Three moderate earthquakes with a maximum intensity IV were felt in the Kribi region in September 1987. Though there were no major damages reported, the phenomenon appeared quite strange to the local authorities and population. Two years later, in July 1989 another light earthquake was felt in the area. This prompted the analysis of the causes of that recent activity which is thought to be associated to the mobile zone/Congo craton margin of Central Africa.

U-Pb dating of zircons from a volcano-sedimentary schist, Sm-Nd dating of two samples of these schists and Rb-Sr dating of one orthogneiss and one anatectic granite of the Lom region (Eastern Cameroon) respectively give the following results: a concordia with intercepts at 709 + 19/-18 and 2,472 + 104/-111 Ma, Nd model ages of 1,400 and 1,340 Ma with epsilon-Nd0 of -7 and -7.2, and whole-rock isochrons at 614 +/- 41 Ma (R(i) = 0.7670) and 621 +/- 15 (R(i) = 0.7137). These results lead to the following conclusions: 1) the Lom Series and orthogneisses are Upper Proterozoic in age and 2) the Upper Proterozoic evolution is characterized by the importance of crustal imprint.

Dans la région de Garoua, au Nord Cameroun, des buttes témoins de quelques dizaines de km2 reposent en discordance fondamentale sur le socle précambrien. Elles représentent les restes, en relief inversé, de grabens d'âge ordovicien supérieur-dévonien inférieur, orientés WNW-ESE à NW-SE, remplis par une séquence sédimentaire et volcanique.

The Yaoundé series is composed of low to high-grade garnet-bearing schists and gneisses belonging to the Pan-African North-equatorial fold belt.

Les études pétrologiques et structurales des paragneiss de haute pression dans la région de Yaounde ont permis aux auteurs de conclure que ces roches ont été impliquées dans une tectonique tangentielle majeure en condition catazonale. Ces gneiss ont été datés à 570 ± 30 Ma (Rb/Sr). Cette déformation doit s’intégrer dans l’évolution globale de cette portion de la chaîne pan-africaine qui s’étend de la République Centrafricaine au Brésil.
