Biotype B of the sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), is a worldwide pest of many agronomic and horticultural crops, including tomato. Extensive pesticide use targeting this pest has led to the development of resistance to every major class of insecticides. The baseline toxicity of spiromesifen was established for laboratory susceptible and field collected B tabaci biotype B. populations in Florida in 2005 and 2006, respectively, using a leaf dip bioassay method for 2nd instar. LC50 values for field populations of B. tabaci ranged from 0.63 mg[AI]l(-1) to 0.86 mg[AI]l(-1) in 2005 and from 0.46 mg[AI]l(-1) to 2.08 mg[AI]l(-1) in 2006. No population had a RR50 value over 3.5 in either year and the fiducial limits of the LC50 values for the laboratory and field populations overlapped, indicating no differences among them. The laboratory and field baseline toxicity data generated in this study confirmed the susceptibility of field populations of B. tabaci to spiromesifen and will be useful in documenting any future changes in the susceptibility of the whitefly to the insecticide.
Nabidae Reduviidae SpidersTransplants were set 10 Mar, 18 inches apart within the row on 8-inch-high and 32-inch-wide beds of Myakka fine sand covered with white polyethylene mulch.Each plot consisted of a single 18-ft long row with a row spacing of 5 ft and a plot spacing of 7 ft.Treatments were replicated four times in a RCB design and were applied with a 2.5 gal, hand-held CO 2 -powered sprayer at 60 gpa on 6 and 13 Apr and at 90 gpa on 25 May and 14 Jun (Table 1).The sprayer was fitted with a D-5 disk and no.45 core and was operated at 60 psi.The number of Liriomyza trifolii leafmines that were empty or were occupied by living or dead larvae were counted on 8 and 12 Apr during a 30 sec search of each plot by two individuals, and the numbers were totaled for analysis.Fruit damaged by lepidopterous larvae were removed from the plants on 24 May and the plants sprayed the following day.Fruit were harvested on 6 Jun from the middle 10 plants of each plot and the number and weight of non-damaged fruit and the number of fruit damaged by armyworm larvae and true bugs were determined.On 17 Jun the middle 10 plants of selected plots were cut at the soil surface, inverted over the plastic bed, and shook.The number of pest and beneficial insects dislodged were counted.Data were subjected to ANOVA and means were separated using LSD (P = 0.05).
