Monitoring of ecosystem health is an urgent problem of environmental safety. S.E. Jørgensen and Yu.M. Svirezhev [15] have worked out the basics of the thermodynamic theory of ecosystems. It is shown that the exergy of solar radiation absorbed by an ecosystem is spent on carbon deposition and the removal of entropy from the ecosystem, generated by anthropogenic and natural impact. The criterion for the health of the ecosystem is the exergy contained in it. In this paper, the rate of ecosystem evapotranspiration is used for satellite mapping of ecosystem health. For this purpose, a thermodynamic impact index was introduced equal to the ratio of evapotranspiration of an impacted ecosystem to evapotranspiration of a healthy ecosystem. The ecosystem of specially protected areas or the ecosystem of a given species with the highest evapotranspiration value can be used as a healthy standard of ecosystem. A feature of this study is the introduction of technology for thermodynamic satellite mapping of ecosystem health in the “IKI-Monitoring” Center for Collective Use, including in the Vega-Science system, where, since 2001, a database of 8-day satellite composites of evapotranspiration (spatial resolution 500 × 500 m) for the entire territory of Russia has been collected in the automatic mode. The ecosystem of the Karelian Isthmus, as a representative territory of the catchment area of the Gulf of Finland, was chosen as the research object. Three examples of natural and anthropogenic effects on ecosystem demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed ecosystem health measure. It is shown that the sensitivity of the technology to ecosystem health disorders is so high that it allows mapping local ecosystem health disorders, the spatial dimensions of which are an order of magnitude smaller than the resolution of the used evapotranspiration satellite maps. It is concluded that the developed technology can be quickly applied by regional environmental authorities throughout Russia for operational synoptic analysis of the health of the ecosystem.
The research demonstrates the main abilities of using CCU ҡIKI-Monitoringә and object-based monitoring technology to analyze the state of the environment in areas where large industrial facilities producing emissions, for example, nitrogen dioxide, are located. A brief description of the composite images with the concentration of small gas components based on data from the Sentinel-5P satellite (TROPOMI device) is given. A comparison of satellite data with the concentration of nitrogen dioxide in the troposphere together with information obtained by ground-based measurements in the surface layer for Moscow is provided. Major problems of analysis and interpretation of available data related to the need to analyze meteorological information together with satellite data are identified. A technology for creating a windless composite image to localize the sources of nitrogen dioxide emissions is described. An iterative threshold method for identifying stationary sources of nitrogen dioxide emissions on the territory of Russia is proposed along with the estimation of their intensity. Some results of data processing on the concentration of nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere over million-plus cities in Russia, which are one of the most powerful sources of emissions of this gas, are given.

The Sheveluch volcano is the most active volcano in Kamchatka. The paroxysmal explosive eruption of the volcano that destroyed the lava dome in the volcanic crater continued on April 10–13, 2023. According to various satellite data, the height of the separate eruptive clouds probably exceeded 15 km above sea level. A powerful cyclone, which dominated the entire Kamchatka Peninsula, pulled the eruptive cloud to the west, turned it to the south, stretched it to the north, and directed it to the east from the volcano. The dynamics of the development of ash and aerosol clouds of this eruption is reflected in the animations made from a series of Himawari-9 satellite images in the VolSatView IS from 08:00 UTC on April 10 to 07:00 UTC on April 14 ( http://d33.infospace.ru/jr_d33/materials/2023v20n2/283-291/1683110898.webm ) and of the Arctica-M1 satellite from 16:00 to 21:30 UTC on April 10 ( http://d33.infospace.ru/jr_d33/materials/2023v20n2/283-291/1683821166.webm ). It was noted that the eruptive column was not vertical: for example, at the initial moment of the eruption on April 10 at 13:20 UTC, it deviated to the north–northeast; on April 11, at 12:00 UTC to the northwest; and, on April 12, at 7:00 UTC to the southwest. During the paroxysmal eruption, sulfur dioxide continuously entered the atmosphere, the maximum amount of which was released on April 10–11, as a result of the explosive destruction of the lava dome of the Sheveluch volcano. Ash clouds along with aerosol clouds on April 10–13 were stretched into a strip more than 3500 km long from west to northeast. On April 21–22, the Sheveluch aerosol cloud was observed in the region of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The total area of the territory of Kamchatka and the Pacific Ocean where ash and aerosol plumes and clouds were observed during the April 10–13 eruption was about 3 280 000 km2. The paroxysmal eruption of Sheveluch volcano belongs to the sub-Plinian type because it is characterized by a large height of the eruptive cloud and a long event duration. For this eruption, the Volcanic Explosivity Index is estimated to be 3–4. A detailed description of the paroxysmal explosive eruption of the Sheveluch volcano and the spread of the eruptive cloud was performed based on data from various satellite systems (Himawari-9, NOAA-18/19, GOES-18, Terra, Aqua, JPSS-1, Suomi NPP, Arctica-M1, etc.) in the information system “Remote Monitoring of Kamchatka and Kuril Islands Volcanic Activity” (VolSatView, http://kamchatka.volcanoes.smislab.ru ).

This study considers the potential application of remote sensing data from the unique Highly Elliptical Hydrometeorological Space System (HEHSS) Arktika-M, currently under construction in Russia, for detecting forest fires.A qualitative assessment of this possibility was performed by visual comparison of images obtained by the MSU-GS/VE instrument (Multispectral Scanning Instrument -Geostationary, modernized for Highly Elliptical orbits) with combustion zones detected by ISDM-Rosleskhoz (Remote Monitoring Information System of the Federal Forestry Agency), revealing the existence of pronounced thermal anomalies in the areas of fires. For a more detailed assessment, a quantitative evaluation of the likelihood of detecting fires with varying sizes by the MSU-GS/VE instrument was conducted, using combustion data collected on a specific day by ISDM-Rosleskhoz and comparing it with information obtained from the HEHSS Arktika-M on the same day.Over 5,000 wildfire zones detected during the 2023 fire season in Khabarovsk Krai and Yakutia were analyzed. The empirical dependence of the probability of observing fires of different areas in MSU-GS/VE data on the area of daily burning zone was obtained. It was found that a rather low resolution of this instrument in the 3.5-4 µm channel impedes the detection of small fires. However, as there are extended intervals between overflights of the low-orbit satellite system, Arktika-M data can also provide confirmation of early-stage fire development.Consequently, utilising Arktika-M presents novel prospects for acquiring information for monitoring natural fires throughout the Russian Federation.

Thanks to the data from the Himawari-8 satellite, we managed to recover all events happened in the area of the volcanoes: the onset of their explosions and ash falls in nearby villages, the size of the ash clouds, direction of their movement, etc.For example, ash clouds from these eruptions moved more than 4500 km southeast from the volcanoes.Ash deposits covered about 47800 km 2 of the territory of Kamchatka. In addition, based on the Himawari-8 satellite data, the animated picture of 14-18 June 2017 explosive events was created illustrating short duration of powerful explosive eruptions and long persistence of ash clouds in the atmosphere that represent a real danger for aerial transport: http://kamchatka.volcanoes.smislab.ru/animation/sample.gif.
