Ditta Bartels (STHV. Fall, 1985) outlines the development of constructivist sociology as an outgrowth of sociology of science. It leads to recognition, she says, "that scientific knowledge represents not a true depiction of reality, but rather is shaped by and for certain political objectives" (po 73). Further, "[ijt must be recognized generally that scientific knowledge is not objective, and hence cannot serve as the undisputed, rock-hard base upon which potentially discriminatory political decisions must be erected" [p, 731· This is too sweeping a generalization to remain without comment as to its evidentiary and logical base. Bartels cites sociological studies, including ethnographic ones in functioning scientific laboratories, that reveal the operation of contextual impacts on research choices and decisions. Included among these impacts are social and political biases of the investigators. The argument moves swiftly to the conclusion that scientific research is a social and political process, with no more objectivity and validity than passionate social and political debate. Omitted, of course, is much else which goes into the scientific process, deliberately contrived to yield some level of objectivity. This activity long ago came to be known as the scientific
The author reviews Jacob Bronowski’s concept of progress based on evolution as a progression that builds biological and social forms of increasing order and complexity. The author questions Bronowski’s optimism that untrammelled advance in science and technology will inevitably lead to progress. In today’s age of nuclear development and genetic intervention, such advances can conceivably become anti-progressive. Natural selection, which in the past guided progressive evolution, must today be augmented by ‘conscious selection’ of advances based on human goals and values. Sensitively applied constraints on directions of science and particularly technology may be necessary means for ensuring that continuing progression will also be judged to be progress.
Freezing of live human embryos in cleavage stages was highlighted in the U.S. media a year or so ago when an American couple died in a plane crash, leaving an heir in the United States and two frozen human embryos in an infertility center in Melbourne, Australia.
