XML Signatures are used to protect XML-based Web Service communication against a broad range of attacks related to man-in-the-middle scenarios. However, due to the complexity of the Web Services specification landscape, the task of applying XML Signatures in a robust and reliable manner becomes more and more challenging. In this paper, we investigate this issue, describing how an attacker can still interfere with Web Services communication even in the presence of XML Signatures. Additionally, we discuss the interrelation of XML Signatures and XML Encryption, focussing on their security properties and expressiveness in different application scenarios.
In the context of security of Web Services, the XML Signature Wrapping attack technique has lately received increasing attention. Following a broad range of real-world exploits, general interest in applicable countermeasures rises. However, few approaches for countering these attacks have been investigated closely enough to make any claims about their effectiveness. In this paper, we analyze the effectiveness of the specific countermeasure of XML Schema validation in terms of fending Signature Wrapping attacks. We investigate the problems of XML Schema validation for Web Services messages, and discuss the approach of Schema Hardening, a technique for strengthening XML Schema declarations. We conclude that XML Schema validation with a hardened XML Schema is capable of fending XML Signature Wrapping attacks, but bears some pitfalls and disadvantages as well.
Highly porous metal acetabular components have emerged for revision hip arthroplasty. However, superior mechanical stability over traditional cementless components has not been demonstrated. Three different cementless acetabular components, including 2 highly porous tantalum designs, were inserted into hemipelvis specimens with a superolateral defect. Mechanical testing was performed to failure using a servohydraulic testing machine. The porous tantalum designs exhibited superior stability over the traditional cementless implant (P < .05). There was no difference in mechanical stability between the rigid modular tantalum shell and the more flexible revision tantalum shell (P > .46). In acetabular revision, highly porous tantalum acetabular components provide superior mechanical stability. However, these results suggest that improved frictional resistance is a more important design feature over implant flexibility with this particular implant.
The concept of justice has been an important one for some time in the literature. The idea that fairness and unfairness drives behavior is widely held and accepted in the field. I proposed that a two-factor view of justice will mediate the relationship between an emotion and a behavior. This view contends that the emotion is the proximal outcome of an event and that the perception of justice hinges on this emotion.
This experiment was designed to quantify the effects of gravity and boundary support conditions on a scale model of an orbiting, singly-curved parabolic thin-film reflector planned for deployment by the end of this decade. As it is well-known that membrane elements supported in tension are prone to out-of-plane rippling, a 1-m scale model of the parabolic reflector support system was constructed and tested on NASA's KC-135A Weightless Wonder microgravity aircraft. Two membranes were tested: a fabric-backed metallized membrane (76.2 µm Nylon, 38.1 µm Mylar, 0.1 µm Al) and a 127 µm metallized Kapton membrane. Each membrane was placed in the fixture, and tensioned using edge clamps that maintained the desired parabolic profile at the membrane boundaries. Targets for tracking the full-field surface deflection were provided by about 7000 2-mm dots placed on the membrane surface. In flight, the membrane configuration was monitored by four digital cameras mounted in the test enclosure. Wide-angle lenses were used on the cameras, as they had to be mounted quite close to the membrane due to restrictions imposed by the size of the aircraft. Using photogrammetry, the high-resolution digital images taken in-flight (at zero-g conditions) and on the ground (at one-g) were processed, and the three- dimensional location of each target visible in at least three images was calculated. It was found that for the same boundary condition, surface rippling under zero-g conditions was less pronounced than at one-g conditions for the fabric-backed Mylar test article.
