The cuprate anion in the title complex, dilithium bis[1,6-anhydro-beta-D-glucosidato(2-)-O-2,O-4]cuprate(II) octahydrate, Li-2[Cu(C6H8O5)(2)].8H(2)O, is a homoleptic mononuclear 1,3-polyolato(2-) complex. The ligator atoms of the levoglucosan ligand are closer together by ca 0.4 Angstrom with respect to the uncomplexed 1,3-diol moiety of the anhydro suger, thus exhibiting an enhanced flexibility compared with 1,2-diols.

At slightly alkaline pH values all five acidic protons of the furanose form of D-mannose are split off: this pentaanion can then act as a pentadentate ligand.
