5-Ethoxy-1,2,3-triazine (1) can be monoand dilithiated and the lithio-1,2,3-triazines were reacted with aromatic aldehydes to give α-hydroxyaryl-1,2,3-triazines 2 and 3, which can be oxidized affording the aroyl-1,2,3-triazines 4 and 5. Condensation of 4,6-bis-(aroyl)-5-ethoxy-1,2,3-triazines 4 with ethylene diamine afforded the 1,2,3-triazino[5,4-e][1,4]diazepines 6, a new class of bicyclic heterocycles, while reaction with hydrazine led to the isolation of pyrazolo[4,3-d]1,2,3-triazines 7.
