Groundwater is crucial for agriculture and domestic consumption. This research investigated the hydrogeochemical properties and contaminant sources of groundwater within the mountainous terrain of northern Chongqing, with the objective of evaluating its appropriateness for irrigation and potable use. The hydrochemical type of the groundwater was HCO3 - Ca, dominated by silicate and calcite dissolutions. High NO3- (29.03% exceeds 10 mg/L) were attributed to the overuse of agricultural fertilizers. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted to determine the groundwater suitability for agricultural and potable uses. The results showed that groundwater in the southwestern region, particularly within the Yangtze River mainstem watershed, exhibited less suitability for irrigation owing to its lower mineralization, in contrast to the northeastern region near the Daning River watershed. But this trend is reversed for drinking purposes. Overall, the groundwater was appropriate for both drinking (93.55% were classified as excellent) and irrigation (70.98% were classified as low restriction) purposes in the study area. Deterministic and probabilistic noncarcinogenic health risk analyses centered on nitrate exposure revealed that infants (with 13.79% of samples >1) were at greater risk than children (8.58%), adult males (6.98%), and adult females (5.24%). This underscores the urgency to reduce nitrogen fertilizer usage and improve water management in the region. This research will provide guidance for the sustainable groundwater management in mountainous regions.
Identifying the natural background levels (NBLs), threshold values (TVs), sources and health risks of potentially toxic elements in groundwater is crucial for ensuring the water security of residents in highly urbanized areas. In this study, 96 groundwater samples were collected in urban area of Sichuan Basin, SW China. The concentrations of potentially toxic elements (Li, Fe, Cu, Zn, Al, Pb, B, Ba and Ni) were analyzed for investigating the NBLs, TVs, sources and health risks. The potentially toxic elements followed the concentration order of Fe > Ba > B > Al > Zn > Li > Cu > Ni > Pb. The NBLs and TVs indicated the contamination of potentially toxic elements mainly occurred in the northern and central parts of the study area. The Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model identified elevated concentrations of Fe, Al, Li, and B were found to determine groundwater quality. The primary sources of Fe, Al, Pb, and Ni were attributed to the dissolution of oxidation products, with Fe additionally affected by anthropogenic reduction environments. Li and B were determined to be originated from the weathering of tourmaline. High levels of Ni and Cu concentrations were derived from electronic waste leakage, while excessive Ba and Zn were linked to factory emissions and tire wear. The reasonable maximum exposure (RME) of hazard index (HI) was higher than safety standard and reveal the potential health risks in the southwestern study area. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated the Li concentrations possessed the highest weight contributing to health risk. This study provides a valuable information for source-specific risk assessments of potentially toxic elements in groundwater associated with urban areas.
An in-depth understanding of nitrate-contaminated groundwater quality and risks is important for groundwater management. Hydrochemical characteristics and driving forces of groundwater quality and non-carcinogenic risks of nitrate were revealed by the integrated approaches of self-organizing map analysis, spatial visualization by geography information system, entropy and irrigation water quality indices and human health risk model. Groundwater samples were subdivided into two clusters by SOM analysis. Cluster Ⅰ including three samples were Ca-SO 4 type and cluster Ⅱ of remaining 136 samples were Ca-HCO 3 type. Hydrochemical compositions of two cluster samples were dominated by water-rock interaction: (1) calcite and gypsum dissolution for Cluster I samples, and (2) calcite dissolution, silicate weathering and positive cation exchange for Cluster Ⅱ samples. Nitrate contamination occurred in both Cluster I and Ⅱ samples, primarily induced by agricultural nitrogen fertilizer. The EWQI results showed that 90.97% in total groundwater samples were suitable for drinking purpose, while the IWQI results demonstrated that 65.03% in total groundwater samples were appropriate for irrigation purpose. The HHR model and Monte Carlo simulation indicated that the non-carcinogenic nitrated risk was highest in children. Exposure frequency was the most sensitive factor (86.33% in total) influencing the total non-carcinogenic risk, indicated by sensitivity analysis.
Basic education is a foundation-laying project of national quality education. Improving the ecological carrying level of basic education is of great practical significance to the coordinated and sustainable development of regional society and economy. Based on the panel data of Chongqing from 2011 to 2017, combined with the DPSIR theoretical model, a comprehensive evaluation index system was conducted, and the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of ecological carrying capacity of county education in Chongqing was explored by using statistical analysis and spatial analysis methods. The multiple linear regression model was used to analyze differences in the impact of economic structure adjustment on the ecological carrying capacity of county education. It was found that the level of ecological carrying capacity of county education in Chongqing showed a steady upward trend in terms of time sequence, and all the five subsystems showed the characteristics of steady development, but the influence of each subsystem on the overall carrying capacity was different. From the formation mechanism, Chongqing’s educational ecological carrying capacity is the result of a multi-factor complex system, and there are obvious differences in the influencing factors at different development stages. Therefore, it is necessary to narrow the regional differences of education ecological carrying capacity, promote the coordinated development of education among regions, and take multiple measures to effectively ensure the high quality and sustainable development of county education in Chongqing.
Elucidating the hydrogeochemical processes and quality assessment of groundwater holds significant importance for its sustainable development. In this paper, 53 groundwater samples were collected from a typical agricultural area in the northeastern Chongqing municipality in SW China. The integration of multivariate statistical analysis, ion ratio analysis, geomodelling analysis, the entropy water quality index, health risks assessment, and sensitivity analysis was carried out to explore the hydrochemical processes and quality assessment of groundwater in this study. The statistical results reveal that the cationic concentrations followed the order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na+ > K+, while the anionic components were in the order of HCO3− > SO42− > NO3− > Cl−. Based on the Piper trilinear diagram, the hydrochemical types were shown as Ca-HCO3 and Ca-Mg-HCO3 types. Hierarchical cluster analysis indicated that the groundwater samples could be categorized into three groups. The hydrochemical compositions were primarily influenced by water–rock interactions (e.g., carbonate dissolution and silicate weathering). In terms of irrigation suitability, the sodium adsorption ratios (SARs) ranged from 0.05 to 1.82, and the electrical conductivity (EC) varied from 116 to 1094 μs/cm, indicating that most groundwater samples were suitable for irrigation. The entropy-weighted water quality index ranged from 15 to 94, suggesting that the groundwater samples were suitable for drinking purposes. Non-carcinogenic human health risks followed the order of children > adult females > adult males, within the average values of 0.30, 0.21, and 0.18, respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that the parameters had the weight order of NO3 > body weight (BW) > ingestion rate (IR) > exposure frequency (EF). Hence, we recommend prioritizing the management of areas with high salinity levels, while avoiding the excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers, raising awareness among local residents about safe groundwater, and providing robust support for the sustainable development of groundwater in typical agricultural areas.
The Eastern Sichuan area is a typical fold-and-impulse zone. It is bounded by the Qiyue Mountain fault, with septal folds on the east and on the west. Based on previous geological mapping and surface geological structure research as well as the fault-related folding theory, in this study, tectonophysical simulation experiments were conducted to investigate the tectonic geometry and kinematics of the Eastern Sichuan fold-impulse zone. The experiments were conducted by selecting different experimental materials and changing the physical properties of the cover, the friction between the cover and the basement, the number of slip layers, the burial depth, and other factors. Finally, the similarity of the results to the morphological characteristics of the real geological structure was assessed. The results show that the deformation style is influenced to some extent by the brittle shear strength and the ductile shear strength of the basement, and the different interlayer cohesions between the competent and incompetent layers, the high rheology, and the burial depth of the slickensides played crucial roles in the formation of the final evolution of the Eastern Sichuan fold fault zone. The step-like system, composed of a lower crustal crystalline basement detachment surface, regional boundary fractures, and the overlying Cambrian and Triassic synclines, is a necessary condition for the formation of the Eastern Sichuan fold and fault zone and controls the overall evolution of the zone. Under the action of multiple phases of tectonic activity with different main stress orientations, the geological phenomenon of multiple superimposed phases of folding in different directions observed at present in the Eastern Sichuan area was formed. The well-developed karst features are not conducive to the construction of a project tunnel in the area where tightly closed back-slope, fissures, and normal faults have developed in the Eastern Sichuan fold and fault zone.
The Baishan Mo deposit in the eastern Tianshan Mountains is representative of the local metallogenic Triassic Mo belt. In this study, the geological characteristics, petrography, and geochemistry of the granite porphyry and the Mo deposit were examined using zircon U–Pb dating, molybdenite Re–Os isotope dating, whole‐rock geochemistry, and fluid inclusions. Results show that the crystallisation age of the Baishan granite porphyry is 229.8 ± 1.4 Ma and the Re–Os age of molybdenite in the ore body quartz vein is 225.0 ± 1.2 Ma. Therefore, the ore formed basically at the same time as diagenesis in the Late Triassic. The Baishan granite porphyry has high levels of Si, Al, and alkalis (K2O + Na2O = 5.72–8.88%) and low levels of Mg. The differentiation index is high (81.68–91.20), while the aluminium saturation index is low, indicating that the pluton belongs to metaluminous–weak peraluminous highly fractionated I‐type granite. The rock is also enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large‐ion lithophile elements but depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREE) and high‐field‐strength elements, with a distinct differentiation between LREEs and HREEs. δEu is weakly negative. The high Sr/Y and La/Yb ratios indicate geochemical characteristics similar to adakite rocks. The formation of the deposit is closely related to Mo‐rich, low‐salinity (1.23‐ to 9.73‐wt.% NaCl eqv.), and medium‐ to low‐temperature (91–280°C) magmatic fluid in the plate extension setting. The magma was derived from partial melting of thickened lower crust and possibly mixed with intrusive mantle‐derived magma. The ore‐forming fluids were uplifted, transported, mixed with meteoric water, and precipitated to form the Mo ore.
Hydrogeochemical processes and quality assessment for shallow groundwater are pivotal issues to be solved in many regions over the world due to the easy access of shallow groundwater. In this study, eighty-six water samples were collected from shallow aquifers of Chongqing, China, during July–September 2019. Multivariate statistical techniques, major ion ratios, and geochemical modeling were integrated to investigate hydrogeochemical characteristics and controlling factors. Afterwards, groundwater quality in spatial was classified by entropy-weighted water quality index and geographic information system (GIS) spatial analysis. Groundwater samples were alkaline and possessed high total dissolved solids (TDS) values. Two-group samples were distinguished as mix cations-HCO3-SO4 (group 1) and Ca-Mg-SO4 (group 2) facies. Hydrogeochemical compositions of group 1 samples were dominated by silicate dissolution and ion exchange, while sulfate and calcite dissolution were the main factors influencing the hydrogeochemical characteristics of group 2. The overall quality of groundwater samples varied greatly from excellent quality to extremely poor quality. Group 1 samples were found with excellent and good quality and suitable for drinking purposes. Group 2 samples were all unsuitable for direct drinking purposes as the quality varied from medium to extremely poor, but were spatially limited. Groundwaters with relatively poor quality were due to dissolution of sulfate that were locally enriched in the aquifers. The new findings of this study are expected to provide the reference for future management and sustainable exploitation of groundwater in Chongqing.
