Orientation Imaging Microscopy allows characterization of the crystallographic orientation of grains in a polycrystal. Consequently, it permits one to define the grain boundary nature in each phase and between the phases when the studied material is a dual-phase material such as an austeno-ferritic steel. Moreover, as is shown in the present paper, this technique allows a good estimation of the surface fraction of each phase and their variation along the radius of a rod that comes from a “round–oval” groove sequence.
The relationship between titanium alloy processing, structure and properties received great attention in recent years. The aim of this paper is to determine the influence of the microstructure of a titanium alloy on its creep properties at intermediate temperature. A pronounced influence of the microstructure, quantified by image analysis, on the steady-state creep rate was found. Structures exhibiting large values of length, width, surface and/or perimeter of the primary intragranular alpha phase (αp) and thus low values for the total interfacial area between the αp and β matrix, show low creep strength at 400°C. In addition, the influence of various parameters such as the texture of the alpha phase, the size and the morphology of the α phase (at prior beta grain boundaries and secondary alpha phase) and the prior beta grain size were investigated. The effects of temperature and stress level on the creep response of the alloy were investigated in the temperature range of 400 to 470°C. The stress dependence of the steady-state creep rate indicates that an increase in temperature introduces a gradual decrease in the stress exponent n and a change of creep mechanism at 400 to 450°C, depending on the stress level. The apparent activation energy of creep was determined for different stress levels. Transmission electron microscopy observations of deformed dislocation structures developed during creep are used to interpret creep properties, and deformation mechanisms are proposed for the primary and secondary intragranular alpha phases.
Both parameters, microstructure and texture, are studied on several samples for different processes. The same route, thermomechanical treatment (forging or rolling) followed by solutioning and ageing is carried out with various temperature and deformation amount on an identical titanium alloy CORONA 5. According to three temperature fields: low (α + β), β and high (α + β) three important microstructures are obtained: equiaxed, acicular and bimodal. All measured textures present two components which vary with deformation mode and temperature of both forging and solutioning.
In (α + β) titanium alloys, the interface between the α and β phases has been widely studied, and many conflicting results have been published concerning the formation of an interface phase having an hcp or fcc crystalline structure. Several authors consider that this phase is an artifact and consists of a titanium hydride formed during thin foil preparation for TEM examination. This paper reports examinations by TEM and STEM of heat-treated Ti–6Al–4V alloy and two titanium molybdenum aluminides. The formation of an α/β interface phase is discussed as a function of composition heat-treatment and thin foil preparations. Particularly, for Ti–6Al–4V in a nonequilibrium state, a strong concentration gradient was revealed in the α/β interface, and a metastable interface phase enriched in beta-stabilizers with an fcc structure has been clearly characterized.
In this paper the different microstructures obtained following various thermal treatments on two grades of commercial-purity titanium are described and discussed. The aim of these treatments was to change the distribution of the impurities in the materials and thus modify their mechanical properties.
After a long period at high temperature (< 550 °C) during a creep test, some titanium commercial alloys present some embrittlement in the form of the absence of thermal stability. The addition of silicon is assumed by many authors to be the cause of this instability at high temperatures. In order to verify this assumption, the alloy Ti 685 with 0.215 wt.% silicon and the alloy Ti 6242 containing no silicon were compared during creep tests between 460 and 540 °C in air and under vacuum. This comparative study confirmed the beneficial role of silicon on the high temperature resistance of the Ti 685 alloy. Moreover, in the creep tests in air both these alloys presented a superficial oxidation and probably a preferential penetration of oxygen along the former β grain boundaries. This oxygen penetration is responsible for intergranular fracture of Ti alloys after a long period at high temperature.
ABSTRACT The creep of commercial titanium has been studied between 25 and 400°C. Creep tests were carried out in vacuum with continuous recording of creep curves. The material shows an improvment of creen resistance in the 150-400°C range. This anomalous behaviour is related to the following phenomena: after logarithmic creep, the deformation rate decreases more and more and reduces to zero; above 320°C “ incubation creep ” occurs. After creep, all specimen were directly carried out in tensile tests at 25°C, The tensile curves of some crept specimens give a “ yield point ”, These different features which occur in another grades of titanium, suggest a relationship between stress strain ageing linked to the impurities, and the anomalous creep behaviour.
