An experiment in education for medical and English Honours students was conducted during the 1983 academic year. Eight evening seminars were held, at which literary pieces were presented and discussed. All had relevance to medicine. No quantitative results could be deduced, but the voluntary attendance and enthusiasm remained high from beginning to end, and suggest that this is a programme worth developing.

Whole tibialis anterior muscles were removed from a number of dogs and were then reimplanted in the original sites. Microsurgical anastomoses of the major nerve, artery, and vein were performed. Biopsy revealed some minor regenerative changes in the muscle a few weeks after the operation. Electromyographic recordings 6-9 months after implantation showed near-complete functional recovery of the muscles. This was confirmed histologically. The study demonstrates not only that whole-muscle reimplantation is technically feasible but that a functionally satisfactory result may be expected.
This lecture explores the factors controlling regeneration and reconstitution of skeletal muscle following vascular and neural injury by giving an account of some experimental work in this field, which is then linked to the problem of the use of whole-muscle transplants in clinical surgery.

In this article I have tried to do four things. 1. Present the facts and problems of health care in developing nations. 2. Describe what is already being done. 3. Analyse the components of health plans which would be workable in view of costs and personnel. 4. Suggest that every Australian medical practitioner—indeed, every doctor in the affluent world — could and should be thinking in terms of taking responsibility for parts of the world where good health is a rarity and poor health the norm. (We tend to accept the situation as we accept Australian flies — a bloody nuisance, but there's nothing we can do about them, so let us pretend they do not exist, unless they actually annoy ME or contaminate MY food.) If every Australian swatted 10 flies a day, every day, the situation could only improve. So if every doctor, nurse, etc., did one thing towards improving world health outside his own job, something would happen.
The ability of striated muscle fibres to undergo limited regeneration following injury is an established fact, but the precise way in which this occurs is still a subject open for investigation. With new techniques available there has been a quickening of interest in the subject. The discussions by Godman (1958) and by Field (1960) contain reviews of the literature. Field, in particular, presents the problems concerning the cells which may be involved in striated muscle regeneration. The role of the nuclei in the initial stages of muscle regeneration is indicated in studies of nuclear DNA concentrations by Lash, Holtzer & Swift (1957) and also in the study of radio-autographs of regenerating muscle, the nuclei of which had been labelled with tritiated thymidine (Bintliff & Walker, 1960). A further step now required is the study of the regeneration of the complex cytoplasmic structures of mammalian muscle fibres. Electron microscopy has so greatly increased our knowledge of the morphology of muscle (see reviews by Bennett, 1956, 1960) and our appreciation of the embryogenesis of muscle (Van Breeman, 1952; Hibbs, 1956; Muir, 1957; Ruska & Edwards, 1957; Gilev, 1958) that it is appropriate that this technique should be applied to the study of regenerating adult, striated muscle. Such a study by Hay (1959) using regenerating amblyostoma limbs has clarified the processes of muscle regeneration in these animals. The present electron microscopic study of mammalian regenerating muscle fibres has been undertaken using experimental techniques similar to those employed in earlier investigations (Allbrook & Aitken, 1951; Allbrook, 1952).
