two adjoining service rooms, were also unearthed. In the southern section of the baths, three lime slaking pits were discovered, a rare occurrence in military context within the Roman Empire.
In recent years, research into Roman marking irons gets more intensive as the number of the identified objects steadily increases. In this paper we attempted to collect all the known signacula ferrea from the territory of Pannonia and added three recently discovered pieces to this collection. The identified types, inscriptions and the findspots match the tendencies of other Roman military provinces.
As part of a new research project and a local history research project, a team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University and the Archeovertex Ltd. excavated a Roman rural settlement in the territory of Pilisszentiván. The settlement is located in the northwestern hinterland of the Roman town of Aquincum (today: Óbuda, Hungary) in a scarcely investigated area. We documented the previously uncovered but unpublished remains of three buildings and made new observations on the chronology and function of the excavated settlement part.
Since 2015, excavations have been carried out in different parts of the legionary fortress in Brigetio. Due to the systematic geophysical surveys of the praetentura, a large building complex came to light, which could be identified as the bath of the fortress, even before the fieldworks started in the territory. In the area of this building complex, the excavations started in 2021, and continued in the next two years. Now, an approximately 1800 m2 surface of the bath is excavated. During the last season of the fieldwork several heated and unheated rooms and three new (possible) pools and four praefurnia were unearthed. The north-eastern closure of the bath was identified, and parts of the northern apses of the basilica thermarum were unearthed. A huge number of coins and bronze small finds were discovered, and thanks to the brick stamps, some new data have become available on troop movements and military history of the Pannonian ripa.
The Roman auxiliary fort of Ad Mures (Ács-Bumbumkút, Komárom-Esztergom County, Hungary) has recently been studied intensively using geophysical surveys and a planned excavation by the team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University. The paper presents the preliminary results of these investigations, focused on the layout of the fort and the relative chronology of the site, based on the data collected during the 2023 excavation. Results indicate several analogies with the fort of Ad Statuas (Ács-Vaspuszta).
While the legionary fortress of Brigetio is one of the key sites in the province of Roman Pannonia, its inner structure and buildings are almost unknown. Although the retentura of the legionary fortress is almost entirely covered by modern buildings, the praetentura can be researched using remote sensing methods. Over the past few years, systematic excavations took place in the praetentura, based on results of the geophysical surveys. A large building complex was identified as the bath of the legionary fortress, with an area of at least 4,000 m2. In the excavation seasons 2021 and 2022, about 1,200 m2 of the bath was unearthed. Several cold and hot rooms, pools, sewers, hypocaust systems and praefurnia were found, yielding abundant find material. In the present state of research, the chronological periods and building phases of the bath are mostly unknown. The only chronological data comes from the in situ stamped bricks of the Legio XI Claudia, dating the earliest period of the bath between AD 101 and 105, which was also the earliest period of the legionary camp. From the Late Roman Period, some tegulae with the names of Lupicinus tribunus and Frigeridus dux have been preserved, which indicate building activity in the last third of the 4th century AD.
Archival data, GIS modelling, non-destructive archaeological methods and geodetic measurements are regularly used to study sections of Roman aqueducts and their hydraulic engineering. However, the starting points of these investigations are the remains and known ruins of excavated aqueducts. The present study takes the reverse approach. It describes how the Roman aqueduct of Brigetio (Kom & aacute;rom-Sz & odblac;ny, Kom & aacute;rom-Esztergom county /HU) was rediscovered in three steps. First, all the relevant archival and modern data regarding the location of the aqueduct, especially its starting and end points, were summarized. Then, an evenly sloping course prediction was manually created by using the elevation of the starting and end points. Finally, on-site non-destructive surveys were undertaken to find a section of the aqueduct. The results suggest that the reversed methodology developed here is useful in the detection of ancient aqueducts and is likely to be suitable for the discovery of all types of gravity-based conduits from all historical periods.
Brigetio, along the Danube limes, was one of the four legionary bases of Pannonia and, thus, one of the most important settlements of the province. The last excavation season so far, conducted by the Eötvös Loránd University and the Klapka György Museum of Komárom, was in 2016. The finds from previous years have been published year by year from 2010. This paper presents a catalogue and evaluation of the finds of the last, 2016, excavation campaign.
The Cape of Shabla, located 6 km east of the town with the same name, has a very rich archaeological history of some 2,500 years. The research in this area started quite early, in the late 19th century, and became more intense in the second half of the 20th century. In the last two years, Bulgarian archaeologists were joined by a group of Hungarian colleagues and established fruitful cooperation.
As in 1929 and 2007, an excavation was conducted in the close south-eastern neighbourhood of the legionary fortress of Brigetio unearthing similar archaeological features, graves of the late Roman cemetery and a barrel-lined well. The trial excavation also uncovered a pair of ditches, most likely belonging to a dirt road.
In 2020, excavations were carried out simultaneously at several locations both in the territory of the legionary fortress and the military town of Brigetio. As a result, new information was gained regarding the structure of the legionary fortress and a number of late Roman period graves were also identified. The most significant result of the campaign was the excavation of an almost intact cellar in the western zone of the canabae.
This study presents how the scientific results of economic geography can be useful in explaining and deepening our understanding of the settlement pattern, village territory or land-use regarding the Roman, Medieval and Modern period Pilis landscape. Through ordinary comparison and GIS-based investigations the relationship of the studied periods is at the paper’s focus. In the last part, the study introduces a method with which the origins of the present-day administrative boundaries can be explored in a new way.
In autumn 2019 the staff of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences conducted a rescue excavation in the suburbs of Budapest, on the territory of Pécel. Based on the long research history of the investigated site (Budapest dist. XVII, Péceli út) a settlement of the Imperial Period was expected. The excavation confirmed the expectations and two buildings, several ditches, an outdoor oven and numerous refuse pits were unearthed from the 3rd–4th century AD. The features contained many Samian ware fragments, which shed light on the Roman-Barbarian trade relations during the middle Imperial Period.
The staff of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of Eötvös Loránd University unearthed a Sarmatian settlement and a cemetery near Abony (Pest County, Hungary) in the autumn of 2018. The preliminary results point to the area’s economic importance around the turn of the 2nd–3rd century AD.
The staff of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of Eötvös Loránd University conducted a rescue excavation in the northern territory of Tura (Pest County, Hungary) in the spring and autumn of 2018. The works revealed settlement and burial features of the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age, settlement features of the Árpádian Age, one feature from the early modern period, and some traces of military activity in the Second World War. The unexpected scientific novelty of the excavation is the discovery of an extensive Árpádian Age settlement and a brick oven in one of the pit-houses.
