This study at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, examined students’ travel behavior, mode choice and constraints. Data from 1,449 students were analyzed using various statistical methods, including descriptive analysis, latent class analysis (LCA), multinomial logistic regression (MNL), correlation, and linear regression. The model’s accuracy was evaluated by calculating the percent error. Walking was the most popular mode of transportation within the campus, preferred by 37% of students. Most students traveled 1-15 km, taking 10-15 minutes, with off-campus students typically making three trips to their destination. Safety concerns significantly influenced 37% of students’ travel behavior due to built-in constraints.
The waste management of plastic has become a pressing environmental issue, with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) being one of the major contributors. To address this challenge, the utilization of recycled PET fibers and strips in geotechnical engineering applications for soil stabilization has gained considerable attention. This review aims to provide a comprehensive study of the geotechnical engineering properties of recycled-PET-reinforced soils. The review examines various factors influencing the performance of PET-reinforced soils, including PET percent content, fiber length, and aspect ratio. It evaluates the mechanical properties, like shear strength, compressibility, bearing capacity, hydraulic behavior, and durability of recycled-PET-reinforced soils. The findings reveal PET reinforcement enhances shear strength, reduces settlement, and increases the bearing capacity and stability of the soil. However, it is observed that the incorporation of recycled PET fibers and strips does not lead to a significant impact on the dry density of the soil. Finally, an environmental and cost comparison analysis of recycled PET fibers and strips was conducted. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and practitioners involved in the field, offering insights into the geotechnical properties of PET-reinforced soils and outlining future research directions to maximize their effectiveness and sustainability.
This study aims to examine the structural response of glass fibre-reinforced polymer (Glass-FRP) reinforced geopolymer electronic waste aggregate concrete (GEWC) compression elements under axial compression for sustainable development. The research includes the fabrication of nine GEWC circular compression elements with different reinforcement ratios and a 3-D nonlinear finite element model using ABAQUS. The study involves a detailed parametric analysis to examine the impact of various parameters on the behavior of GEWC compression elements. The results indicate that reducing the vertical distance of glass-FRP ties improves the ductility of GEWC compression elements, and those with eight longitudinal rebars have higher axial load-carrying capacities. The finite element predictions were in good agreement with the testing results, and the put forwarded empirical model shows higher accuracy than previous models by involving the confinement effect of lateral glass-FRP ties on the axial strength of GEWC compression elements. This research work contributes to minimizing the carbon footprint of cement manufacturing and electronic waste materials for sustainable development.
This research paper addresses the urgent environmental concern of waste management by focusing on sustainable consumption by utilizing waste plastic and palm leaves to stabilize soil in geotechnical engineering. The study examines the impact of incorporating recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) strips and palm leaf ash (PLA) into clayey sand to enhance its engineering properties. The investigation involved mixing varying proportions of recycled PET strips (10 mm, 20 mm, and 30 mm in length) with clayey sand, ranging from 0% to 2% by weight of the soil with a 0.5% increment for PET strips. Similarly, PLA was mixed with the clayey sand at proportions ranging from 0% to 12% by weight of the soil with a 3% increment. The strength parameters of lateritic soil were analyzed through the execution of unconfined compressive strength (UCS), triaxial, and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests. The optimum mixture was determined to be 2% recycled PET strips with a length of 30 mm and 12% PLA by weight of the soil. This specific combination exhibited significantly improved strength parameters for the lateritic soil, highlighting its potential for sustainable soil stabilization in geotechnical applications.
The rising importance of utilizing rainwater as a sustainable and viable alternative water source is evident amid increasing urbanization and the mounting global apprehensions about water scarcity. This research aims to develop a comprehensive and sustainable approach to rainwater treatment by effectively utilizing the recently constructed solar panels at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Pakistan. The study’s distinctiveness lies in its comprehensive examination of treatment plant efficiency under various weather conditions in a water-scarce region. The main objective of this work is to maximize the harvested rainwater in order to provide safe drinking water while lessening the carbon footprint of treatment operations. The proposed University of Engineering and Technology water purification process (UETWPP) method involves a sequence of four essential rainwater filtration stages, namely aeration, absorption, sediment filtration, and finally, UV disinfection, all powered by solar energy. Water samples were collected monthly for a year to assess the quality of untreated and treated rainwater, including physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Multivariate analysis techniques were used to assess these parameters, including the Friedman test and principal component analyses. By reducing the initial set of twenty components down to the four most critical ones identified in the untreated water samples, the interrelationships among these components were investigated. The results indicate that the quality of treated water using the UETWPP process was found to be suitable for human consumption, aligning with the local standards as well as those established by the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighting the effectiveness of the process in transforming rainwater into potable water. Ultimately, this pilot project showcases the viability and economic efficiency of the proposed system, rendering it easily implementable in other regions.
The greatest degree of responsibility lies on both parents and teachers to impart sex education to their children. The Religious scholars, teachers and parents are responsible for imparting sex education to children. The biggest problem of present era is to understand the importance of sex education at early stage from the Islamic perspective. The result this research has shown explicitly that the Quranic injection put restriction over the moral training of children to keep them on the straightway. So the application of sexual education since the early stages indispensable to keep them away from unislamic practice. The result of this research can provide the suitable solution and clear concepts of sex education in accordance of Islamic Jurisprudence.
