A systematic study of nonlocal and size effects on the energy transfer of a dipole (e.g. a molecule or a quantum dot) induced by the proximity of a metal slab is presented. Nonlocal effects are accounted for using the hydrodynamic model (HDM). We derive a general relation that connects the energy transfer rate to the linear charge density-density response function of the slab. This function is explicitly evaluated for the HDM and the local Drude model. We show that a thin metal slab can support a series of higher-frequency surface plasma wave (SPW) modes in addition to the normal SPW modes thanks to the nonlocal effects. These modes markedly alter the response and the energy transfer process, as revealed in the structure of the energy transfer rate in the parameter space. Our findings are important for applications such as the recently developed metal-induced energy transfer imaging, which relies on accurate modeling of the energy transfer rate.

Low power integrated compact sensors for applications such as IoT and arrayed biomedical sensors are essential for today’s technology. However, security is not incorporated in these sensors and are typically added after implementation using digital hardware or software. In this paper, we demonstrate a temperature to time sensing system with a discrete level encryption process using real-time analog circuitry and minimal processing power. The encryption uses the chaotic Lorenz attractor system. The temperature sensor, implemented in 130 nm technology, consumes 195 nW with 0.5 V power supply. The encryption module is simulated in Simulink and implemented at the board level using discrete components on a printed circuit board. Experimental results show that the envisioned chaotic system is capable of accurately encrypting and decrypting the digital temperature signal.

Martin Dubois's Gerard Manley Hopkins and the Poetry of Religious Experience is a clear-sighted and necessary study that examines Hopkins's poetry as it springs from, engages with, and negotiates his quotidian religious experience and beliefs, "the promise and difficulty of human striving for God in day-to-day life" (171). While it engages carefully and respectfully with other critics, the book's approach is predicated upon incisive critiques that disclose powerful and pervasive assumptions that have shaped Hopkins studies over the past century. Such analyses not only facilitate the author's own original study, but also prepare the ground for further renewals of the field by other scholars. Biographies of Hopkins have often described a tragic trajectory of increasing alienation, misunderstanding, and neglect, which indeed continued posthumously after his death in 1889. Since the first collection of his poems appeared in 1918, secular literary critics and Roman Catholic commentators alike have focused upon the ostensibly mature poetry of the late 1870s, principally "The Wreck of the Deutschland" (written 1875–76, published 1918) and the nature poems, and countered the entropic unraveling of his strands of being with triumphalist assertions of a transcendent private metaphysic. Such commentaries can appear to parallel the resurrectionary formula of Hopkins's "Felix Randal" (1880) (the awkwardness of which is glossed by this study), in which the sad end is insistently supplanted by, or at least quarantined from, Hopkins in his happy and most authentic prime. Gerard Manley Hopkins and the Poetry of Religious Experience opens with Hopkins's final poem "To R.B." (written 1889, published 1918). By focusing on individual faith not as transcendence but as difficult temporal experience, this study precipitates the return of the repressed in Hopkins studies, highlighting its guiding assumptions, its residual sentimentalism, by redressing "an imbalance in what we appreciate of [his poetry]" (5). It brings forward and gives due consideration to unjustly neglected and occasionally maligned texts, as well as mobilizes insightful new readings of the canonical poetry. The study accordingly emphasizes Hopkins's asceticism rather than his sacramentalism, his "interest in pain" and in martyrdom (108). It explores the often telling awkwardness of his poetic diction. It documents and discusses the disgust he expresses for what he regards as the misshapen and immoral English poor, his writings on soldiers, his reactionary politics, the awkward expressions of his sexual predilections, and the horrible suffering recorded in the sonnets of desolation. The study also variously complicates, adjusts, and refutes such abiding ideas of Hopkins as the hybrid "priest-poet" and "poet-priest" (7) and a "private poet" (4). [End Page 510] The poet's diction, the main reason for his notorious difficulty, is unapologetically recognized, usefully glossed, and demystified here. So, for instance, there are excellent discussions of his "clotted syntax" (155); the "encumbered expression [and] . . . awkwardnesses" deployed in the sonnet "That Nature is a Heraclitean Fire" (1888) as it functions "to reveal the unexpectedness of God's mercy" (36); the "farfetchedness of Hopkins's rhyming" (127); and "the aggressive newness of Hopkins's language" (60). Such a range of enlightening arguments allows entrance into his often desperate and difficult diction. The tensions with the prevailing religious cultures in which Hopkins found himself, such as the notorious charges of eccentricity made against some of his sermons, are here deftly and precisely historicized. So, too, is his reading of Duns Scotus, which is found not to be aberrant and singular in the way that Hopkins studies has long assumed it to be. The abiding influence upon the Catholic convert of Anglican and Tractarian registers of religious language, translation, and allusion are also nicely traced and contextualized by the book, and found to inflect poetry he wrote across his adult life. The communal contexts of Hopkins's individual religious experience are brought to the fore in decisive ways here; for instance, the Jesuit scholarly preoccupation with recusant martyrs as it informs and shapes the...
Two similar chaotic systems, when appropriately coupled, can synchronize their states. This fundamental phenomenon has paved the way to the use of chaos as a means to encrypt messages. Indeed, a transmitter can produce a chaotic signal to mask a plain message and a synchronized receiver can invert this procedure to recover the original message. The most simple implementations of this encryption technique are, however, vulnerable to return map attacks. Using a time-scaling factor to further obfuscate the modulation process, we provably gain immunity against a return map. This live demonstration showcases return map immune chaotic stream cipher in circuitry based on a Lorenz system. I. DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH Chaotic encryption aims at providing security through masking a plain text with a chaotic signal originated by a chaotic system that is highly sensitive to system parameters and initial conditions [1], [2]. Methods exist to use both discrete maps [3] and continuous system models [4]. This demonstration makes use of a scheme based on a continuous system. Specifically, it uses a Lorentz system model to mask a binary plain text message using a technique known as Chaotic Shift Keying (CSK). The main advantage of continuous methods is the use of a minimal amount of processing power to obtain the cipher text. The power consumption can be several orders of magnitude lower than the power consumption required by a microprocessor to implement a standard digital encryption technique. The demonstration setup consists of the transmitter circuits, receiver circuit, a decision making block, and laptop with custom control and interfacing software for display. II. VISITOR EXPERINECE In our study the base Lorenz system has the form:
"Free Play" in Poetry Daniel Brown (bio) A good poet once told me that when he sits down to write, he has nothing in mind (unless you count the knowledge that he's sitting down to write). If he's lucky, some words will emerge from this void. If he's doubly lucky, a subject will emerge from these words. If he's lucky cubed, he'll find the subject worth pursuing—at which point he'll have an incipient poem on, and in, his hands. If we're to take Robert Frost at his word (something one does at one's own risk), he too came to his writing desk—a lapboard, actually—with nothing in mind. A poem began as he said in a letter of 1916 to Louis Untermeyer, with only "a lump in the throat; a homesickness or a love sickness." In an achieved poem, "an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words." This might seem an unlikely account of how Frost actually got a poem going. When he started to write a certain well-known poem, did he really have a lump in his throat but not a birch in his head? In his 1939 essay "The Figure a Poem Makes," he in fact says something quite different about his poems' inceptions: that they begin with his "remembering something I didn't know I knew." They begin, that is to say, not with an emotion, as quoted in the first account, but with what comes after an emotion: a thought. So Frost was amenable, on some days anyway, to a poet's knowing something about a poem's content before he begins it. But he was adamant about what a poet shouldn't know in advance: how his poem was going to end. It was, as he said in "The Figure . . .," but "a trick poem and no poem at all if the best of it was thought of first and saved for the [End Page 304] last." A poem, rather, "must be a revelation, or a series of revelations, as much for the poet as for the reader." The idea that a poet should learn where his poem is going in the course of its getting there is a commonplace (if not a shibboleth) these days. The idea is often stated as such, as in the familiar writing workshop injunction to "let the poem tell you where it wants to go." Sometimes it's given a personal twist, as in James Merrill's saying he found it too boring to know a poem's destination ahead of time. Sometimes it's couched as a recommendation that the writer of a poem be passively, even Zen-ishly, receptive to impressions and inspirations as he or she goes along. Sometimes the idea is set within a larger theory of poetic creation, as in Richard Hugo's "Triggering Town" concept, with its dictum that "Your words . . . will generate your meanings." However it's presented, the idea is that a poem's path shouldn't be "thought of first," but should find its way in making its way. I hasten to say that I have no problem with this idea: how could I, given the many fine poems that have been written in accordance with it. But I don't think the idea is inviolable as a guide to a poem's creation. I think fine poems can be written even—maybe even especially—when something of their progress is known in advance. This view wouldn't seem to be widely held. In fact, when I try to think of poets I can cite in support of it, only two come to mind, though they're both worth attending to. One of them, Philip Larkin, said that if he didn't know the ending of a poem a third of the way into his writing of it, he'd toss the poem as a lost cause. My second witness would be seen by most as even more authoritative than Larkin, though what can be placed into evidence is not his testimony—he has nothing to say, pro or con, about knowing a poem's path...
The authors report on the realisation of an encryption process in real-time analogue circuitry using on-the-shelf components and minimal processing power. Self-synchronisation of two similar systems through a single shared state is a unique property of the chaotic Lorenz attractor system. In this process, the single parameters of the system are modulated to mask a message before transmitting securely through a single-shared state. However, these techniques are vulnerable to the return map attack. They show that time-scaling can further obfuscate the modulation process and improve return map attack immunity and demonstrate a fabricated printed circuit board implementation of the system.
A significant expansion of feral deer populations, most significantly sambar deer (Cervus unicolor Kerr), has been observed in the Alpine National Park (ANP) in eastern Victoria over the past decade. In particular, increasing signs of deer activity have been observed at higher elevations, which corresponds with observed increases in deer impacts on significant environmental assets including Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and Associated Fens (hereaf ter known as alpine peatlands), an endangered ecological community, listed under the Australian Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.
INTRODUCTION United States Constitution Day was birthed from the idea of establishing a day to recognize and celebrate American citizenship, and has evolved into a remembrance of the day that the Constitutional Convention signed the United States Constitution, September 17, 1787. Many Americans use this day to reflect on the rights granted to U.S. Citizens, the freedoms protected by the U.S. Constitution, and the visionary steps the delegates took throughout the summer of 1787 to secure lasting, founding principles for their fledgling new nation. Over 200 years later, the Congress of that same nation, now transformed dramatically by modern times, passed legislation concerning this date, stating u0027[e]ach educational institution that receives Federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution" (Civic Impulse, 2015). The University of Guam is one such institution, and during the Fall 2014 semester, graduate students from Dr. John Riverau0027s "Administrative Thought" class at the university were challenged to recognize U.S. Constitution Day in a creative, participatory way. Students would take part in conducting a short, non-invasive survey assessing Guam residentsu0027 familiarity with and knowledge of the United States Constitution. Results would be pitted against results given from a similar, nationwide survey found online, and presented in a functional, fashionable infographic. The annual survey is posted online at http://www.constitutionfacts.com and, while available to any web-user, offers to record and summate data only from residents of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (DC). The students found that this data set leaves out residents of the U.S. territories, including Guam, thus leaving out what could be some very interesting and revealing findings from a unique section of U.S. citizens. The students wanted to know, how would Guam residents fare? Which age group would score the highest? Which questions would most Guam residents answer incorrectly? The students further thought that both the authors and the users of the online survey might find our conclusions enlightening, perhaps provoking them to re-examine including a more complete, holistic set of the population in subsequent annual surveys. The students at least wanted to give Guam residents a chance for their voice to be heard in civic engagement, comparing and contrasting to the voices of others within the United States, and, in a way, extend "fair and equal representation" to Guamanians. METHODOLOGY To extend the survey to Guam residents, the students determined they would poll, to the greatest possible degree, a wide variety of the population (excluding minors). Their aim was 260 survey respondents; in all they polled 240. These respondents were co-workers, customers, friends, relatives, and other students; military service members, retirees, and civilians; selfemployed, Federal employees, local government employees, and private sector employees; of a variety of education levels and a host of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Questions covered civic topics such as: The Articles of Confederation, the role of Congress, the term length of presidents, rights of the accused, the countryu0027s first vice-president, the Bill of Rights, the Secretary of State, and electoral votes. Furthermore, the class discussed several questions theyu0027d add to augment the data to pit against the online survey. They found it prudent to ask respondentsu0027 age group (18-35, 36-50, or 51 and over), respondentsu0027 professional status (local government employee, Federal government employee, private sector employee, self-employed, student, or other), and highest level of education completed (elementary, secondary, undergraduate, or graduate and higher).
