Levan, a β-(2,6)-linked fructose homopolysaccharide, has gained increasing attention as a multifunctional biopolymer for cosmetic and cosmeceutical applications. Owing to its distinctive molecular architecture, levan uniquely combines high molecular weight, pronounced bioadhesive capacity, and remarkably low intrinsic viscosity, which facilitates its integration into diverse formulation platforms, including hydrogels, films, emulsions, and self-assembled nanostructures. This review presents a comprehensive overview of levan with a particular emphasis on skin health-related applications. It begins by outlining its physicochemical properties and biological features, followed by a critical examination of its mechanisms of action and translational relevance based on recent scientific studies and patent landscape analyses. Experimental evidence indicates that levan acts as an effective moisturizing agent comparable to hyaluronic acid, while also exhibiting tyrosinase inhibitory activity associated with skin-brightening effects. Additionally, its capacity to enhance collagen synthesis, regulate matrix metalloproteinases, and reduce wrinkle formation underscores its anti-aging potential. Both in vitro and in vivo studies further demonstrate its ability to stimulate keratinocyte and fibroblast proliferation, supporting tissue regeneration and wound repair. Complementary antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities reinforce its suitability for multifunctional and sustainability-driven cosmetic formulations. Despite its favorable safety profile, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, levan remains underutilized relative to established polysaccharides in the cosmetic sector. By identifying current technological limitations, scalability challenges, and gaps in clinical validation, this review highlights strategic directions for advancing levan towards broader commercial implementation in next-generation skin care and hair-care technologies.

Hydrogels are three-dimensional networks formulated from natural or synthetic polymers with a high capacity to absorb and transport water in their structure. Hydrogels are prepared from the crosslinking of their polymeric chains, which involves two basic mechanisms: chemical crosslinking and physical crosslinking. In chemical crosslinking, hydrogels are held together by covalent bonds; while physically cross-linked hydrogels are produced by non-covalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic forces, among others. Physically cross-linked hydrogels are more similar to biological systems due to their assembly dynamics, so they have wide biomedical applications. The most used approaches in the preparation of hydrogels by physical crosslinking include freeze-thaw, formation of stereocomplexes, ionic interaction, hydrogen bonding, crystallization, and crosslinking by hydrophobic interactions. These approaches are briefly discussed in this review. Some biomedical applications of these hydrogels will also be discussed.
Hydrogels are three-dimensional polymer matrices with recognized biomedical applications. Chemically crosslinked hydrogels offer greater mechanical stability than physically crosslinked hydrogels due to the covalent bonds between their polymeric chains. The preparation of hydrogels by chemical crosslinking involves three basic components: monomer, initiator and crosslinking agent, which must be present in proportions that do not alter the integrity of the hydrogel. The chemical crosslinking mechanism can be designed from reactions between complementary functional groups, ultraviolet light reactions, radical polymerization, high energy irradiation, among others. In this review, we revisit the chemical crosslinking mechanisms involving synthetic or natural polymers. Finally, biomedical applications of hydrogels are discussed, such as drug delivery, cell culture, tissue engineering, cancer therapy, among others.
Plutella xylostella cause considerable harm to the production of broccoli, Chinese cabbage, cabbage and cauliflower. The control of P. xylostella is mainly performed using commercial insecticides, which have even led to the emergence of resistant populations. Two easily available natural products found in different plants essential oil, thymol and eugenol, stand up as possible novel agents to control this pest. In this work a series of alkylated and acylated derivatives of eugenol and thymol were synthesized and screened for antifeedant, larvicidal and ovicidal activities against P. xylostella. The results of biological activities assays suggest that the novel 1,1’-[1,8-octanediylbis(oxy)]-bis(4-allyl-2-methoxy-benzene) (5) was the most toxic in the larvicidal test. Compounds 1-butoxy-2-isopropyl-5-methyl-benzene (8) and hexanedioic acid 1,6-bis(2-isopropyl-5-methyl-phenyl)-ester (10) were the most toxic in the ovicidal assay. The compound 8 presented the most antifeedant activity. Most of the compounds obtained were more active than commercially available insecticidal deltamethrin and azadirachtin.
In the title compound C8H14O5, the pento-furan-ose five-membered ring has a twisted conformation on two carbon atoms while the five-membered ring of the iso-propyl-idene group has an envelope conformation on an oxygen atom. Hy-droxy groups are involved an infinite network of O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds that leads to the formation of a layer parallel to the (001) plane. Only weak C-H⋯O contacts exist between neighboring layers.
In the title compound [systematic name: 5-methyl-1,3-bis-(2-oxoprop-yl)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione], C11H14N2O4, the two 2-oxopropyl groups are nearly perpendicular to the planar thymine unit. One methyl group of oxopropyl substituent is disordered. In the crystal, C-H⋯O inter-actions help to connect the mol-ecules into (001) layers.

Levan is a fructose-based homopolymer, a fructan, with emerging potential in different fields, including biotechnology, food and health. It is obtained from sucrose by a wide range of microorganisms. Levan has become a versatile biopolymer due to its physicochemical and biological properties stemming from its molecular weight, functional groups and degree of substitution. Levan can undergo changes in its molecular structure to broaden its functional properties and consequently its applications. Molecular modification methods mainly involve chemical, physical and biological changes. Chemical modification is the most widely used method to enhance the bioactivity of levan, which occurs through the addition or substitution of functional groups. Physical and biological modifications alter only the molecular weight into varied sizes. This review offers a description of the main molecular modification methods of levan and the contributions to its physicochemical and biological properties.
The asymmetric unit of the title compound {systematic name: 3-[( tert -butyldiphenylsilyl)oxy]propane-1,2-diol, C 19 H 26 O 3 Si}, contains eight chiral molecules ( Z ′ = 8). These molecules are connected via a complex system of hydrogen bonds into an infinite assembly along the [100] axis; hydrophobic tert -butyl and phenyl groups form an external coating of the assembly. These assemblies are packed by weak intermolecular interactions in a peculiar formation resembling a `header bond' masonry brick wall. Disorder of flexible fragments increases with temperature but the same crystal structure exists from 120 to 220 K (and most probably to the melting point at 334 K).
A larger laboratory scale synthesis (>60 g per run) of 5-methyluridine is presented. The critical intermediate 1,2-O-isopropylidene-a-D-ribofuranose was prepared from very cheap D-glucose via D-allose. Its L-enantiomer was obtained from L-arabinose via L-glucose, and also from L-xylose. [GRAPHICS] .
