Introduction: the lack of studies in Venezuela that demonstrate the importance of flies of medical interest as mechanical vectors of enteroparasites, motivated the realization of this crosssectional descriptive work, with intentional sample, where with plastic and ecological traps, adults of flies were captured. Materials and methods: the specimens were inactivated, to be classified by gender, washed with 0.85% saline, separated from the solution and then centrifuged 10 min at 3000 rpm, to later use the pellet, which was mounted between lamina and lamella to observe the sediment under a microscope. Results: 1.061 adults of flies were captured, which corresponded taxonomically to the genera: Phaenicia sp (29,2%), Blepharicnema splendens (6,4%), Cochliomyia hominivorax (3,8%), Musca domestica (3,4), Sarcophaga sp; (3%), Cochliomyia macellaria (2,5%) and the sum of other species (51,7%), such that from more than seven species of flies were able to identify the enteroparasites: Blastocystis sp, Endolimax nana, Entamoeba hartmanni, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, Entamoeba coli, Iodamoeba butschlii, Pentatrichomonas sp (Trichomonas sp), while the only helminths obtained were Uncinarias (Anquilostomideos). Conclusions: the enteroparasitic contamination of more than seven species of flies with seven species of enteroparasites diagnosed highlights the role of these dipterous transmitters in the cycle of enteric parasites.
This study examined attitudes about body image and racial identity among Black women at a predominately White college in the United States. We conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with 34 women about their school experiences, family, racial identity, self-esteem, and body image. We found that early childhood influences including family and school environment had profound impacts on their racial identity and body image. Through a qualitative analysis based in grounded theory, we found that participants' identification with White and/or Black culture produced levels of body satisfaction and a set of beauty ideals that generally corresponded to four racial identity groups: identification with White or Black culture, floating between both, or having a diverse self-identity.
In this study, we report the synthesis and biological evaluation of four 6- and 17-substituted progesterone derivatives (7-10). These compounds were prepared from the commercially available 17alpha-acetoxyprogesterone. The biological effect of these steroids was demonstrated in in vivo as well as in vitro experiments. In the in vivo experiments, we measured the activity of 6-10 on the weight of the prostate glands of gonadectomized hamsters treated with testosterone (T). For the studies in vitro, we determined the IC(50) value by measuring the concentration of steroidal derivative that inhibited 50% of the activity of 5alpha-reductase present in the human prostate. The results from this work indicated that compounds 6-9 significantly decreased the weight of the prostate as compared to testosterone-treated animals and this reduction of prostate weight was comparable to that produced by finasteride. Steroid 8 was the most effective of the tested compounds. However, compound 10 did not exhibit this capacity. On the other hand, 6-9 exhibited a high inhibitory activity for the human 5alpha-reductase enzyme with IC(50) values of 10, 70, 22, and 19 nM, respectively. However, 10 was not effective for the inhibition of 5alpha-reductase activity. In conclusion, the compounds that contained the acetate ester moiety in the molecule (6, 7, 8, and 9) inhibited the activity of 5alpha-reductase and decreased the weight of the prostate. Nevertheless, the double bond in ring B seems to diminish the inhibitory potency (7 and 9), since 6, which does not possess a double bond at C-6, had the highest inhibitory activity (the lowest IC(50) value).
