This paper introduces the concept of wellbeing-as-interaction. Instead of designing and evaluating technologies that locate wellbeing in the individual, this paper presents early-stage work on designing technologies for people to collaboratively express, interpret, discuss and enact wellbeing. To explore this concept, we examined the wellbeing of six pairs of university students through a 7-day deployment of a technology probe 'MoodCloud'. MoodCloud consisted of a mobile app and an ambient display to share wellbeing updates through colour. We observed three patterns of wellbeing interactions: updates, follow-ups, and message chains. Wellbeing interactions benefitted from the ambiguity of colour and a clearly defined target audience, but students also communicated through other channels to make sense of updates and to enact support. The concept of wellbeing-as-interaction seeks to offer an analytic lens for the CHI community as well as inspiration for novel wellbeing technologies that emphasise meaningful interactions with friends.
Social Enterprises (SEs) have gained a considerable amount of attention during last decade in entrepreneurship sector. This paper aims to investigate the benefits and challenges associated with the use of online communities (OCs) by actors in SE sector for value co-creation. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with actors derived primarily from 4 Facebook OCs dedicated for SEs. Results demonstrate that the benefits of using OCs include increased accessibility, time and cost effectiveness, increased responsiveness, accessing to a network of connections, and resource exchange opportunities. However, the challenges include time-consuming, budget, lack of capacity, inadequate moderation, fragmentation of efforts, and inactivity.
Student life is stressful and many students do not get enough sleep to perform well in class and in assignments. Technology use has been found to contribute to sleep deficits, but it offers a means to investigate sleep patterns and student workload. Hence the aim of this research is to explore how students at Australian universities manage stress, sleep and technologies throughout the semester. We combined rich qualitative insights from contextual interviews and cultural probes with quantitative insights from a student survey. The findings showed that (1) students consciously prioritise academic success over a healthy sleeping pattern; (2) students are sleeping one hour less than they think they should; (3) technologies both add to sleep deficits as well as help to wind down; and (4) students manage sleep and stress through a combination of planning ahead and pushing through stressful times with little sleep. We discuss the implications of these findings and highlight design opportunities for new technologies to support the strategies of planning and pushing through to encourage healthy sleep patterns and foster wellbeing.
