A study of prompt Xi(+)(c) production in proton-lead collisions is performed with the LHCb experiment at a centerof-mass energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV in 2016 in pPb and Pbp collisions with an estimated integrated luminosity of approximately 12.5 and 17.4 nb(-1), respectively. The Xi(+)(c) roduction cross section, as well as the Xi(+)(c) to Lambda(+)(c) production cross-section ratio, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity and compared to the latest theory predictions. The forward-backward asymmetry is also measured as a function of the Xi(+)(c) ransverse momentum. The results provide strong constraints on theoretical calculation and are a unique input for hadronization studies in different collision systems.
The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all -software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all -software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. This scheme required a complete revision of the computing model and rewriting of the experiment's software.
The decay B- -> Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar K--(c)- is studied in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment. In the Lambda K-+(c)- system, the Xi(c)(2930)(0) state observed at the BABAR and Belle experiments is resolved into two narrower states, Xi(c)(2923)(0) and Xi(c)(2939)(0), whose masses and widths are measured to be m(Xi(c)(2930)(0) = 2924.5 +/- 0.4 +/- 1.1 Mev, m Xi(c)(2930)(0)) = 2938.5 +/- 0.9 +/- 2.3 Mev, Gamma(Xi(c)(2930)(0)) = 4.8 +/- 0.9 +/- 1.5 MeV, Gamma(Xi(c)(2930)(0) - 11.0 +/- 1.9 +/- 7.5 MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a prompt Lambda K-+(c)- sample. Evidence of a new Xi(c)(2930)(0) state is found with a local significance of 3.8 sigma, whose mass and width are measured to be 2881.8 +/- 3.1 +/- 8.5 MeV and 12.4 +/- 5.3 +/- 5.8 MeV, respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode Xi(c)(2930)(0) -> Lambda K-+(c) is found with a significance of 3.7 sigma. The relative branching fraction of B- -> Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda) over bar K--(c)- with respect to the B- -> D+D-K- decay is measured to be 2.36 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.25, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from the branching fractions of charm hadron decays.
The first observation of the B-s(0) -> D*+ D*- decay and the measurement of its branching ratio relative to the B-0 -> D*+ D*(-) decay are presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV between 2011 and 2018. The decay is observed with more than 10 standard deviations and the time-integrated ratio of branching fractions is determined to be [GRAPHICS] . where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty of the fragmentation fraction ratio f(s)/f(d). The B-s(0) -> D*(+) D*(-) branching fraction is calculated to be [GRAPHICS] . where the fourth uncertainty is due to the B-0 -> D*(+) D*(-) branching fraction. These results are calculated using the average B-s(0) meson lifetime in simulation. Correction factors are reported for scenarios where either a purely heavy or a purely light B-s(0) eigenstate is considered.
The production of prompt D0 mesons in proton-lead collisions in both the forward and backward rapidity regions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of √sNN=8.16 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment. The nuclear modification factor of prompt D0 mesons is determined as a function of the transverse momentum pT, and the rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass frame y∗. In the forward rapidity region, significantly suppressed production with respect to pp collisions is measured, which provides significant constraints on models of nuclear parton distributions and hadron production down to the very low Bjorken-x region of ∼10−5. In the backward rapidity region, a suppression with a significance of 2.0–3.8 standard deviations compared to parton distribution functions in a nuclear environment expectations is found in the kinematic region of pT>6 GeV/c and −3.25
An amplitude analysis of B0 -> J=psi phi K0S decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb-1, collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Evidence with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations of a structure in the J=psi K0S system, named T theta psi s1o4000 thorn 0, is seen, with its mass and width measured to be 3991 thorn 12 thorn 9 -10 -17 MeV=c2 and 105 thorn 29 thorn 17 -25 -23 MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The T theta psi s1 o4000 thorn 0 state is likely to be the isospin partner of the T theta psi s1 o4000 thorn thorn state, previously observed in the J=psi K thorn system of the B thorn -> J=psi phi K thorn decay. When isospin symmetry for the charged and neutral T theta psi s1 o4000 thorn states is assumed, the signal significance increases to 5.4 standard deviations.
A measurement of D ^0 meson production by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The production of D ^0 mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on a gaseous neon target at rest, corresponding to a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of √(s_NN) = 68.5 GeV . The sum of the D ^0 and D^0 production cross-section in pNe collisions in the centre-of-mass rapidity range y^⋆∈ [-2.29, 0] is found to be σ _D^0^y^⋆∈ [-2.29, 0] = 48.2 ± 0.3 ± 4.5 b/nucleon where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The D ^0-D^0 production asymmetry is also evaluated and suggests a trend towards negative values at large negative y^⋆ . The considered models do not account precisely for all the features observed in the LHCb data, but theoretical predictions including 1 % intrinsic charm and 10 % recombination contributions better describe the data than the other models considered.
Two new excited states, S2c(3185)0 and S2c(3327)0, are observed in the E thorn c K- invariant-mass spectrum using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb-1. Five previously observed excited S20c states are confirmed, namely S2c(3000)0, S2c(3050)0, S2c(3065)0, S2c(3090)0, and S2c(3119)0. The masses and widths of these seven states are measured with the highest precision to date.
The ratio of branching fractions of B-c(+) -> B-s(0)pi(+) and B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) decays is measured with proton-proton collision data of a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV. The data were collected with the LHCb experiment during 2016-2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1). The B-s(0) mesons are reconstructed via the decays B-s(0) -> J/psi phi and B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+). The ratio of branching fractions is measured to be B(B-c(+) -> B-s(0)pi(+))/B(B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+)) = 91 +/- 10 +/- 8 +/- 3 where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the knowledge of the branching fractions of the intermediate state decays.
Evidence for the decays B-0 -> (D) over bar (0)phi and B-0 -> (D) over bar (*0) phi is reported with a significance of 3.6 sigma and 4.3 sigma, respectively. The analysis employs pp collision data at centre-of-mass energies root s = 7, 8 and 13TeV collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). The branching fractions are measured to be B(B-0 -> (D) over bar (0)phi) = (7.7 +/- 2.1 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.7) x 10(-7), B(B-0 -> (D) over bar (*0)phi) = (2.2 +/- 05 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.2) x 10(-6). In these results, the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third is related to the branching fraction of the B-0 -> (D) over bar K-0(+) K- decay, used for normalisation. By combining the branching fractions of the decays B-0 -> (D) over bar ((*)0)phi and B-0 -> (D) over bar ((*)0)omega, the omega-phi mixing angle delta is constrained to be tan(2)delta = (3.6 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.4) x 10(-3), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. An updated measurement of the branching fractions of the B-s(0) -> (D) over bar ((*)0).phi decays, which can be used to determine the CKM angle gamma, leads to B(B-s(0) -> (D) over bar (0)phi) = (2.30 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.11 +/- 0.20) x 10(-5), B(B-s(0) -> (D) over bar (*0)phi) = (3.17 +/- 0.16 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.27) x 10(-5).
A first search for the lepton-flavour violating decays B-0 -> K*0 tau(+/-)mu -/+ is presented. The analysis is performed using a sample of proton-proton collision data, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13TeV between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). No significant signal is observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be B(B-0 -> K*0 tau(+)mu(-)) < 1.0 (1.2) x 10(-5) and B(B-0 -> K*0 tau(-)mu(+)) < 8.2 (9.8) x 10(-6) at the 90% (95%) confidence level.
Abstract The first measurement of $${{J}/\psi }$$ J / ψ and $${{D}} ^0$$ D 0 production in PbNe collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is reported. The production of $${{J}/\psi }$$ J / ψ and $${{D}} ^0$$ D 0 mesons is studied with a beam of lead ions with an energy of 2.5 $$\,\text {TeV}$$ TeV per nucleon colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle \text {NN}}} =68.5\,\text {GeV} $$ s NN = 68.5 GeV . The $${{J}/\psi }$$ J / ψ / $${{D}} ^0$$ D 0 production cross-section ratio is studied as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum and collision centrality. These data are compared with measurements from $$p\text {Ne}$$ p Ne collisions at the same energy and show no difference in the observed $${{J}/\psi }$$ J / ψ suppression trend when comparing $$p\text {Ne}$$ p Ne and PbNe peripheral collisions with PbNe central collisions.
Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a Z boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 < pT < 100 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range 2.5 < ? < 4. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb(-1). Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.
We report the observation of charmless hadronic decays of charged B mesons to the final state K{+}K{-}pi{+}. Using a data sample of 347.5 fb{-1} collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector, we observe 429+/-43 signal events with a significance of 9.6sigma. We measure the inclusive branching fraction B(B{+}-->K{+}K{-}pi{+})=[5.0+/-0.5(stat)+/-0.5(syst)]x10{-6}. Inspection of the Dalitz plot of signal candidates shows a broad structure peaking near 1.5 GeV/c{2} in the K+K- invariant mass distribution. We find the direct CP asymmetry to be consistent with zero.
A search for K-S(L)(0) -> mu(+) mu(-) mu(+) mu(-) decays is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb(-1). No evidence for signal is found. The 90% confidence level upper limits are the first set for both decays and are B(K-S(0)) -> mu(+) mu(-) mu(+) mu(-)) < 5.1 x 10(-12) and B(K-L(0))-> mu(+) mu(-) mu(+) mu(-)) < 2.3 x 10(-9).
The very rare D ^* (2007)^0→μ ^+μ ^- decay is searched for by analysing B ^-→π ^-μ ^+μ ^- decays. The analysis uses a sample of beauty mesons produced in proton–proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb ^-1 . The signal signature corresponds to simultaneous peaks in the μ ^+μ ^- and π ^-μ ^+μ ^- invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the decay at ℬ(D ^* (2007)^0→μ ^+μ ^- ) < 2.6× 10^-8 at 90% confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of D ^* (2007)^0→μ ^+μ ^- decays and the most stringent limit on D ^* (2007)^0 decays to leptonic final states. The analysis is the first search for a rare charm-meson decay exploiting production via beauty decays.
Using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7 fb(-1), the lifetime of the light B-s(0) mass eigenstate, tau(L), is measured using the B-s(0) -> J/psi eta decay mode to be tau(L) = 1.445 +/- 0.016(stat) +/- 0.008(syst) ps. A combination of this result with a previous LHCb analysis using an independent dataset corresponding to 3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity gives tau(L) = 1.452 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.007 +/- 0.002 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second due to the uncorrelated part of the systematic uncertainty and the third due to the correlated part of the systematic uncertainty.
Abstract The very rare $${{D} ^*} (2007)^0\!\rightarrow {\mu ^+\mu ^-} $$ D ∗ ( 2007 ) 0 → μ + μ - decay is searched for by analysing $${{{B} ^-}} \!\rightarrow {{\pi } ^-} {\mu ^+\mu ^-} $$ B - → π - μ + μ - decays. The analysis uses a sample of beauty mesons produced in proton–proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 $$\text {\,fb} ^{-1}$$ \,fb - 1 . The signal signature corresponds to simultaneous peaks in the $${\mu ^+\mu ^-} $$ μ + μ - and $${{\pi } ^-} {\mu ^+\mu ^-} $$ π - μ + μ - invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the decay at $$\mathcal{B}({{D} ^*} (2007)^0\!\rightarrow {\mu ^+\mu ^-} ) < 2.6\times 10^{-8}$$ B ( D ∗ ( 2007 ) 0 → μ + μ - ) < 2.6 × 10 - 8 at $$90\%$$ 90 % confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of $${{D} ^*} (2007)^0\!\rightarrow {\mu ^+\mu ^-} $$ D ∗ ( 2007 ) 0 → μ + μ - decays and the most stringent limit on $${{D} ^*} (2007)^0$$ D ∗ ( 2007 ) 0 decays to leptonic final states. The analysis is the first search for a rare charm-meson decay exploiting production via beauty decays.
We report on a measurement of the Lambda(+)(c) to D-0 production ratio in peripheral PbPb collisions at root sNN = 5.02TeV with the LHCb detector in the forward rapidity region 2 < y < 4.5. The Lambda(+)(c) (D-0) hadrons are reconstructed via the decay channel Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+) (D-0 -> K- pi(+)) for 2 < pT < 8 GeV/ c and in the centrality range of about 65-90%. The results show no significant dependence on pT, y or the mean number of participating nucleons. They are also consistent with similar measurements obtained by the LHCb collaboration in pPb and Pbp collisions at root sNN = 5.02TeV. The data agree well with predictions from PYTHIA in pp collisions at root s = 5TeV but are in tension with predictions of the Statistical Hadronization model.
