The possibility of obtaining ternary calcium-sodium-potassium alloy was studied; the mechanism of electrode processes and the composition of anodic gases at anodes prepared from various materials were studied in electrolysis of molten nitrate mixture.
Data from literature and experimental findings on the cathodic reduction of oxygen and oxyanions in oxygen-containing melts are analyzed. It is shown that oxyanions participate in the discharge step directly, without a slow preceding chemical reaction. Consideration is given to the side effects, due to which traditional approaches erroneously conclude that the process in question involves a preceding step.
The possibility of preparation of calcium-lithium-potassium ternary alloy and the mechanism of electrode processes and composition of anode gases in electrolysis of a melt of 15 wt. % calcium nitrate, 23% lithium nitrate, and 62% potassium nitrate (the mixture melts at 117.4-degrees-C) were investigated.
