Dem Einsatz robotischer Systeme in der pflegerischen Versorgung wird derzeit ein erhebliches Potenzial zugeschrieben, die Pflegearbeit in Zukunft wirksam zu unterstützen und zu entlasten - in rein praktischen Versorgungsbezügen haben sich diese Systeme noch nicht etabliert. Die Entscheidung für eine Integration sollte sorgfältig abgewogen werden, um Umsetzungsbarrieren vorzubeugen. Institutionell-systembezogene, organisatorische, nutzer*innenbezogene und letztlich auch forschungs- und entwicklungsprozessbezogene Gründe können die Integration von Innovationen in die Versorgungspraxis verlangsamen oder gar verhindern. Die hier vorgestellten Ergebnisse legen nahe, dass eine erfolgreiche Praxisimplementierung robotischer Systeme in der Pflege eine frühzeitige, kritische Auseinandersetzung und Abwägung vielschichtiger Faktoren erfordert.
Effective communication is vital in healthcare, especially in complex areas like prostate cancer diagnosis. Although there has been much research on communication among different stakeholders in healthcare, there is still a visible gap in addressing the different information exchange needs of doctors and patients, and how these can impact their communication during prostate cancer diagnosis. This paper explores these challenges from both patients' and doctors' - more specifically, radiologists' - perspectives. Through contextual inquiries and interviews with experienced radiologists, who play a key role in diagnosis, and patients with prostate cancer, we have gained valuable insights into current communication practices associated with the context and explored the potential of technology to support them. Our findings highlight the challenges faced by both stakeholders during diagnosis and their needs and preferences for improved communication. Based on those findings, we propose design implications for computer technologies to enhance communication among stakeholders, ultimately improving collaboration, efficiency, and patient outcomes in prostate cancer care.
This paper explores the emotional, ethical and practical dimensions of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into personal and professional workflows, focusing on the concept of feeling guilty as a 'c(ai)borg' - a human augmented by AI. Inspired by Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto, the study explores how AI challenges traditional notions of creativity, originality and intellectual labour. Using an autoethnographic approach, the authors reflect on their year-long experiences with AI tools, revealing a transition from initial guilt and reluctance to empowerment through skill-building and transparency. Key findings highlight the importance of basic academic skills, advanced AI literacy and honest engagement with AI results. The c(ai)borg vision advocates for a future where AI is openly embraced as a collaborative partner, fostering innovation and equity while addressing issues of access and agency. By reframing guilt as growth, the paper calls for a thoughtful and inclusive approach to AI integration.
Good human relationships are important for us to have a happy life and maintain our well-being. Otherwise, we will be at risk of experiencing loneliness or depression. In human-computer interaction (HCI) and computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), robotic systems offer nuanced approaches to foster human connection, providing interaction beyond the traditional mediums that smartphones and computers offer. However, many existing studies primarily focus on the humanrobot relationships that older adults form directly with robotic pets rather than exploring how these robotic pets can enhance human-human relationships. Our ethnographic study investigates how robotic pets can be designed to facilitate human relationships. Through semi-structured interviews with six older adults and thematic analysis, our empirical findings provide insights into how robotic pets can be designed as telerobots to connect with others remotely, thus contributing to advance future development of robotic systems for mental health.
Within practice-centred computing, working with people to understand and come up with solutions that can support them with their practices is core. This involves using a range of empirical and design methods for understanding the context, elaborating design implications, and devising and evaluating artefacts, both in terms of their usability and the appropriation opportunities that they can offer. When evaluating prototypes in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) we, as researchers, have more than once over a long period of time seen that participants have little time to engage in systematic approaches to co-design. Our experience shows that very often users cannot take part in activities that take longer than two hours, despite their willingness to do so. This suggests that we are in urgent need of more flexible approaches. In this paper we propose the concept of blended workshops as an approach to work with SME workers for the design of digital technologies to support their practices. This approach entails both synchronous and asynchronous activities, focusing on the elaboration of both physical and digital artefacts, which evolves over a longer period of time towards useful socio-technical solutions which can be easily appropriated at the workplace. The asynchronous elements are designed to allow participants to investigate and reflect in their own time and can can be key for stronger and flexible user participation in practice-centred design.
The transition of people with disabilities from sheltered workshops to the general labour market is a central goal of inclusive employment policies. In the context of ongoing digitalization, the question arises as to what potential digital technologies offer for this transition – and what challenges organizations face in this process. Despite political efforts, structural barriers remain, particularly regarding the acquisition and application of digital skills. Based on qualitative interviews with managers from various institutions in a sheltered workshop, the study identifies several key challenges: Digital affinity in sheltered workshops heavily depends on individual staff members; there is a lack of central points of contact, structured training programs, and strategic concepts for digital transformation. Moreover, assistive technologies often go unused – not due to irrelevance, but because of limited awareness, time constraints, and financial limitations. The findings show that the development of digital skills is essential for enabling participation in the general labour market – both for professionals and for people with disabilities. The research highlights the need for systematic support, practical skills development, and stronger networking between workshops and companies in order to promote digital inclusion in the long term.
Using LLMs in healthcare, Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, and Social Computing requires the examination of ethical and social norms to ensure safe incorporation into human life. We conducted a mixed-method study, including an online survey with 111 participants and an interview study with 38 experts, to investigate the AI ethics and social norms in ChatGPT as an everyday life tool. This study aims to evaluate whether ChatGPT in an empirical context operates following ethics and social norms, which is critical for understanding actions in industrial and academic research and achieving machine ethics. The findings of this study provide initial insights into six important aspects of AI ethics, including bias, trustworthiness, security, toxicology, social norms, and ethical data. Significant obstacles related to transparency and bias in unsupervised data collection methods are identified as ChatGPT's ethical concerns.
Robots and other autonomous agents are well-positioned in the research discourse to support the care of people with challenges such as physical and/or cognitive disabilities. However, designing these robots can be complex as it involves considering a wide range of factors (e.g., individual needs, physical environment, technology capabilities, digital literacy), stakeholders (e.g., care recipients, formal and informal caregivers, technology developers), and contexts (e.g., hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient care facilities, private homes). The challenges are in gaining design insights for this unique use case and translating this knowledge into actionable, generalizable guidelines for other designers. This one-day workshop seeks to bring together researchers with diverse expertise and experience across academia, healthcare, and industry, spanning perspectives from multiple disciplines, including design, robotics, and human-computer interaction, with the primary goal being a consensus on best practices for generating and operationalizing design knowledge for robotic systems for care settings.
Students benefit from international study programmes in fields such as HCI. However, user-centred research in a foreign country has some challenges, especially language hurdles when going into the field and conducting ethnographic and participatory studies. A particular obstacle is added when targeting groups that do not speak English, such as in Germany, where English was not taught in schools until the 1970s. The task and challenge of the present project, 'Research Buddy', is to bring together young international students and older people as co-researchers in Germany. We describe the participatory development of the concept of a matching platform and its design. In focus groups with older people, university faculty and students, requirements for a collaborative research infrastructure were jointly identified and prototypically implemented. The empirical results focus on the possibilities the platform offers for qualitative citizen science in the field of age tech.
Die Doppelnatur soziotechnischer Systeme benötigt neue Gestaltungsparadigmen, die über herkömmliche informatisch-instrumentelle Ansätze hinausgehen. Mit der Erkenntnis, dass digitale Anwendungen die soziale Praxis verändern, aber auch gesellschaftliche Einflüsse die IT-Gestaltung beeinflussen, müssen Gestaltungsprinzipien sich an realweltlichen Praktiken orientieren und an situierten Aneignungsformen der avisierten Nutzendengruppen. Dies gelingt mit neueren Ansätzen des „practise-based design“, das auf ethnographiegestützten und partizipativen Gestaltungsprinzipien basiert und eine Reihe von Grundannahmen partizipativer Ansätze in der Gerontologie teilt. Der Beitrag möchte grundlegende Ansätze des Practise-based design aus dem Umfeld der Sozioinformatik erläutern und mit partizipativen Ansätzen in der Gerontologie in Verbindung setzen. Der Beitrag entwickelt eine interdisziplinäre Perspektive auf die Gestaltung soziotechnischer Systeme. Es werden interdisziplinäre Verbindungslinien aufgeführt, die aktuelle Entwicklungsvorhaben inspirieren können und einen Korridor öffnen für Weiterentwicklungen analytischer, konzeptueller und methodisch-methodologischer Perspektiven. Die Diskussion bietet interdisziplinäre Ansätze für die Konzeption, Gestaltung und Aneignung von IT-Anwendungen und Dienstleistungen für und mit älteren Menschen auf der Basis partizipativer und qualitativ-empirischer Vorgehensweisen. Damit wird angestrebt, die IT-Gestaltung stärker auf situierte Praktiken, soziokulturelle Kontexte und „Sense-making“-Prozesse älterer Personen auszurichten.
