High-luminosity particle collider experiments such as the ones planned at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider require ever-greater vertexing precision of the tracking detectors, necessitating reductions in the material budget of the detectors. Traditionally, the fractional radiation length (x/X-0) of detectors is either estimated using known properties of the constituent materials, or measured in dedicated runs of the final detector. In this paper, we present a method of direct measurement of the material budget of a CMS prototype module designed for the Phase-2 upgrade of the CMS detector using a 40-65 MeV positron beam. A total of 630 million events were collected at the Paul Scherrer Institut PiE1 experimental area using a three-plane telescope consisting of the prototype module as the central plane, surrounded by two MALTA monolithic pixel detectors. Fractional radiation lengths were extracted from scattering angle distributions using the Highland approximation for multiple scattering. A statistical technique recovered runs suffering from trigger desynchronisation, and several corrections were introduced to compensate for local inefficiencies related to geometric and beam shape constraints. Two regions of the module were surveyed and yielded average x/X-0 values of (0.72 +/- 0.05)% and (0.95 +/- 0.09)%, which are compatible with empirical estimates for these regions computed from known material properties of 0.753% and 0.892%, respectively. Two types of higher-granularity maps of the fractional radiation length were produced, subdivided either into rectangular regions of uniform size, or polygonal-shaped regions of uniform material composition. The results bode well for the CMS Phase-2 upgrade modules, which will play a key role in the minimisation of the material of the upgraded detector.
The Large Hadron Collider at CERN will undergo an upgrade in order to increase its luminosity to 7.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . The increased luminosity during this High-Luminosity running phase, starting around 2029, means a higher rate of proton-proton interactions, hence a larger ionizing dose and particle fluence for the detectors. The current tracking system of the CMS experiment will be fully replaced in order to cope with the new operating conditions. Prototype planar pixel sensors for the CMS Inner Tracker with square 50 μm × 50 μm and rectangular 100 μm × 25 μm pixels read out by the RD53A chip were characterized in the lab and at the DESY-II testbeam facility in order to identify designs that meet the requirements of CMS during the High-Luminosity running phase. A spatial resolution of approximately 3.4 μm (2 μm) is obtained using the modules with 50 μm × 50 μm (100 μm × 25 μm) pixels at the optimal angle of incidence before irradiation. After irradiation to a 1 MeV neutron equivalent fluence of Φ eq = 5.3 × 10 15 cm -2 , a resolution of 9.4 μm is achieved at a bias voltage of 800 V using a module with 50 μm × 50 μm pixel size. All modules retain a hit efficiency in excess of 99% after irradiation to fluences up to 2.1 × 10 16 cm -2 . Further studies of the electrical properties of the modules, especially crosstalk, are also presented in this paper.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will undergo major upgrades to increase the instantaneous luminosity up to 5–7.5×10 34 cm -2 s -1 . This High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) will deliver a total of 3000–4000 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13–14 TeV. To cope with these challenging environmental conditions, the strip tracker of the CMS experiment will be upgraded using modules with two closely-spaced silicon sensors to provide information to include tracking in the Level-1 trigger selection. This paper describes the performance, in a test beam experiment, of the first prototype module based on the final version of the CMS Binary Chip front-end ASIC before and after the module was irradiated with neutrons. Results demonstrate that the prototype module satisfies the requirements, providing efficient tracking information, after being irradiated with a total fluence comparable to the one expected through the lifetime of the experiment.
An amplitude analysis of flavor-untagged B-s(0) -> J=psi p (p) over bar decays is performed using a sample of 797 +/- 31 decays reconstructed with the LHCb detector. The data, collected in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). Evidence for a new structure in the J=psi p and J=psi(p) over bar systems with a mass of 4337(-4-2)(+7+2) MeV and a width of 29(-12-14)(+26+14) MeV is found, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, with a significance in the range of 3.1 to 3.7 sigma, depending on the assigned J(P) hypothesis.
A bstract The production cross-section of the χ c 1 (3872) state relative to the ψ (2 S ) meson is measured using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0 and 5.4 fb − 1 , respectively. The two mesons are reconstructed in the J/ψπ + π − final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt χ c 1 (3872) to ψ (2 S ) production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity, y , of the χ c 1 (3872) and ψ (2 S ) states, in the kinematic range 4 < p T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 . 0 < y < 4 . 5. The prompt ratio is found to increase with p T , independently of y . For the prompt component, the double ratio of the χ c 1 (3872) and ψ (2 S ) production cross-sections between 13 and 8 TeV is observed to be consistent with unity, independent of p T and centre-of-mass energy.

The data, collected in proton-proton collisions between 2011 and 2018, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. Evidence for a new structure in the J/ψp and J/ψp[over ¯] systems with a mass of 4337_{-4}^{+7} _{-2}^{+2} MeV and a width of 29_{-12}^{+26} _{-14}^{+14} MeV is found, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, with a significance in the range of 3.1 to 3.7σ, depending on the assigned J^{P} hypothesis.
A data sample collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9~{\rm fb}^{-1}$, is used to measure $CP$ observables in $B^\pm \to D h^\pm$ decays, where $h^{(\prime)}$ is either a kaon or a pion, and the neutral $D$ meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states $K^\pm \pi^\mp \pi^0$, $\pi^\pm \pi^\mp \pi^0$, and $K^\pm K^\mp \pi^0$. The most suppressed of these modes, $B^\pm \to [\pi^\pm K^\mp \pi^0]_D K^\pm$, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations and constraints on the CKM angle $\gamma$ are calculated from the combination of the measurements.
Abstract A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1 is used to measure eleven CP violation observables in B ± → Dh ± decays, where h is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral D meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K ± π ∓ π 0; π + π − π 0; K + K − π 0 and the suppressed π ± K ∓ π 0 combination. The mode where a large CP asymmetry is expected, B ± → [π ± K ∓ π 0] D K ± , is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B ± → [K ± π ∓ π 0] D K ± , is R ADS(K) = (1.27 ± 0.16 ± 0.02) × 10 −2. Evidence for a large CP asymmetry is also seen: A ADS(K) = −0.38 ± 0.12 ± 0.02. Constraints on the CKM angle γ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.
AbstractUsing a data sample of $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {TeV}$$ s = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2017 and 2018 with an integrated luminosity of $$103\text {~fb}^{-1}$$ 103 fb - 1 , the $$\text {B}^{0}_{\mathrm{s}} \rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})\text {K}_\mathrm{S}^{0}$$ B s 0 → ψ ( 2S ) K S 0 and $$\text {B}^{0} \rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})\text {K}_\mathrm{S}^{0} \uppi ^+\uppi ^-$$ B 0 → ψ ( 2S ) K S 0 π + π - decays are observed with significances exceeding 5 standard deviations. The differential cross-section of prompt inclusive production of long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions is measured using a data sample recorded by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of ${\sqrt{s} = 13\,\mathrm{TeV}}$. The data sample, collected with an unbiased trigger, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of ${5.4\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}}$. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the ranges ${p_\mathrm{T} \in [0.08, 10)\,\mathrm{GeV}\,c^{-1}}$ and ${\eta \in [2.0, 4.8)}$ and is determined separately for positively and negatively charged particles. The results are compared with predictions from various hadronic-interaction models.
The multihadron decays $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → D+pπ−π− and $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → D*+pπ−π− are observed in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1, collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV by the LHCb detector. Using the decay $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → $$ {\Lambda}_c^{+} $$ π+π−π− as a normalisation channel, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^{+}p{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^{-}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_b^0\to {\Lambda}_c^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^{-}\right)}\times \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {K}^{-}{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{+}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_c^0\to {pK}^{-}{\pi}^{-}\right)}=\left(5.35\pm 0.21\pm 0.16\right)\%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The ratio of branching fractions for the $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → D*+pπ−π− and $$ {\Lambda}_b^0 $$ → D+pπ−π− decays is found to be $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^{\ast +}p{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^{-}\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left({\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^{+}p{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^{-}\right)}\times \left(\mathcal{B}\left({D}^{\ast +}\to {D}^{+}{\pi}^0\right)+\mathcal{B}\left({D}^{\ast +}\to {D}^{+}\gamma \right)\right)=\left(61.3\pm 4.3\pm 4.0\right)\%. $$
A bstract A precision measurement of the Z boson production cross-section at $$ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $$ s = 13 TeV in the forward region is presented, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb − 1 . The production cross-section is measured using Z → μ + μ − events within the fiducial region defined as pseudorapidity 2 . 0 < η < 4 . 5 and transverse momentum p T > 20 GeV /c for both muons and dimuon invariant mass 60 < M μμ < 120 GeV /c 2 . The integrated cross-section is determined to be $$ \sigma \left(Z\to {\mu}^{+}{\mu}^{-}\right)=196.4\pm 0.2\pm 1.6\pm 3.9\ \mathrm{pb}, $$ σZ→μ+μ−=196.4±0.2±1.6±3.9pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. The measured results are in agreement with theoretical predictions within uncertainties.
A measurement of the lifetimes of the Ω0 c and Ξ 0 c baryons is reported using proton– proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment. The Ω0 c and Ξ0 c baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the pK−K−π+ final state. The Ω0 c lifetime is measured to be 276.5± 13.4± 4.4± 0.7 fs, and the Ξ0 c lifetime is measured to be 148.0± 2.3± 2.2± 0.2 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the D0 lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter Ω0 c lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the Ω0 c lifetime. Abstract Searches for rare $$ {B}_s^0 $$ B s 0 and B0 decays into four muons are performed using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1. Direct decays and decays via light scalar and J/ψ resonances are considered. No evidence for the six decays searched for is found and upper limits at the 95% confidence level on their branching fractions ranging between 1.8 × 10−10 and 2.6 × 10−9 are set.

The resulting branching fraction ratios, measured for the first time, correspond to $${\mathcal {B}}(\text {B}^{0}_{\mathrm{s}} \rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})K_\mathrm{S}^{0})/{\mathcal {B}}(\text {B}^{0}\rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})K_\mathrm{S}^{0}) = (3.33 \pm 0.69 (\text {stat})\, \pm 0.11\,(\text {syst}) \pm 0.34\,(f_{\mathrm{s}}/f_{\mathrm{d}})) \times 10^{-2}$$ and $${\mathcal {B}}(\text {B}^{0} \rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})\text {K}_\mathrm{S}^{0} \uppi ^{+} \uppi ^{-})/ {\mathcal {B}}(\text {B}^{0} \rightarrow \uppsi (\text {2S})\text {K}^{0}_{\mathrm{S}}) = 0.480 \pm 0.013\,(\text {stat}) \pm 0.032\,(\text {syst})$$ , where the last uncertainty in the first ratio is related to the uncertainty in the ratio of production cross sections of $$\hbox {B}^{0}_{\mathrm{s}}$$ and $$\hbox {B}^{0}$$ mesons, $$f_{\mathrm{s}}/f_{\mathrm{d}}$$ .
Using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 collected with the LHCb detector, seven decay modes of the B_c^+ meson into a J / ψ or ψ(2S) meson and three charged hadrons, kaons or pions, are studied. The decays B_c^+ → (ψ(2S) → J / ψπ + π − )π + , B_c^+ → ψ(2S)π + π − π + , B_c^+ → J / ψK + π − π + and B_c^+ → J / ψK + K − K + are observed for the first time, and evidence for the B_c^+ → ψ(2S)K + K − π + , decay is found, where J / ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in their dimuon decay modes. The ratios of branching fractions between the different B_c^+ decays are reported as well as the fractions of the decays proceeding via intermediate resonances. The results largely support the factorisation approach used for a theoretical description of the studied decays.
Abstract A search for the decay B 0 → ϕμ + μ − is performed using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. No evidence for the B 0 → ϕμ + μ − decay is found and an upper limit on the branching fraction, excluding the ϕ and charmonium regions in the dimuon spectrum, of 4.4 × 10 −3 at a 90% credibility level, relative to that of the B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → ϕμ + μ − decay, is established. Using the measured B s 0 $$ {B}_s^0 $$ → ϕμ + μ − branching fraction and assuming a phase-space model, the absolute branching fraction of the decay B 0 → ϕμ + μ − in the full q 2 range is determined to be less than 3.2 × 10 −9 at a 90% credibility level.
