Species new to the mammalian fauna of Big Bend Ranch State Park are presented. New information for several species known from the Park that adds to the knowledge of distribution and presence within the Park also is presented.
This paper presents a comprehensive report on fishes collected from Independence Creek and the confluence area of the Pecos River from 11 June 1954 to and including 3 March 1976. Collections from Independence Creek were made with a small seine and those collections from the Pecos River were made with a small seine, two sizes of trammel nets, and two sizes of gill nets. The total of 29 collections at the Joe Chandler Ranch area resulted in 19,474 fish specimens which represented 37 species. Collection data are given for each of the 29 samples and include stream name, field number, date of collection, number of species in sample, number of specimens in sample, and total listing of species in sample. A listing of species, frequency of occurrence of each species in the 29 samples, total specimens of each species, and percent relative abundance are presented in Appendix.
External and cranial measurements of specimens of the cactus mouse (Peromyscus eremicus) from two localities in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas (Harte Ranch addition to Big Bend National Park; Big Bend Ranch State Park) were analyzed statistically to determine morphomet¬ ric variation in mice from these two localities. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were performed on 50 specimens from each locality. Discriminant function analysis of cranial characteristics was used to classify individual specimens to each locality. Results suggest that there is minimal significant difference in mice from the two localities, but not enough to war¬ rant recognition of geographic variation, and there are no significant morphological differences between sexes.
County records for mammals in the Permian Basin are reported based on fieldwork and museum surveys. Twenty-six records representing 20 species are reported from Crane, Ector, Loving, Ward and Winkler counties.
The silver-haired bat, Lasionycteris noctivagans, occurs sporadically throughout much of Texas and is generally considered a migratory tree bat. Few records have been reported from Texas, resulting in the conclusion that this is a rare species in the state (Schmidly, 1991). There is limited knowledge regarding natural history characteristics of this species, such as ecology and biogeography. The known northern distributional limit of the species extends from southern Alaska through southern Canada. The southern limits of the silver-haired

Vampyrus cirrhosus Spix, 1823:64. No type locality stated in Spix’s description, but on page 53 Spix said the bats were collected in Brazil. Type locality restricted to the state of Pará, Brazil, by Husson (1962:115). Previous restrictions to Pernambuco, Brazil, based on the type locality of Trachops fuliginosus Gray, 1847, are invalid. Ph[yllostoma]. cirrhosum Fischer, 1829:126. Name combination. Vampyris cirrhosum Gray, 1847:14. Emendation of Vampyrus cirrhosus Spix. Trachops fuliginosus Gray, 1847:14. Type locality ‘‘Pernambuco,’’ Brazil (5 Vampyrus cirrhosus Spix). Tylostoma mexicana Saussure, 1860:484. Type locality ‘‘les régions chaudes du Mexique.’’ Questionable whether this bat is actually assignable to the genus Trachops (Goldman 1925). Listed as synonym by Peters (1865) and Dobson (1878). Tylostoma later recognized as a junior objective synonym of Tonatia (Gardner and Ferrell 1990). Trachyops cirrhosus Dobson, 1878:481. First use of name combination and incorrect subsequent spelling of Trachops Gray, 1847. Trachops coffini Goldman, 1925:23. Previous systematic studies, using morphometric, allozymic, and cytogenetic data, have produced conflicting results as to the relationship of Dipodomys elator to other species of kangaroo rats. In this study, phylogenetic relationships of D. elator and other closely related taxa (D. merriami, D. phillipsii, D. ordii, D. spectabilis, and D. nelsoni) were examined using nucleotide-sequence data (1,143 bp) from the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene. With 1 exception, all parsimony and neighbor-joining analyses (regardless of differential weighting scheme or method of calculating genetic distances) indicated that D. elator is most closely related to D. phillipsii. As a result, it is recommended that D. elator and D. phillipsii be included within the phillipsii species group.
