Let S be a compact surface of genus >= 2 equipped with a metric that is flat everywhere except at finitely many cone points with angles greater than 2 pi. We examine the geodesic flow on S and prove local product structure for a wide class of equilibrium states. Using this, we establish the Bernoulli property for these systems. We also establish local product structure for a similar class of equilibrium states for geodesic flows on rank 1, nonpositively curved manifolds.
We extend a result of Lopes and Thieullen [Sub-actions for Anosov flows. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 25 (2) (2005), 605–628] on sub-actions for smooth Anosov flows to the setting of geodesic flow on locally CAT( $-1$ ) spaces. This allows us to use arguments originally due to Croke and Dairbekov to prove a volume rigidity theorem for some interesting locally CAT( $-1$ ) spaces, including quotients of Fuchsian buildings and surface amalgams.

Consider a compact surface of genus $\geq 2$ equipped with a metric that is flat everywhere except at finitely many cone points with angles greater than $2\pi$. Following the technique in the work of Burns, Climenhaga, Fisher, and Thompson, we prove that sufficiently regular potential functions have unique equilibrium states if the singular set does not support the full pressure. Moreover, we show that the pressure gap holds for any potential which is locally constant on a neighborhood of the singular set. Finally, we establish that the corresponding equilibrium states have the $K$-property, and closed regular geodesics equidistribute.
We prove entropy rigidity for finite volume strictly convex projective manifolds in dimensions $$\ge 3$$ , generalizing the work of [1] to the finite volume setting. The rigidity theorem uses the techniques of Besson, Courtois, and Gallot’s entropy rigidity theorem. It implies uniform lower bounds on the volume of any finite volume strictly convex projective manifold in dimensions $$\ge 3$$ .
We prove that the geodesic flow on a compact locally CAT (1) space has the weak specification property, and give various applications. We show that every Holder potential on the space of geodesics has a unique equilibrium state. We establish the equidistribution of weighted periodic orbits and the large deviations principle for all such measures. The thermodynamic results are proved for the class of expansive flows with weak specification.
We prove that the geodesic flow on a locally CAT(-1) metric space which is compact, or more generally convex cocompact with non-elementary fundamental group, can be coded by a suspension flow over an irreducible shift of finite type with Hölder roof function. This is achieved by showing that the geodesic flow is a metric Anosov flow, and obtaining Hölder regularity of return times for a special class of geometrically constructed local cross-sections to the flow. We obtain a number of strong results on the dynamics of the flow with respect to equilibrium measures for Hölder potentials. In particular, we prove that the Bowen-Margulis measure is Bernoulli except for the exceptional case that all closed orbit periods are integer multiples of a common constant. We show that our techniques also extend to the geodesic flow associated to a projective Anosov representation, which verifies that the full power of symbolic dynamics is available in that setting.
For a closed, strictly convex projective manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ that admits a hyperbolic structure, we show that the ratio of Hilbert volume to hyperbolic volume is bounded below by a constant that depends only on dimension. We also show that for such spaces, if topological entropy of the geodesic flow goes to zero, the volume must go to infinity. These results follow from adapting Besson--Courtois--Gallot's entropy rigidity result to Hilbert geometries.
We prove that for compact, non-contractible, one dimensional geodesic spaces, a version of the marked length spectrum conjecture holds. For a compact one dimensional geodesic space X, we define a subspace Conv(X). When X is non-contractible, we show that X deformation retracts to Conv(X). If two such spaces X, Y have the same marked length spectrum, we prove that Conv(X) and Conv(Y) are isometric to each other.
We consider finite $2$-complexes $X$ that arise as quotients of Fuchsian buildings by subgroups of the combinatorial automorphism group, which we assume act freely and cocompactly. We show that locally CAT($-1$) metrics on $X$, which are piecewise hyperbolic and satisfy a natural non-singularity condition at vertices, are marked length spectrum rigid within certain classes of negatively curved, piecewise Riemannian metrics on $X$. As a key step in our proof, we show that the marked length spectrum function for such metrics determines the volume of $X$.
This paper presents quantitative shrinking target results for rotations and interval exchange transformations. To do this a quantitative version of a unique ergodicity criterion of Boshernitzan is established.
We study closed non-positively curved Riemannian manifolds $M$ which admit `fat $k$-flats': that is, the universal cover $\tilde M$ contains a positive radius neighborhood of a $k$-flat on which the sectional curvatures are identically zero. We investigate how the fat $k$-flats affect the cardinality of the collection of closed geodesics. Our first main result is to construct rank $1$ non-positively curved manifolds with a fat $1$-flat which corresponds to a twisted cylindrical neighborhood of a geodesic on $M$. As a result, $M$ contains an embedded closed geodesic with a flat neighborhood, but $M$ nevertheless has only countably many closed geodesics. Such metrics can be constructed on finite covers of arbitrary odd-dimensional finite volume hyperbolic manifolds. Our second main result is to prove a closing theorem for fat flats, which implies that a manifold $M$ with a fat $k$-flat contains an immersed, totally geodesic $k$-dimensional flat closed submanifold. This guarantees the existence of uncountably many closed geodesics when $k \geq 2$. Finally, we collect results on thermodynamic formalism for the class of manifolds considered in this paper.
Let $R_\alpha$ be an irrational rotation of the circle, and code the orbit of any point $x$ by whether $R_\alpha^i(x)$ belongs to $[0,\alpha)$ or $[\alpha,1)$ -- this produces a Sturmian sequence. A point is undetermined at step $j$ if its coding up to time $j$ does not determine its coding at time $j+1$. We prove a pair of results on the asymptotic frequency of a point being undetermined, for full measure sets of $\alpha$ and $x$.
Combining several previously known arguments, we prove marked length spectrum rigidity for surfaces with nonpositively curved Riemannian metrics away from a finite set of cone-type singularities with cone angles $>2\pi$. With an additional condition, we can weaken the requirement on one metric to `no conjugate points.'
We prove some results on the behavior of infinite sums of the form ∑ f ◦ T(x) 1 n , where T : S → S is an irrational circle rotation and f is a mean-zero function on S. In particular, we show that for a certain class of functions f , there are Liouville α for which this sum diverges everywhere and Liouville α for which the sum converges everywhere.
Abstract We prove that a closed surface with a CAT(κ) metric has Hausdorff dimension = 2, and that there are uniform upper and lower bounds on the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure of small metric balls. We also discuss a connection between this uniformity condition and some results on the dynamics of the geodesic flow for such surfaces. Finally,we give a short proof of topological entropy rigidity for geodesic flow on certain CAT(−1) manifolds.
The ICM 2010 satellite conference 'Geometry, Topology and Dynamics in Negative Curvature' afforded an excellent opportunity to discuss various aspects of this fascinating interdisciplinary subject in which methods and techniques from geometry, topology, and dynamics often interact in novel and interesting ways. Containing ten survey articles written by some of the leading experts in the field, this proceedings volume provides an overview of important recent developments relating to negative curvature. Topics covered include homogeneous dynamics, harmonic manifolds, the Atiyah Conjecture, counting circles and arcs, and hyperbolic buildings. Each author pays particular attention to the expository aspects, making the book particularly useful for graduate students and mathematicians interested in transitioning from other areas via the common theme of negative curvature.
We survey results on compact Clifford-Klein forms of homogeneous spaces, with a focus on recent contributions and organized around approaches via topology, geometry and dynamics. In addition, we survey results on moduli spaces of compact forms.
We consider finite 2-dimensional polyhedral complexes, equipped with piecewise non-positively curved, locally CAT(0) metrics. We give conditions on the complex X that ensure that its fundamental group contains a surface subgroup. Concrete examples covered by our methods include compact quotients of sufficiently thick Fuchsian buildings, where the lattice acts freely and the quotient has at least two vertices.
